My apologies. On topic, Deathloop must be truly awful when it just released and people find it more interesting to talk about a trash tier first person hack and slash kicking game from 15 years ago.

Dark Messiah is a p great game. Bear in mind that it was basically a frankenstein's monster made out of scattered corpse of their failed Arx Fatalis sequel. They took the assets, I presume some areas are almost wholesale lifted (look how similar the Necromancer fortress is to the aesthetics of that cult from Arx), some of the systems, and used them for a more straightforward stage based action adventure. It's doubly great with that in mind.

Deathloop isn’t awful, just utterly mediocre.

Played a bit more of this one - have killed all the visionaries at least once and have explored the 4 maps fairly extensively (I'm guessing it's just the 4 maps + some story related extra areas to go, probably those doors that are locked with no electricity).

Overall it's a pretty good game. I like a game that takes me a little bit to work out what it's goal is and what they're trying to do as it at least shows they've tried to be creative.

The levels are great to explore, I was sceptical of there being only 4 maps but the areas the visionaries are in are meaty enough to feel like mini Dishonored levels on there own so I don't think it's lacking in that regard. Some really great exploration given you're finding leads that will open up other little areas in other maps.

A good example of this is needing to scan yourself at the "Club" one one map, which deactivates your abilities, you then need to go to another map in order to unlock a door, good exploration that added some challenge.

One feature I was surprised I've enjoyed, having the girl stalking you being a real player (if you play online) actually adds a lot. One problem with the game is it's very easy, if you have even a reasonable loadout it's quite easy to clear out the entire map of enemies without too much trouble. Having a real player potentially stalk you and eliminate all your progress if you stuff up really adds to the tension.

I thought this game was going to be some online co-op gimmick when it was announced so I'll give them some credit on that one, online elements can work if done right.

On the other hand, I'm still sceptical of Redfall which really does look like an online gimmick game. Having been enjoying Deathloop, I'll give it a fair chance but hopefully this one isn't there last good game.

It actually sounds much more promising on reading interviews &c than it does from the trailer.
The way they are marketing as a L4D like game might actually backfire on them, bc it can alienate the fans of their prior games while failing to attract the fans of such co-op shooters (and they might end up disliking the game anyway if they indeed get it and it turns out to be something other than the L4D clone it seemed to be).

Every single Arkane game under Zenimax has had its release marketing colossally mismanaged, so I don’t doubt that will be the case for Redfall too. And yeah, it doesn’t help that the game looks like shit.

There is no denying that. There was hardly much marketing around Deathloop to begin with, but it's poor luck of being a Sony exclusive published by a company now owned by Microsoft played into it. You wouldn't expect MS to care about investing much into marketing a PS5 exclusive.

Codex 2012 Strap Yourselves In Codex Year of the Donut Codex+ Now Streaming! Dead State Project: Eternity Codex USB, 2014 Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath
New AAA game with n!gger protagonist 1 month after realease: barely 1k players.
https://steamcharts.com/app/1252330

Low budget game made by 3 roachmen 15 years after release : almost 6k players
https://steamcharts.com/app/48700

Even Cyberbug that got roasted by everyone has 14k players almost a year after release :hahano::hahano::hahano:
https://steamcharts.com/app/1091500

Just so you understand how dead this game is.

Not really fair comparison, Mount & Blade is played due mods while Cyberpunk was a big hit and a open world game which always retains a player base for a longer period especially with mods.

Better comparison is Dishonored 1, 2 and Prey.

https://steamcharts.com/app/480490
https://steamcharts.com/app/403640
https://steamcharts.com/app/205100

All three games have almost as much players as Deathloop.

to make it a fair comparison, you'd have to watch for each one month after release; for all of them the decrease in number of players one month after release wasn't as high (especially for a game with a MP component).

(I'm not saying it's because it's an African American protag and on the cover, though, more like bad/inexistant marketing and buggy release)

You shot yourself in the foot by linking these games.
Dishonored 2 has more players atm than deathloop despite being a 5 years old game.

It's normal for this genre of game to drop quickly after release but it's obvious deadloop is flopping hard, and that's despite being Arkane's most fellated game in the media, it even received fucking 10/10 scores which even the worst game journos don't hand out often.

The 10/10 scores are just totally fucking bizarre. I think I’m pretty much the target market for this game, and I enjoyed (but didn’t finish) it more than most, but at my very most generous I would say it’s an 8/10; the more critical part of my brain thinks 6/10 is accurate for the overall package.

IGN Dorito Pope 10/10 GOTY!!!

That's how the business works. It's so corrupt that giving a game 6/10 translates to 2/10.

Deathloop also has a multiplayer aspect not present in dishonored/2, which tend to keep games alive much longer than singleplayer-only games.

I'm sure Arkane's next game will be a big hit though.
Redfall is an incoming disaster lmao

I mean, yes, most games journalists are obviously ethically compromised and totally okay with trading high scores for material rewards or social clout, but 10/10 scores are still rare. Something very weird happened here.

8/10 generous score + 1 point for black protagonist + 1 point for black antagonist =10/10. Say whatever you want but you know it's true.

That said, due to the Arkane 20th anniversay, the Dishonored series are on sale so the numbers are higher than usual, though the steamcharts pages suggest the numbers stay more or less the same. Bigger issue with Deathloop seems to be the price. People are getting spoiled by gamepass and the like, so "dishonored with invasions" might not sound very appealing for AAA+ price. I can see it becoming more popular once it enters Arkane's sale rotation.

Certainly something happened, my point was more that the scale isn't from 1 to 10, it's from 5 to 10.

Without shenanigans, the scale is something like:

Zero to four don't really exist, unless we want to make a point.

  • Is the game a complete failure? That's a 5.
  • Is the game below average in features and polish? That's a 6.
  • Is the game average and forgettable? That's a 7.
  • Is the game memorable, but flawed? That's an 8.
  • Is the game one of the best we've played this year? That's a 9.
  • Is this the best game we've tried for years? That's a 10.

Adding shenanigans, the scores easily inflate.

Some shenanigans that come to mind that aren't monetarily driven:

Does this game come from a studio we love? +1
Is the game politically correct for [current year]? +1
Will it make us look good giving it high marks? +1

it got 10s because they made it so easy that all the journalists who have always pretended to like these kinds of games could finally finish one and feel better about themselves and also because they put a bunch of niggers in the game and on the cover. mystery solved hand me my cocaine doctor watson
