I don't think immersion is about forgetting you're playing a game - I have never felt the urge to put on a robe and wizard hat in real life - I think it's more about being prepared to treat a game like a real place instead of a set of tasks and rules to manipulate to increase your high score.

Saving the village because you want to see the villagers safe, not because you'll get xp. Dressing your character in furs when crossing the ice fields, because it looks right, not because you take damage if you don't. Etc. Arcanum isn't great because of its excellent combat system or well-balanced skill tree.

Yes. I didn't use my words well. The world of Arcanum just pulled me in the way no other game has ever done before or after. I wanted to see everything, and do things differently on different runs, but my inner self is always a goody-two-shoes on first runs. I did want to help everyone, and the bad guys felt villainy in a good way. A bit overdone, but in the way that make you hate them.
