Per part of <a href="http://www.gamespy.com">GameSpy</a>'s <a href="http://www.gamespy.com/gdc2003">coverage of GDC</a>, they decided to ask <b>Tim Cain</b> a <a href="http://www.gamespy.com/gdc2003">few questions</a>, like this one:
<br>
<br>
<blockquote><b>GameSpy:</b> Of all the games that have come out in the last year, which one amazed you the most? Which one disappointed you?
<br>
<br>
<b>Cain:</b> Dungeon Siege pulled off the continuous world better than we did in Arcanum and I was jealous. So I really enjoyed Dungeon Siege. As far as disappointments, there weren't that many PC games that really grabbed for my attention enough that I built up any expectation for, so I can't say I was disappointed by anything.</blockquote>

It's hard to argue that <A href="http://www.dungeonsiege.com/index.shtml">Dungeon Siege</a> didn't have a nice engine, that's for sure.

I would argue that. I guess it depends in what you look for in an engine.

Huge worlds that look very nice? For fantasy rpg's I think it would be orgasmatic.

Unless you prefer turn-based combat and/or interaction with the huge & pretty world...

I was refering to the graphics engine.

But IMO its just not that hard to do. I will say that GPG did the right think going with cartoony graphics which looked pretty good on a lot of different machines. However, cartoony graphics will almost always ruin a CRPG for me. But for the most part the engine was incapable of bringing nothing more then a bad anime film. I think engines have to be capable of bringing to life more then just a cartoon.

I disagree, with TC as well. Arcanum actually made a continuous world, where as DS made a continuous linear track where the environment changed. Its hardly a world.

Arcanum isn't continuous though, it just LOOKS like it is. Stop in the middle of no where, then drop an item. Then run away from that item in a set direction. At some point, you'll just run across that same item again.

As for the cartoony look of the game, that has more to do with the models and textures than it does the engine itself.
