Goldeneye is nowhere on either list. On the original list, this guy thinks there were 36 FPS games better than Quake. And then below that, there was Descent. Wasn't Descent a space flight sim? If Descent is FPS, then MechWarrior is FPS, and that should be on the list.

I wonder if half the traffic these sites get is from hate-clicks.

Yes, this is insanity

Goldeneye introduced location based damage (!) and was the Counter Strike before Counter Strike

There is also Counter Strike nowhere on the list

Quake is 37th, yet none of these games would exist without Quake, because Carmack outsourced the engine to Valve which made Half Life

Also no Blood nowhere

Really a plebeian list of someone who wasn't a gamer back in the day

I found this thread by having a weak moment and buying Wolfenstein The New Order on GOG for 5 bucks. Game is full retard consoleport. A sequence of cut scenes and point and click events before even firing a shot. Desinstalled immediately. Did some googling and ended up at the codex once again. Now this Ed Thorn is a clear fag and posted his revised top 25 in 2022:

1. Destiny 2
2. Apex Legends
3. Valorant
4. GTFO
5. Half-Life 2
6. Half-Life: Alyx
7. COD: Black Ops + Zombie Chronicles
8. Deep Rock Galactic
9. Superhot
10. Left 4 Dead
11. Doom Eternal
12. Devil Daggers
13. Team Fortress 2
14. COD: Warzone
15. Hunt: Showdown
16. Neon White
17. Turbo Overkill
18. Warhammer: Vermintide 2
19. Rainbow Six Siege
20. Deathloop
21. Halo Infinite
22. Titanfall 2
23. Boomerang X
24. Resident Evil Village
25. Severed Steel

yeah like I said

cringe list

but it would've been even worse today

Still trying to get my head around that new list this morning. It's laughable. I don't understand. Why are there multiple hero shooters? Why so many live services? Why Halo Infinite? Where are the single player titles? How is Turbo Overkill already one of the greatest FPS games ever when it isn't finished yet? Why is nearly everything <10 years old?

The old list was dumb but at least it showed an understanding of the genre and had some entries on it that most would agree should be there.

Is the author just a total piggie for grindy progression systems? Most of these games seem to have one built in with a few notable exceptions. Did any of these titles represent a landmark or significantly advance the genre in any way other than in new systems to keep your captive swine sucking on the dopamine titty playerbase engaged with the experience. Superhot did something novel and HL2 was a landmark for introducing the Source Engine but otherwise I'm struggling.

Destiny 2, the greatest FPS ever made in this moron's estimation, will cease to be relevant the moment a sequel comes out. Which can be said of literally any of the multiplayer games on this list. None of them will have any longevity beyond when their servers get shut down.

Trying to be edgy by larping an ultra normie. Did it get clicks? then it worked.
I think its probably more likely bald-faced shilling for publisher money. Has to be, especially if its the same author as before. The games are largely multiplayer cash cows with active player bases to whale off.

Sad shit though. Even the old clickbait list at least tried to present itself as a semi-legit exercise. Guess the journos don't even get that much leeway any more. All grift all the time.

I think a theme with modern taste bloggers is to react against people like you or me who sincerely believe (and can very, very strongly argue) that modern stuff is fucking garbage by going hard in the opposite direction - nothing good was made prior to five years ago and anything that was good before then was either neglected by the people who were there to appreciate it or was appreciated for all the wrong reasons. This has a few benefits in their eyes:

1) It’s ragebait that gets clicks

2) It legitimizes their shit taste and alienates and delegitimizes anyone who thinks modern games / music / television / movies are garbage

3) It makes the people who produce these garbage games feel like they’re progressing the medium and not running it headfirst into a ditch

Edit: BTW this is called “poptimism” and I’m hardly original in pointing it out, just noticing it here as well

It's progressive propaganda. They dismiss games from the golden era of gaming because they were made by straight white (or asian) males who were gaming enthusiasts, then praise the current shit designed by committee for the reasons we all know. It's an exercise in demoralization.

If there's genuine conviction behind the arguementation it's more likely a Dunning-Kruger adjacent thing a la Marvel fans attempting to critique actual movies relative to the swill they immerse themselves in.

They only have their fandom of their chosen cultural product to use as a reference point for critique and hence zero understanding of why the thing they like is bad and what makes the other thing good.

It's all about driving 'traffic' to the website, sucking the dick of sponsors, etc.

They do the same thing with music. Modern music is pure and old music is made by racists who raped under age girls all over the place, beat women etc. There are websites all over the internet claiming things like that even naming specific names, which would have been illegal in the past. But you can't sue for defamation when it's just some web page, and when you're dead.

The original list reads like the author pulled names out of lists of FPS past a certain point. Dark Forces then Mysteries of the Sith, and only those two games, an opinion I have never seen before this and likely never will afterwards. People are criticizing it for Descent a 6 degrees of freedom FPS, before completely ignoring Typing of the Dead, a game that revolves around...typing, not shooting. The position of Quake is a weird one, because in my experience people either jizz themselves over it or find it completely boring. Even as clickbait it feels weird. Second list doesn't matter, the author didn't play all those games for any reasonable length of time and half I don't even know now.
This got me thinking,

1. Wolf3D
2. Doom
3. Quake
4. GoldenEye 007
5. Half Life
6. Counter Strike
7. Blood
8. Duke Nukem 3D
9. ?
10. ?
Star Wars: Jedi Knight? Legitimately has the best level design out of any '90s FPS.

Quake, CS 1.6, CS:GO are top 3.
I'm actually surprised with how CS:GO ended up (personally find it better than 1.6 now, but not better than quake), and its honestly the only hope for any FPS with competitive elements. Valorant to 5v5 Tactical FPS is essentially what Mass Effect 3 is to RPGs.

The fuck is console trash going on the list? Doom also makes Doom 2 reduntant as fuck. Stalker isn't a pure shooter and Half-Life's shooting is dogshit. Right about Wolf3D and console's first FPS tho.

Swap Doom2 or Stalker for Ashes: afterglow.
Don't get me started on goldenturd. And it's not the first shooter on consoles. Not even close.
Turok is fantastic, as are hundreds of great games on all kinds of platforms beyond the PC you're missing out on. I'm sorry to hear that you're an idiot. Get emulating and fix your retardation.

You the kinda guy that won't watch porn on your smartphone because it's not a desktop PC with 4k monitor and surround sound.

If shooters only so nothing like System Shock or Deus Ex or STALKER, and not including multiplayer shooters.

1. Doom
2. Quake
3. Blood
4. Half-Life
5. FEAR
6. Duke Nukem 3D
7. Doom 3
8. Soldier of Fortune
9. Kingpin
10. Painkiller

I think for any sane person the first three spots are reserved for Doom, Quake, and a build engine game of their choice, then from there it comes down to personal preferences for shooters made in the 90s through the early 2000s. Despite FPS seeming like it is one of the most prevalent genres, and there is a cliche of hearing people groaning about "yet another FPS", I had trouble coming up with games past number 6 or so. Quake 2 might be on there but I haven't replayed it recently enough to make a judgement.

Painkiller is a very interesting choice. Game has the sickest audio/video presentation, but the actual gameplay is just holding S button and shooting two-three types of enemies per level. As far as arena shooters go, I prefer Serious Sam TSE over Painkiller.

Serious Sam TSE is another game I haven't played recently enough to make much of a judgement, but the presentation of Painkiller would probably put it above any Serious Sam game for me anyway. Also I think the enemy damage reactions and general feeling of the guns in Painkiller make the shooting more satisfying. The Kleer in Serious Sam games are the absolute worst enemy to fight.

There are few things as unproductive, reductive and plain stupid as putting together top ten lists. So I made my own within a couple of minutes, imbued with idiosyncratic notions that elevate some games that are oft forgotten, no doubt to a salubrious helping of chagrin on the part of those who take these things more seriously than deserved.
  1. Blood
  2. F.E.A.R.
  3. Operation: Flashpoint
  4. Prey (2006)
  5. SiN
  6. Cryostasis
  7. Dark Forces II
  8. Hexen II
  9. Unreal
  10. Ion Maiden

Will be brave and go for top 30:

1. Doom

5. Ashes: Afterglow (normally wouldn't include mods but this is an entire new game almost from scratch, and super good)
6. Shadow Warrior
7. Blood
8. Turok
9. Unreal
10. Half-Life
11. Doom Eternal
12. Turok 2
13. Quake 2
14. Doom 64
15. Heretic
16. Return To Castle Wolfenstien
17. Wolfenstien (2009)
18. Far Cry 4
19. Alien Trilogy
20. Red Faction
21. Sin
22. Half-Life 2
23. Powerslave
24. Rage 2
25. Medal of Honor (1999)
26. Doom 2016
27. Disruptor
28. Doom 3
29. Hexen
30. Chasm: The Rift

Expansion packs excluded (e.g Opposing force. Final Doom), as well as mods.
Also, game has to be pure enough of a shooter.
