Civilization II is the best strategy and might be the best game of all time

How does one run civ2 on a modern machine?

I was able to run it on my laptop without any major adjustments. I was pretty shocked. Windows 10.

I think I just downloaded it at the link below and, as it says, you just run the .exe file and it should work

https://gamesnostalgia.com/game/sid-meiers-civilization-ii
I also recommend using this small mod which adds all sorts of UI QOL features, my favorite being the ability to use the scroll wheel in the production queue. I couldn't live without it.

https://github.com/FoxAhead/Civ2-UI-Additions/releases

It also allows for custom end dates.

I got a copy of regular but I need the gold multiplayer to use the modded scenarios I believe. Also the game ran no problem on windows 10.

Some scenarios require Fantastic Worlds version, but with MGE version you'll be able to run all scenarios. And like Blake posted, there are years of content in all the scenarios out there.

Think it was a year ago that I originally posted in this thread and over in my main project update thread here about my Civilization series scenario/mod search & rescue project which is mostly looking at finding total conversion scenarios for Civ2 and other classic Civ games that have been lost over the decades but also cataloging cool ones for more recent Civ games too. There's waaaay too much out there for one person to ever cover so I've focused/limited the search to Civ mods relating to some of my favourite scifi and fantasy movies/tv shows/games. Over the last year I've posted many huge list updates due to all the great help I've received from old Civ fans out there across the various forums and social media groups. I've even been successfully peer pressured into adding a whole bunch of extra scifi & fantasy categories not originally in the list such as Final Fantasy, Warhammer, Warcraft, Fallout/Terminator/Mad Max like Apocalypse stuff, Elder Scrolls & Game of Thrones and I've found many cool Civ scenarios relating to them. Naturally all of the old categories from a year ago are still there like Mars Colonization, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Dune, Master of Magic, Sid Meier's Colonization, Master of Orion, Doom, Babylon 5, Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, Lord of the Rings, and Heroes of Might & Magic too. The list is massive compared to a year ago and is around the 300 mark now! To see the full list of search categories and all the scenarios found and their download links check out my CivFanatics project thread below:

https://forums.civfanatics.com/thre...o-doom-b5-strek-swars-sgate-homm-more.657278/

In many cases these scenarios were missing so I searched and worked with collectors to find and rescue them preserving them across multiple sites like CivFanatics, ModDB and Internet Archive. I'm currently finishing up my Civ2 part of this work which includes several hundred targeted scenarios as well as backup 'super collections' containing thousands of lost scenarios.

https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/civ2-mge-tot-scenario-mod-preservation-project.671035/

As a bonus side project I also looked at cataloging web archive backups of long lost Civ2 websites. I'm sure many people here remember those good old days of browsing late 90s Geocities sites hunting for the next cool Civ2 scenario to try out. Most are long gone however many probably don't realise they have working backups on web archive. In the end I found several hundred websites and cataloged them.

https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/civ-fanatics-civ2-information-thread.355722/#post-16071407

And lastly if you're a big Civ2 fan and you think you might still have your old scenario collection on some old hard drive somewhere please contact me as I'd be very interested in your collection. There's a number of super lost scenarios (including some cool looking Final Fantasy, Starcraft and Dune ones) I've exhausted all options on finding so I'm now totally dependent on generous collectors coming forward. I talk about these 'super lost' scenarios here:

https://forums.civfanatics.com/thre...d-scenarios-on-dustin-dunns-civ2-site.669203/

Earlier in this thread I posted lots of pictures of cool scenarios found during this preservation work.. so here's a few more old ones I've recently found and preserved! :)

Thank you sir! :) Also that gif is awesome haha.

Oh and I should say to anyone who's been following my Civ2 mod project updates in this thread and wondering why it's been ages since the last update, well obviously all this preservation work of other peoples Civ2 scenarios & mods across multiple sites took out most of my 2021 so I didn't do much work on my own stuff unfortunately as rescuing 20 years of other peoples lost scenarios seemed more important!

Oh and because it was recently the 30th anniversary celebration of Sid Meier's Civilization 1 I also took some time away from Civ2 to release my Civilization 1 mods to the world along with some videos that show people how they can play Civ1 in HD with mods & scenarios on modern machines using a VM. These Civ1 videos kick off a huge video series I've been working on for years that will show fans how they can play all the classic Civ1-2-3etc/Col/MoM/CtP/AlphaC games in HD with some of the best mods and scenarios out there.

I didn't create dev diaries for these mods as they're pretty simple compared to my big Civ2 ones I've been posting about in this thread but I have done some info & release articles on ModDB. I very much look forward to the day this year I do my final release posts for all the Civ2 stuff in this thread haha.

Civilization 1 For Windows - Soundtrack Overhaul Mod Release!
https://www.moddb.com/mods/civwin-complete-soundtrack-overhaul-mod/news/civilization-1-for-windows-complete-soundtrack-overhaul-mod-release

Civilization 1 – Play As Barbarians Scenario release!
https://www.moddb.com/mods/attilas-conquest-1-play-as-barbarians-scenario/news/civ1-play-as-barbarians-scenario-release

The up and coming Civ2 version of this video is going to be even bigger as I've found so much darn good stuff out there for Civ2. So much so that I'll be doing separate MGE and ToT videos.

Been a while since my last update on the super lost Civ2 scenarios. Had some nice victories since my last post!

CivFanatics owner Thunderfall kindly gave me access to a legacy files area that contained Jeelen's missing Star Trek scenarios allowing me to rescue them as part of my scenario preservation project. These are super cool finds as some are enhanced/modified versions of Kobayashi's famous and very popular Battle for the Alpha Quadrant and Dominion War scenarios while others are 'new' ideas heavily influenced by Star Trek Birth of the Federation which is one of my favourite all time games! There were some visual glitches in them all likely due to Jeelen making these so long ago when we were all rocking CRT screens that didn't show different shades of black very well resulting in some terrain cells having almost dark grey space instead of black space so I corrected them to match the rest of the space terrain since it was an easy fix.

Then while finishing up going through the MetroPolis collection donation to the preservation project I was surprised to find another super lost scenario from the list.. Star Wars The Dagobah System! In the end it's pretty basic and nothing special but nevertheless it nice to knock off another one from this list as I really didn't expect to find any more.

Star Trek: First Contact Scenario v2.1 by J.L. Nijholt (MGE)
This one is an enhanced version of Kobayashi's famous Battle for the Alpha Quadrant scenario.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Star Trek: The Next Generation Scenario by J.L. Nijholt (MGE)
This one is a super cool scenario inspired by Star Trek Birth of the Federation. Like in the original game exploration, diplomacy, and dealing with minor races is key!
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Star Trek: Voyager Scenario by J.L. Nijholt (MGE)
This one appears similar in appearance to the above BOTF inspired one however it is more story driven with scripted events relating to Voyager encountering the Borg and the Dominion invasion of the Alpha quadrant.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Star Trek: Warp 9 Dominion War Scenario v1.3 by J.L. Nijholt (MGE)
This one is an enhanced version of Kobayashi's famous Dominion War scenario.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Star Wars The Dagobah System Scenario by Filip Carlsson (CiC)
A simple classic Star Wars scenario set in the Dagobah system (where Luke found Yoda).
CivFanatics Downloads Area

However it looks like the best news is yet to come as in the last few days something awesome has occurred.. I've been contacted by someone who has a copy of seemly all the lost scenarios on Dustin Dunn's huge Civ2 website (that as discussed earlier in this thread specialized in rare content not on Apolyton or CivFanatics) as well as this donors personal huge collection of other old scenarios. I've successfully got the files from him and collection is massive.. possibly even bigger than the Apolyton and CFC Atomic ones.. literally hundreds and hundreds of scenarios and mods. But of course the jewel in this collection is Dustin's stuff that I have tried for countless hours over the last couple of years to find out there and had no luck. If you were to look at my super lost scenario list posted earlier in this thread and ask me which ones in that list I wanted to find more than anything else I'd tell you the 2 Final Fantasy ones, the Starcraft one, the 3 Dune ones, and the Dawn of the Dead one. Well sure enough I've checked the files and they're ALL here!! my most wanted are all here!!! and maybe I'll even find some of the other from that super lost list in here too. I can't believe it.. I didn't think this would happen.. I've have some great luck and a lot of help over the last couple of years but I didn't think I'd ever score the grand jewel which is Dustin's collection. :)

So if all goes well least half the scenarios in the lost and most wanted list are about to get crossed out! :) For now I'll just make them grey until I've tested them properly.

Civ2-UI-Additions Version 1.16 (Build 68) released
https://github.com/FoxAhead/Civ2-UI-Additions/releases

New features said:
  1. Sort supported units list.

Sorting order is: role 5 (Settlers, Engineers) is first, then attacking units ordered by domain (ground, air sea), descending by defense, descending by attack and then the rest by ID.

  2. Reset Engineer's order after passing its work to coworker. If there is already a worker in the tile, then when adding a new one, he takes the work counter for himself, and the order of the previous one is additionally reset. Thus, there should be only one worker with an order in a cell. This simplifies rush terraforming, as it eliminates the need to wake up the unit each time. Refer to point 3 for more information.

  3. Don't break unit movement on ZOC (zone of control). If unit has 'Go To' order, it doesn't stop when entering ZOC. Of course, the ZOC rule still applies. Originally, this behavior was applied only for role 7 units (Caravan, Freight). Be careful with this option, the unit will only stop when it breaks the ZOC rule or runs out of movement points. That is, for example, a unit directed at an enemy city will continuously try to enter it, attacking the defenders. Or attack an enemy unit suddenly emerging from the fog of war.

  4. Reset units Wait flag after activating. Originally, units ordered with 'Wait' command receives special Wait flag; when switching to the next unit, it is searched for as the closest one without a Wait flag; if nothing is found, then all these flags are cleared and searched again. With this option, all Wait flags are immediately cleared when a unit is manually activated, which should build a more convenient sequence for switching to nearby units.

  5. Reset MoveIteration before start moving to prevent wrong warning. This fixes the incorrect 'Long Unit Move' warning that was caused by a non-resetting movement counter.

  6. Set focus to City window when opened from Advisor and back to Advisor when closed. Originally, the focus stayed on the Advisor window, so none of the City hotkeys worked, and pressing Esc closed the Advisor instead of the City window.

  7. Celebrating city in yellow color instead of white in Attitude Advisor (F4). So it's more noticeable now.

  8. Indicating attitude in the city window. Texts below citizen sprites are colored as in Attitude Advisor. This helps to immediately see the effect of the used specialists.

  9. Radio buttons hotkeys. Can speed up the selection of options using the keyboard.

  10. City quickinfo tooltips. Hover mouse over the city and hold Ctrl key.

  11. Made most advisors and lists vertically resizable.

  12. Advisors caption area increased to make it easier to move windows around.

  13. Better scrolling in Units List Popup: no flickering, adjusting scrollbar PageSize, keys navigation.

  14. Added Cancel button to city Change Production dialog - Esc is now Cancel.

  15. Added shields cost in the city Change Production list.

  16. Sorting in City Status advisor. Cities can be sorted by size, name, food, production or trade. Added total cities number.

  17. Mass change specialists in City window. Hover mouse over specialist, hold Shift key and scroll mouse wheel - this changes all specialists at once. Shift-clicking on specialist change others to the same one.

  18. Suppress simple GAME.TXT popups. The list of popup names could be set in the UIA Settings (Menu - UI Additions - Settings... - List...). These popups will be shown in the map overlay instead, eliminating the annoying need to click 'OK' button.

  19. Include fix for mk.dll (229.gif, 250.gif) and pv.dll (105.gif). As here:
    https://forums.civfanatics.com/resources/corrected-dlls-for-mge.24259/
restoring original Louis XIV and Joan of Arc leader portraits that were accidentally overwritten with Alexander and Hippolyta, and the furthest Throne Room wall that was overwritten with the second level.
This fix is applied automatically based on GIF size comparisons. If mk.dll and pv.dll are modded, the fix will not be applied.

  20. Color correction. If the game seems too dull or too bright for you, then this can be corrected without editing the GIF palettes. This and some other options can be set in Menu - UI Additions - Settings....

I've finished processing the DSquared collection and have uploaded all the scenarios that I took interest in as well as the entire collection itself for others to enjoy! People can find it over in my Civ2 scenario preservation project thread at CivFanatics.

So now comes that awesome moment I never thought would happen where I get to cross off a large amount of the scenarios in this long lost scenario wishlist thread and talk about each one I found! :)

Final Fantasy 4 (2 US) Scenario Modpack v2.0 by Frank Johnson (FW)
Yes it's the big one, the whole reason I started this thread! Sure enough it's an awesome total conversion scenario modpack based on Final Fantasy 4 with gorgeous authentic graphics ripped from the original game with very few disappointments. And those few disappointments such as missing factions and capital city names I've corrected myself! I very much look forward to playing this and doing a nice video of it in the future.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Final Fantasy 6 (3 US) Scenario Modpack ALPHA by Dustin Dunn (MGE) - Unfinished
This one was NOT in the missing list but I just have to post it anyway as Dustin who helped out on the FF4 mod above went on to do an even more ambitious FF6 scenario. Sadly he never finished it and it's not really playable but it's super cool work, especially if you're a retro Final Fantasy fan like me!
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Final Fantasy 1 Scenario by Jomb (FW)
Yes its another big one from early in this thread. I wanted this one so bad as well, and sure enough it did not disappoint with its really cool total conversion authentic FF1 NES graphics. Jomb had awesome attention to detail and clearly shared my love of a cool game crossover total conversion mods that make Civ2 feel like another game.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Crystalis Scenario by Jomb (FW)
Once again this one was NOT in the missing list because I didn't know about it until I got my hands on Dustin's collection but I gotta mention it as it turns out Jomb did another classic NES era JRPG game and it looks super cool too.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Below is another big one from early in this thread! Admittedly I'd hoped that the missing 3 Dune scenarios would be better than the existing 2 we already had but they fall short a bit. They still have some nice features and clever ideas that make them unique, and I'm super glad to finally have them all as I never thought I'd find them and they plus the other 2 will make a great video down the track...

Dune - Pour l'epice! (For the spice!) Scenario by N. Chautru (FW) - French
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Dune The Battle for Arrakis Scenario v1.0 by Isaac Ashdown (CiC)
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Sands of Dune Scenario by James Dahl (FW)
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Starcraft: Terran War Scenario v1.1 by aland007 (MGE)
Yes it's the other big one from the very first post in this thread. I finally have the Starcraft scenario!! :) It's pretty cool and has a number of interesting features but I was a bit disappointed in its lack of custom terrain graphics so I made a separate addon pack (2nd pic).
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Dawn of the Dead Scenario v2.0 by Blackclove (FW)
We've finally got @Blackclove 's missing scenario that even he didn't have anymore! Sure enough it's pretty cool and looks like quite a challenge to survive the overwhelming odds against the zombie apocalypse!
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Orion Alpha Centauri Scenario v2.0 by ?unknown? (CiC)
I didn't originally understand why an Alpha C scenario was called Orion but after finally getting my hands on this one I discovered why. Basically the races from Master of Orion are all landing on Alpha Centauri. So basically it's 2 games being merged into one haha. Sadly it lacked custom terrain files so I couldn't resist giving it some to spice it up a bit. They can be easily removed though for those that want the original experience.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Star Wars Tatouine Scenario by J. Belanger (CiC) - French
The final missing Tatooine scenario has been found. It actually stacks up pretty well against all the other ones too.
CivFanatics Downloads Area

Sadly despite being on Dustin's website J. Belanger's other Star Wars scenario based on the battle of Hoth sadly wasn't to be found in the DSquared collection so that remains in the missing list. So here we go.. maybe for the last time as I don't expect any more miracles haha.. here's the updated missing scenario list & help info below! :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Latest version of missing scenario list & info:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If people want to help but don't want to fluff about searching through your old collections looking for these scenarios then they are also very VERY welcome to donate their entire scenario collections to me to search for these lost scenarios in and also sort out and add to my main preservation project. I have setup some publicly accessible cloud storage with several gigabytes free that anyone can just drag and drop files into (literally it's that easy) so if you have an old CD or hard drive somewhere filled with scenarios from long gone websites and would like to donate please let me know and I'll PM you the link to my cloud. You will be publicly praised and credited for helping me or should you wish to remain anonymous that's no problem either. :)

One of the big Civ2 super sites still missing from the preservation collection is Whistler's (Kunal Shah) SidGames and it's hosted satellite sites like Civ2 Ziggurat, Jorrit's Civ2 Site, Markus's Ultimate/Planet Civ2, and Civ2 Scifilization which all had their own scenario collections with quite a few rarities that never made it to Poly or CFC. From what I can tell none of them survived Sidgames's rather sudden disappearance and webarchive didn't backup any of the downloads. Now that we've got Apolyton (& it's satellites), CivFanatics Atomic, and Dustin Dunns DSquared Zandanian League site it means SidGames (& it's satellites) really is the last super site missing from the Civ2 preservation project. So if anyone out there has content from those SidGames sites or a way to contact Whistler I'm all ears!!

Nope, It was topped both tactically and strategically by so, so many games, as far as city builders go, a genre i've come to loathe, it's pretty good and with interesting mechanism.
Most of all, Civilization was ahead of its time and in a good way.

Still, the master of strategy and tactics is UFO and there is no contest.

It most certainly is the Civ game I have fondest memories of.

I liked the addition of heroes from I'm not sure which civ game (civ 3 expansion? Competing franchise?) but Civilization II + Fantastic Worlds expansion is the one I have the fondest memories of.
This and the ton of quality user content that came with it.
Really a masterpiece.

This guy won in the end. Who cares about brains if the people are happy? Although I grant that people don't seem too happy...

Science & taxes be damned, your nobleness! The people need luxuries to smoothe their aching hearts!

Love the cheesy old high council haha. Was sad when later Civ games went back to text advisors. I've been watching these guys quite a bit lately as I'm working on replacing them for my Civ2 Heroes of Might & Magic mod with little simple animating HoMM2 Heroes portraits (yes I'm finally back working on that project again after neglecting it for nearly 2 years due to all this Civ2 scenario preservation work). If I can get it all working I'll post a video...

Civ2-UI-Additions Version 1.20 (Build 707) released
https://github.com/FoxAhead/Civ2-UI-Additions/releases
This time something special.
44. Finally fixed AI attitude calculation. Due to the uninitialized variable, every turn the attitude of the AI changed to the minimum, which made the AI very aggressive towards the player. This bug turned out to be so obvious that it was decided to completely remove the option to enable the fix. This bug is fixed by default without any options.
Unlike the previous version of the patch, which originated somewhere in the deep history of this forum, and which completely cut off the change in the attitude, now the calculation of the attitude should be performed as it was intended by the algorithm.

Well after so long since the last project update I guess it's time to post some new ones! Yes after years on the preservation stuff previous posted here I'm finally back working on my own Civ2 mod projects again. :)

RA2 Dev Diary 06 – Units & Other Final Graphics for the Civilization 2 – Red Alert 2 Scenario
In this sixth dev diary for the Civ2 Red Alert 2 scenario we’re in the home stretch as the title loading screen plus all units, technologies, & base improvements are completed.
https://www.moddb.com/mods/civiliza...-scenario/news/units-and-other-final-graphics

.

.

HoMM2 Dev Diary 07 - New Diplomacy, Dragon Launch & Animating High Council For The Civ2 Heroes Of Might & Magic 2 Mod:
In this seventh dev diary for the Civ2 HoMM2 mod we take on the 3 final frontiers of Civ2 editing and change the diplomacy screen background, spaceship construction sequence, and grand council video advisors with cool HoMM2 content. In the case of the council I had to create animating versions of HoMM2 hero portraits!

I noticed Civ III was on sale for 99 cent on Steam so decided to buy it. I don't think I ever played III. I honestly don't like it any better than II for the most part, BUT it's a lot harder. Anyway, I'm playing and the Arabs are real fuckers. Like the biggest assholes ever. They keep demanding shit and if I don't give in they'll declare war on me. So I paid them off to get peace and spent like...50 turns just amassing a HUGE force of troops and I fucking demolished them. Right as I was about to take the last city (their capital) I contacted them just to make them beg. They offered tons of money to make me stop and I turned it down and then wiped their whole civilization off the face of the civ Earth. That shit felt good.

Then I took down the Zulu because I had become the Arabs by amassing a huge army lol (in my defense, the Zulu were also assholes).

Gold Edition is quite possibly my most played game ever. I think Civ2 on its own is good, but all the scenarios really set it on high. Massive World War campaigns, alien invasions, B.C.-era dinosaur stuff. And most of them came with really kickass soundtracks. That type of scenario design seems to have completely departed the series which is a shame.

To add to this, I get almost gutwrenchingly intense nostalgia whenever I hear the OST, especially because so many songs were attached to specific scenarios. Speaking of which, the dino scenario had a track with a pretty sick build-up and drop given the era it came out in:

Back then, we had juryrigged a huge speaker/subwoofer behind our truck's front seat. Putting this jam on, you could just about feel your bloodcells vibrating when that drop hit.

Heh good timing that this thread got bumped as I just got given a new donation of lost Civ2 scenarios to go through and can already see the Star Trek 7 of 9 one I've been trying to find for years is in there. Will get it processed and uploaded to my Civ2 scenario preservation project thread at CivFanatics in the near future.

Also in other news we hit the 1 year anniversary mark on the campaign to get Civ1, Civ2 & ToT back into stores project that I've mentioned here previously. All the GoG vote threads have gone up by several thousand votes (thank you everyone!!! :) ) which is good but as expected there's been no major breakthroughs yet. Apparently Firaxis are aware of the issue but the decision is in 2K's hands so it's up to us Civ fans to get 2K's attention and show that they can make money off them. GoG voting is probably the easiest way as it pushes them to contact rights holders so if you haven’t already voted please check out the link below!

Disclaimer: Yes there's probably little chance of this working, yes many of us still have our CDs, yes many warez sites offer free copies of them, yes there are similar alternatives like FreeCiv & C-Evo, and yes maybe you like one of the sequels more. However none of that means Civ1 & Civ2 should not be brought back from exile and sold in modern digital stores like Civ3-6 are, like plenty of other formerly lost Microprose games are, and like many other games from that mid 90s era are that were FAR less successful. This is about getting these great old games back out into the world, getting them out of exile and the lost backwaters of the internet, injecting a bit of fresh life back into their fan communities (which is prob my biggest motivation), and also making them easier to get working. A lot of people struggle to get Civ2 in particular working on modern machines (with the CD based vids & music) so pre-packaged versions on GoG & Steam with 64bit fan patches applied and CD content included all in easy to use installers would help a lot. More info on the situation and the various technical issues & existing workarounds can be found in the thread's expandable 'full pitch' section.

Playing this now and it's so well done

I noticed Civ III was on sale for 99 cent on Steam so decided to buy it. I don't think I ever played III.
I remember playing Civ III after countless hours of Alpha Centauri. It's like deciding to stop eating at the best restaurant in town in favour of the worst pajeet street food vendor.

Yeah my only recollection of Civ3 was this being one of the first times as a kid that I learned to be disappointed by a sequel. Right around the same time as the first season of Star Trek: Voyager.

Then Civ IV came out and sucked just as much for years until Beyond the Sword made it great.

I don't remember playing Alpha Centauri so my only comparison as far as early games go is Civ II. Honestly Civ II is better. Civ III is just an inferior game with more window dressing although I somewhat like the graphics less and I definitely dislike the mechanics and overall game play. Everything feels clunkier including the unit movement but especially the negotiations with other leaders. That mechanic awful. The advisor mechanic is boring and less enjoyable without the actor videos (a weird choice). On the III temple building vs. II Throne room II definitely wins. I find it weird the game doesn't have a cheat mode, which is fun to play with on occasion.

Now, that said, I do like somethings better. I love, for example, they spun off settler functions into a new worker unit and you can just automate them

Does civ 2 have a map mode to show resources for each tile?
