Good news* for dungeon keepers out there, as Evil Genius 2: World Domination, the sequel to the widely known Bond villain simulator of 2004, has just been released. It can be grabbed on Steam for 40 buckeronis.

Developed by Rebellion, one of Europe’s largest independent studios and the creators of Sniper Elite and Zombie Army series, Evil Genius 2 lets you live out your dreams of being the bad guy. Build your evil lair in intricate detail. Recruit and train a workforce of loyal minions and powerful henchmen. Defend your base from the meddling Forces of Justice. Dominate the world stage by unleashing your own unique brand of super-villainy upon humanity.

Evil Genius 2: World Domination features:
  • Four unique campaigns – play as narcissist despot Max, heavy-muscle madman Ivan, manipulative ex-spymaster Emma or scientist zealot Zalika. Guide your chosen evil genius through their own distinct story-based campaign as they impose their twisted vision upon an unsuspecting globe.
  • Three island locations – choose where to build your supervillain HQ from three island paradises, each with their own gameplay challenges. From the outside your base looks like a beautiful casino resort, but behind closed doors lies all manner of unimaginable evil.
  • Intuitive lair-building – design, build and customize your lair as you see fit. With modern base-building mechanics and loads of gameplay features totally new to the series, including multiple-floored lairs, strategy fans will feel right at home with Evil Genius 2.
  • New rooms, henchmen, agents, contraptions, traps and more – Evil Genius 2 features tons of menacing characters and devilish devices to use to your advantage. From the deliciously fatal Sushi Chef to the always famished Venus Spy-Trap, you have a huge number of ways to stop the Forces of Justice from foiling your dastardly plans.
  • World domination 2.0 – Take to the world stage and execute your campaign of total supremacy. Send your minions and henchmen on missions across the globe as you exert your influence and control over world regions. Complete lucrative schemes, expand your criminal network, recruit new henchmen and steal all manner of useful loot – from the Doors to Fort Knox to a living, breathing dodo.

* Your mileage may vary because I have no idea if this game is actually any good, though the fact that it releases with a season pass makes me wary.

I was reading the reviews of this and a lot of people feel that the game lacks a lot of depth and is compared to a mobile game.
Hard pass for me.

Didnt the original had the depth of a mobile game?
Yes, but the criticism is more along the line of:

Why the fuck did they not improve upon the original game (other than graphics/sound)?

Make the Codex Great Again!
The original game was excellent fun! If there's nothing to improve and they're giving us more of the same, then I'm in.

It's just light-strategy fun. The original game was "mobile" level complex, i.e. not very.

It was still a damn good game and I'm happy that there's a sequel.

Steam-only release makes it a hard pass for me. Making people have to sign up for Steam DRM to run your shit is fucking obnoxious.

Dungeon Keeper 2 is still the best game of this type.

What happened to that DK2 spiritual successor, War for the Overworld? Wasn't it good?

War for the Overworld was only adequate unfortunately. It could have been great, but the campaign was way too formulaic and easy - iirc only one or two of the levels provided any challenge.

Not that I have a problem with it, but why does the homepage news feed suddenly cover non-RPGs as well?

The first Evil Genius had a solid premise but got a bit tedious as you played on. From what I hear it's similar with the sequel. Will need to check it out eventually.

)))they((( allowed (((infi))) to get proud of his work and quality news feed over past years. Now they keep diluting it in order to hurt his feelings, possibly this might be his only weakness

Keeper Roguelike is fun and so is Dungeons 3, which has co-op. Dungeons 3 is a meme game so be warned.

This took me by total surprise! I loved Evil Genius. This trailer looks like more of the same, but lacking in the James Bond parody aspects. Thanks for the news!

Dungeons 3 would be infinitely better if they didn't try to be funny. I wouldn't mind a more serious Dungeon Keeper-inspired game.

This game has waaay too much timers. At some point, you'll be spending lots of time on the world map, juggling various timers, instead of having fun in the base. The fact that all your minions are resources as well is both blessing and a curse.

This looked so gewd but then I read my boy Jaedar’s review on steam and it mirrors a lot of the other negative reviews. Drawn out banal shit boring mid game once you get past the initial base building, it seems

Yeah. You can view my gradual souring on the game in the dedicated thread. From "This seems neat but not better than original" to "issues are arising" to "fuck this shit".

Seems I'm not the only one to have experienced this either, as steam reviews went from 80% positive to 60% over a week.

The devs seem to be promising various patches (how else are they going to sell DLC?), but to make this game actually good I think it would take a pretty big redesign which I doubt will happen. Currently there's a very strong argument for just letting investigators to whatever they like in your base, because the body bags they generate if you try to deal with them are way more troublesome than the heat they create from escaping with maxed suspicion.

You could give KeeperRL a spin for something along those lines that adds a bunch of new stuff. I played it for a few weeks a couple dozen alphas ago. It's not bad at all.

For some reason I was thinking about KeeperFX, which is the source port of Dungeon Keeper and comes with a bunch of custom campaigns. Now I'm tempted to just replay the first DK.
