RPG Vault has posted Interview #2 with Tim Cain of Troika about Temple of Elemental Evil. Here's a taste of the magic:

Jonric: How extensive will the magic system be? Are you creating any original spells or implementing any features not seen in other D&D titles?

Tim Cain: We are implementing a few hundred spells of levels 0 through 5. I think the coolest thing about our magic system is the target system for spells. You can actually see the area of effect of any spell in the game. When you throw a Fireball, for instance, you are given a circle that you can move around the screen, and any target within the circle gets highlighted. We are supporting spells that can have multiple targets, like Magic Missile, and even ones with variable size areas of effect, like Wall of Fire. These features make combat magic feel very strategic.

TACTICAL, Tim! The word is tactical! Roar! Feel my pedantic wrath!

We got so many questions, I left quite a bit out.

Tim was growling at me that it was time to cut it short. Something about developers and thinking a dev chat is only an hour long.

Showing the spell's area of effect is the best idea I've ever heard... I don't know how many times I've tryed to set a skull trap trap in BG, and accidentally alerted the monsters.

triCritical i know that Saint_Proverbius would never tell you that but well it is ok.

And oh Saint_Proverbius what i am going to tell now is only my opinion

My opinion
Since the name of the person that ask the question also appears on the chat that many people see , some people may see their names appearing on the chat as a sing of recognition that they are "old" ,"respected" in the Troika fan boys community. It gives them a sense of "importance" of "Kudos"

So Saint_Proverbius and the other ops may in my opinion have some delicate balances to respect

In other word if you stay in the forums gain respect by increasing your post count a lot with good quality post's or do something else to become "known" as a Troika fan boy you will have much more chances of seeing your question appear in the next Troika chat .

Long live the King Tim Cain and the Spirit of a Fallout non linear turn based game.

as to the "marketing departments " BOO NOOBS !"

/end of my opinion

At the beginning, I posted all the questions in the order they popped in to the people who who were asking them. However, I got many, many questions in the first 15 minutes, so..

chrisbeddoes. A question's merits should be based on the question, not the person. What a load of rubbish.

The targeting area was used in all of SSI's Gold Box games and Pool of Radiance came out in what 1988? IIRC Stink Cloud was a 2x2 box, Sleep 3X3 box and Fireball used a large circle you could move around the screen.

Eye of the Beholder for the GBA also used this. Same thing with the tilesize being the area of effect.

....and a log book that tracks quests, reputations and certain ego stats (like number of undead killed to date).

Heheheh, I just love ego stats
Would be great if they include some neat reputations and traits as they did in arcanum and fallout. Was nice to become the enemy of stillwater, or a boxing champ or (best of all imo) a porn star

I'm pretty sure I remember Tim saying that stuff would be in ToEE in one of the recent interviews.

I can't wait to kill me some undead...oh, how I loathe the undead.

That's pretty much how it worked. I posted Dan's questions to Deathy and Mistress first, since I had those ready to go before the chat. He said he couldn't make it and asked if he could email me them, which is standard procedure for when I do these. The next few came from Sahin, because he was at the top of my /MSG list, and I went in order from there.

Now, in the case of triCritical's missing question, I only got the one. It's entirely possible that bersIRC dropped one of them since it has a rare glitch in it where it drops the first thing someone messages you.

Shortly after Spazmo's questions, I started filtering. I dropped a few of Kal_the_Paladin's questions, since those were about portraits and hair color. Basically, I'd rather spend Troika's time asking more important questions than how you can doll up your character. Hell, most of his questions were of the "doll up" nature, like will cloaks be visible. Then he asked about uber items, which I even allowed, though I'm not fond of ph4t l3wt questions.

Basically, once I thought there might be a timing problem, I went in order of who sent the questions, followed by filtering questions to make sure there was some substance to them. After all, I think Eric Dallaire's question about unlike diety priests, AnimatedU's question on the nature of alignments and true neutral, Joe_Smoke's non-lethal force use, and so on deserved to be asked first. If there was time later, I'd post the sillier questions about paper dolls and portraits. If I'd asked the sillier questions, those good ones would have never been answered.

That make sense?

The only "delicate balance" which needs respecting is that between decent questions and questions regarding the abilty to change your character''s skin colour.

Post count shouldn't have a thing to do with it. Particularly since having the chat dominated by recognised "fanboys" would be quite offputting for other people.

Vault Dweller and MF .

I totally agree with you . You are completely right.
Why do you think that we have a difference in opinion ?

Saint P why do you have to explain the things that you did ?
It is your site and you can do anything that you like with it .
You do not have to explain anything to anyone.
I totally believe it that you did it the way you say .
But you did not have to say anything .

Non all decisions are consious .
Many decisions are unconsious .
In the real world.
Charisma can help you persuade someone else in a consious way.
Beauty can help you persuade someone in an unconsious way.

In the internet world

Charisma is the merit of the question
Beauty is the reputation of the one that ask the question.

Of course this is only my opinion.

However i do not find the opinion of others as crap.

I didn't mean to stir contraversy. Having a cross between thick skin and being easy, I really do not care if a question or two is left out. And I don't think its that important. I only mentioned it, because I thought the question about tactical combat and using the enviroment such as the surrounding furniture was of interest to some of the members on the board.

Oh i just forgot to mention that the first time that i visited #Arcanum long ago i was asked if i was sleeperservice and when i said yes i was instantly kicked out of the channel.

So just let me insist that reputation always counts

Maybe consciously in some people decisions maybe unconsciously in other people decisions and maybe not at all in other people decisions .

Well, Saint and triCritical, I assure you I sent both of the questions.

I rather liked how Joe_Smoke's question on subdual damage prompted Tim Cain to put something new into the game.

Yup, then that's the bersIRC 1.40 /MSG bug. It's funny, I switched from PIRCH98 to bersIRC because bersIRC was being developed and PIRCH98 wasn't, but bersIRC's devs haven't pumped out a new version in a while.
