Story in an Arkane game is like story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but its not that important.

How is the gameplay, level design, etc?

Level design is okay, gameplay is mediocre. The game as a complete package is definitely not terrible, but it’s definitely not great; a pretty forgettable experience all in all.

How is this game now technically?

Apparently on release it landed buggier than an island of death spiders, but the gameplay loop was really great.

I had technical issues with slowly degrading performance on an RTX 2080 but the beta patch they released almost immediately after release completely fixed the issue. It performs quite well apart from P2P netcode issues. The art is probably the strongest aspect of the game. The level design is also generally quite good if you like these kinds of games. Tons of alternate routes and methods of traversal.

Update 2 available now. They really seem to be focusing on the AI in the patches so far which was already comparable to the Dishonored games and Prey.
NPC Behavior
  • NPCs now react to bullets passing close by, such as headshots that miss
  • NPCs now react when another is assassinated close by
  • NPCs now hear better and react faster to nearby footfalls
  • NPCs under fire no longer move to take cover if the player is too close
  • NPCs can now deduce the direction from which a grenade was thrown
  • NPCs no longer stop trying to kill Colt if Julianna uses Nexus to link him to them
  • Interrupted aerial assassinations will no longer cause NPCs to become mostly invulnerable
  • Numerous other small fixes and improvements to NPC behavior, reactions, pathing, and placement
  • Charlie Montague no longer gets stuck in the floor or ground if he’s kicked while using Shift

One of the big retailers here in Aussieland just dropped it to half price for Black Friday. Obviously sales have been pretty woeful.

Sounds about as hilariously bad sales as Anthem. Anyone remember Anthem?

No. Same with this turd. Good thing they promoted the lead designer of Deathloop into a studio head!

That guy fails upward like nobody's business.

Could your shilling be any more blatant?
Works on my machine. Seems to be a problem mostly exclusive to the console version of the game. The overwhelming majority of videos on YouTube showcasing the braindead AI is showing controller-input and who the fuck plays an Arkane game on PC with a controller?

When I played on PC at launch the AI was laughably brain dead. It’s an okayish game (although definitely not an immersive sim), but the AI implementation was a serious misstep on Arkane’s part, probably the biggest one they made.

Please elaborate on this point. What is lacking from the game that makes you think this?

I'm not trying to argue or something, I'm just curious to hear your reasoning (I haven't played the game yet).

It has basically no elements commonly considered requisite for an immsim. There’s no inventory, very little environmental interaction, there’s not much variety in how a player can approach any given situation, the systemic design is no more complex than your average console FPS, and the AI is too lackluster to allow for any real emergent gameplay.

Really the only thing you can say it shares in common with immsims is that it has somewhat alinear level design (much less so than, say, Deus Ex though) and a slightly larger focus on exploration than your average FPS.

I'm wondering if they did it on purpose. Maybe a last moment failure of nerve on their part bc better AI combined with lack of quicksaves and difficulty options might have seen like too much for some players.

I am 100% certain the AI was a concession to journos and casuals; there are a number of design decisions that were clearly motivated by this.

The thing is, the game itself isn't bad (it's not great either); they just had no idea how to market/sell it. I think if Deathloop had billed itself as an "FPS Roguelite" and launched at $25 it might have been a massive hit.
I'm sure I'd enjoy the game when I play it, but not as much as I enjoyed the other Arkane games I've played.

Yes. It’s easily Arkane’s worst game, and I say that as someone who overall disliked Dark Messiah.
