Doom 2 is a worse sequel than Half-Life 2!

No it's not lmao.

The fuck with this hate for Doom 2 it's basically the same fucking shit as Doom 1 give or take. It's like saying that Thief 1 is totally shit and unplayable compared to Thief 2.

The problem with this whole conversation is that nobody realizes that everything is cyclical, and that when a certain "possibility" as been fullfilled, there is no possibility to backtrack and add to what is essentially already been the final "word" in a particular artistic trend.

The achievements of Doom cannot be repeated because the enviorment of which Doom rapresents a kind of pinnacle cannot be recreated. Things can only move on and new masterpieces will appear that belong to new stylistic trends that cannot be easily compared to what came before.

Pick any famous FPS after Doom and the first question that comes to mind when talking about how much "better" they are is: better at doing what, exactly?

And every masterpiece is such a lighting the bottle, impossible to repeat even by the very people that created it, that one might think creativity doesn't belong to anyone in particular but is part of a particular "world" and certain people just happen to be there at the right time to harness that enegy to bring about an inevitable development that will forever be unique and impossible to repeat.

Dunno why the series never returned to its Lovecraftian roots.

That's because Romero left after development of Quake 1 and there was little creative vision left.

Quake II was a generic space shooter, as was Quake 4.

Actually Quake 4 was better than Doom 3 IMO.

Quake 2 was better than Doom 3 and Quake 4 all though those last two don't rapresent any particular high bar.

Doom 2 hate is retarded and most of it comes down to "muh map design" which is a bullshit argument considering Doom 1 has weak maps all the same. The mental gymnastics a nigga has to go through to play Limbo and say, "oh yeah man, totally, this is so much better than Living End" is Olympic-level.

That's true of creators but that's also true of the audience as well.

Look how many people keep chasing after a teenage high, blaming new games for failing to recreate a "magic" that was only possible because they were at the sweet spot between seamless proficience and youthful enthusiasm.

New games can't reproduce the fireworks that happened in your 15yo brain even if you had some kind of magic to perfectly pinpoint what "better than Doom" actually means to you.
Cope. Old games are objectively better. The only thing that declined in the audience is their ability to appreciate that, even when they were actually there themselves. The people who could only rely on youthful enthusiasm to enjoy something didn't have any taste to begin with.

Where does Quake 2 stand with Doom?
It's not anywhere close to how good Doom is, but it's reasonably enjoyable in its own right. It has all the basic weapons from the earlier games by Id Software, but they're tweaked in ways that make several of them somewhat underwhelming; on the other hand, there are new weapons like the Hyperblaster which is fairly enjoyable and the Railgun, which is one of the most satisfying weapons ever. The level design goes more in a realistic direction in terms of how corridors and structures are arranged, so it's not as imaginative and abstract in unexpected ways like in the earlier Id games, but the locations themselves are pretty interesting and have that cool ‘dark sci-fi’ theme. The enemies are nicely animated and have many interesting attack patterns, but the problem with them is that they're all rather slow and don't deal that much damage, so in the end it feels like the game lacks an edge as a shooter, especially when compared to Doom and Quake.

Quake 2 sucks - it's got the worst feeling guns in a game.

When it comes to an FPS I need that rad gun feel - Quake 2 doesn't have it. Also the enemies are lame.

Full disclosure I've only made it 3 levels in Quake 2 before stopping and going back to playing Quake for the millionth time.

RTX Quake 2 is pretty cool though. I don't know anything about the tech involved in the engine of Quake. V. Quake 2 but I'd kill to get a RTX mod of Q1.

Why do zoomers hate Doom so much and prefer garbage like Half Life, CS, COD, Halo, Goldeneye, Nu Doom, Nu wolfenstein, Overwatch, Serious Sam, FEAR?

Ego rape. Doom reminds young people that they and the things of their generation don't stack up. Same thing happens every-time you bust the 'myth of progress' people hold in their hearts and minds. That's not to say no things ever progress through time, but these kinds of people believe everything progresses all the time.
