Carefully crafted levels will almost always be better than open world with vast expenses of nothing. The only thing we could say the game gained by going open world is mounted combat, and we will see how good it is. Souls game already had exploration with many hidden secrets, interesting alternative routes and shortcuts and tightly designed world (for the most part at least) that made it more immersive than most open world game. Besides padding the game with pointless walking and needing to introduce modern garbage game design like shitty lights that you have to follow to know where to go, I fail to see how open world improves the formula in any significant way. Only consolation is that there are still "dungeons" that I will guess will be similar to old entries levels, but otherwise gone would be the interesting enemy placement that made even simple enemies become problematic because of features of the terrain (height advantage, traps, small corridors, etc). Even with simplistic enemies and AI you could still make interesting encounter due to intelligent use of the level design.

ER may be good, perhaps FS will actually manage to make an interesting open world that avoid falling on the same pitfalls that other games, but you cannot throw an open world to any game and say it will be an improvement. Such notion aligns with the sensibilities of the mainstream audiences that had swallow so much Ubisoft garbage and ask for more. Pure and utter decline. Open World can be done well, but saying that Dark Souls will be automatically better for having an open world is just a display of how much one's fail to understand what made those games work so well, how fundamental it was both mechanically and thematically, as well as how it had effects on the storytelling and immersion.

Didn't play the beta trying to stay away from too many spoilers. But it looks like the map that was revealed is just one wide corridor. I saw nothing from that map to indicate that it was truly open world. Just moving from one large area to another in a line. The areas might just be as wide or a bit wider than say the swamp levels through Souls games or say the open areas in the Ring City DLC in DS3.

I strongly agree if we are talking about "vast expenses of nothingness". However, there are some great games with open world design. Gothic 1/2 is an example. The world is not THAT big but has a lot of verticality and cool places to explore. Seems that Elden Ring map(at least the network test) has a lot of cool stuff to do and a bit of verticality.

The problem is that most modern games with open world design has a lot of areas with nothing interesting and other areas of the same dungeon reskined with minor differences in layout. Many games focus on quantity over quality, but a open world game don't need to do it. And a more "linear" game can have a lot of repetitive levels. Open world or not, I rather have 10 well crafted dungeons than hundreds of dungeons that are merely reskins aka skyrim nordic tombs or Oblivion portals in Oblivion. Gothic 1 has just one dungeon(sleeper temple) and is open world. Two if you count the old mine as a "dungeon".

From Software is amazing in worldbuilding. I believe that they can deliver a cool open world game, with a lot of verticality, and environmental story telling.
