Most games lose their appeal eventually and most games age poorly too. Not many I still would want to play after years/decades. The saddest for me is Age of Wonders, I used to play that over and over for many years. It never got boring for me because I used to like the comfy repetition and I got to try new stuff sometimes. It all had a sense of wonder -.- about it which was mostly because the maps seemed huge and I was such a noob that it took me forever to go through them. So I'd play that map for days until it was done and loved it. But when I play now it all feels so small and such a waste of time. There's not that much to do and not much in the game, most of what you are doing is chores of clicking ok on 20 things each turn. If you speeded it all up and cut out all the crap it would be 2 minutes. It just totally lost all interest to me suddenly. The battles are the best bit and for that I may as well play KOTC or something which is better and more focused on it. I also feel like my love for it in the past stopped me from questioning all the stuff that sucks about it. Now I see so much wrong with I rather just play something else.
That game has a lot of potential and good underlying mechanics, I guess I would have got bored of it but we've been able to mod it in new ways in the past couple of years. If you are a PBEM or live game type you could join the discord and play heavily modded multiplayer.
In one map I made it so that you can summon as many spellcasters as you want, only limiting factor is gold upkeep for the spellcasters. But each player can easily have a few dozen each spamming elementals, storms, enchantments, all of which are cheaper and more powerful than in base game. Next thing I need to get around to modding is making Firestorm melt sand into Lava, but only on hexes not currently occupied by an army. It's that kind of thing being done now, plus there are some fast-paced multiplayer maps made lately, depends if you like multi I guess. That one with the summonable mages is huge though, took me months to make it.

Morrowind. Especially now that I have played Gothic, the static NPCs and wildlife in MW makes the idea of replaying it not very appealing.

anyway does anyone have any tips to have any kind of fun back of games you already enjoyed and completed?

Mod them.
Play them with self imposed rules to increase difficulty, like playing it Ironman or no use of rest spamming.

Hmmm...for me AoW is one those games that I actually enjoy more now than when I last played it heavily 15 years ago. And I don't even play MP. But there's lots of user-made maps of high quality.

Going back to replay these, they feel like some amateur theater production on a stage, not a magical world.
You get descriptions like "Tomb of Ajunta Pall" was an expansive winding Sith labyrinth.

Enter into the area and it`s basically one long quick hallway.

Or on Feros when you get told about elaborate underground tunnels.
Side quests all about how they can`t find things down there, etc
Walk down two straight non-descript corridors (The only way you can go), and every side-quest on Feros pops up in front of you whack-a-mole style.

Not a tech problem, as the 2d Bioware games / Morrowind etc feel open and expensive, living worlds.
Never played any Dragon Age, actually curisous if this was improved with Origins.

When I was 13 years old I played Diablo and was like "Yeah, edginess, demons, a Scottish blacksmith, this all so original and cool!" while nowadays I just think all Diablo style games suck because they are shit games that treat players like mice on a wheel.
Actually Diablo 1 is not a game that threats players like that. It's just a very simplified dungeon-crawler / roguelike-ish game. What you have in mind are Diablo 2 and everything that came after it that copied its formula.


For me it would be IE games. I only liked two of those (BG2, ID1) but when I tried to replay them it seemed so boring. The fact that i have even less patience for RTwP nonsense than i used to doesn't help.

My first "RPG" was Diablo 2 so I used to play a lot of diabloids and arpgs back in a day. Not anymore. After 10 minutes of action im already bored out of my mind. So, Sacreds, Dungeon Sieges, even Gothic and Risen are extremely boring to me nowadays. On the contrary, old, pondering tbRPGs and TBSs are growing on me with time.

Practically all RPGs have lost their magic on me. Played too much, seen too much, every iteration of game mechanics have already been experienced. The RPG must be truly exceptional for me to want to play it from start to finish. Usually the boredom kicks in mid-game and then it's all about pushing yourself to finish the damn thing because you paid for it. This is just the standard curse of approaching boomer-hood.

Loved it as a kid, had it as a firm fave, didn't touch it for 20 odd years but kept hearing (and agreeing) with how amazing it was, returned to it several times the past 5 years to try and enjoy it again and fucking hated each attempt.

Replaying really made me realize how essentially I just fell in love with an easily accessible game with great music and a cool frog story. Replaying it now and it's just way too easy, way too predictable because of the set battles, and an RPG for kids getting into them.

Whilst in contrast to that I still replay many console RPGs from that era and still love them to bits, such as Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star 4, Lufia 2, and Langrisser 2.

To be fair, I've already got more than my money's worth from it (well over 1000 hours played) but I've only finished it once. Every other time I've dropped it somewhere between the end of chapter 2 and the beginning of chapter 5. I just find I get less and less enjoyment out of the game the further I go.

I also did numerous runs in the endless dungeon, but can't stand playing more of that and don't imagine I will in the future, either.

Planescape is an RPG that sort of lost its magic for me - not exactly though, the problem is that it's so memorable I still feel like it's too early to replay. Ironic given its plot, the problem is I remember it too well. Doesn't help that I rewatched some great parts on youtube. I really want to replay it and it's been like 8 years, still too early.

Baldur's Gate games probably can't be replayed either, gameplay feels too basic after playing more complex strategy and rpg games. And if combat isn't compelling then nor is doing all the looting and exploring to make party more powerful. Guess i could replay those games after mega cancer bloatmaxxed modding to make it really hard.

Probably NWN2. I played it when it came out and then replayed it with the expansions. After that I just got sick of it for some reason. Even taking a break for several years did not help. Whenever I think of this game, my brain says, "No!". I think I feel the same way about DA:O.

A lot of it probably has to do with what was said above about virtually all RPGs:

Played too much, seen too much, every iteration of game mechanics have already been experienced.

That's why still I appreciate games like the original Fallouts, where dialog is short and mostly optional, inventory is simplified, and stats are not that important since you can't really mess up a build. That said, I had to set the game speed to 200% in sfall the last time I played through Fallout 1 and 2. At the base speed, walking and combat are so slow that it's hard for me not to fall asleep.

Dragon Age series as well as TES series. And I don't mean newer ones were worse, I mean I enjoyed the DA series and Daggerfall, Morrowind + expansions, but nowadays I wouldn't be able to play them again without being terribly bored.

Not an RPG but HoMM3. Mostly connected to how exploitable and unbalanced the whole thing is, which is something you don't realise when you're younger. Maybe I should try one of those slav megamods.

Not an RPG, but WoW (MMORPG). I used to love playing this game. But the reason I don't like it anymore, in fact since a couple of years doesn't originate from me, rather from the development team, who took a game that was pretty damn good and:

1) Made the story and the lore sillier with each new expansion

2) Made insane grinding a prerequisite

3) Always tried to balance PvE (player vs environment) but never PvP seriously.

Hasn't been true for all the expansions of WoW, but there's definitely a downward trend.

I don't lose the magic, cause I recycle playing between games a lot. Not just like switching from one RPG to another, but just entirely new genre.
Granted, I tend to play about 6 different games per month, as I finish and move on to others, but it's the cycle that keeps it fresh, especially when not playing them on same exact order.

Although the access of internet has lost the magic in regards of things being unknown/mysterious to me. Everything has been labelled and databased, so there's not a real sense of discovery.

I used to play crpgs loads in the 2000s before GOG and Steam made it easy. Most of them I never finished because I could never get the hang of the mechanics and the unofficial patches were really messy to install. What I loved most were Neverwinter Nights modules. There were so many I don’t even remember anymore. I tried to get into editors but I was never able to make it work. As I grew older I lost interest and I never tried any of the games made since the crpg resurgence in the 2010s. I think I bought most of the enhanced editions but I don’t think I actually played.

The problem is that I’m nowhere near as spry and curious as I was when I was younger, but I only developed mature tastes and more creative interests as I got older. I would love to make my own modules and stuff, but I’m just too tired and busy nowadays. I just can’t maintain interest in most games anymore.

I can't play most games nowadays, I find them all boring. The easiest way to get dopamine from games now is to play porn/hentai games.

Fallout New Vegas - This was the first proper RPG I ever played (not a Paper Mario or some JRPG) so as a result I put in hundreds of hours into the game. While I have never done everything, still yet to do a Legion playthrough, there is simply little desire for me to touch the game again. It is too simple and easy unless modded which that in of itself can be quite a pain.

Legend of Grimrock - The bare-bones nature of the game in regards to enemy AI and build options combined with the ability to easily out maneuver enemies leads to a game that quickly becomes dull.

I enjoyed both of these game for awhile but there simply becomes a point where it is impossible to enjoy them due to mastering their mechanics.
