I think it's just that Americans were more sheltered from the cultural poison that swept through Europe destroying modesty. Historically people had houses with more than one room in our part of the globe for many generations. And not all social groups lived like that even earlier. In addition it wasn't like "historically" they lined up children specifically for them watch a porno-show made by parents. Even a blanket gives some intimacy.
