A press release at Blue's News informs that a new RPG from EA games has been announced: Lord of the Rings: The White Council.
CHERTSEY, UK July 13, 2006 – Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) announced today the development of The Lord of the Rings™, The White Council™, an all-new role playing game (RPG) for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and PC. The game, inspired by the New Line Cinema feature film trilogy that grossed more than $3 billion, will feature an original storyline derived from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings novels under an agreement with EA. The game is scheduled to ship in late 2007.
“Our extremely talented and dedicated team is committed to creating an incredible new experience for fans of The Lord of the Rings and role playing gamers,” said Steve Gray, executive producer, The Lord of the Rings, The White Council. “With its next generation gameplay and epic new storyline, we think The Lord of the Rings, The White Council will be a huge success.” Players have the freedom to explore the open world of Tolkien’s Middle-earth™ in The Lord of the Rings, The White Council.

Players can choose their role as a man, an elf, a dwarf, or a hobbit. Each role’s destiny is to become a hero allied with the White Council, whose members include the famed characters Gandalf, Saruman, Galadriel, and Elrond.

A combination of stunning graphics and expansive environments, along with the freedom of movement demonstrates the innovation and quality of the next-generation RPG, where players can create their own adventures. The Lord of the Rings, The White Council has not yet been rated by PEGI. For more information about the game, please visit: www.whitecouncil.ea.com.
So it's, uh, "next-generation" and you can play the role of a hobbit. Great.

This was announced ages ago (at least as a concept) and the hivemind almost got it right. Instead of playing the White Council characters, you get to play a mini-me version of them instead in a cookie-cutter hack'n'slash 'RPG'.

Damnit, how could we be so wrong?

In RPGs, you choose your destiny. In the Next Generation, destiny chooses you.

Always has. Can you become President of the Enclave and unleash the final destruction in Fallout 2?

Best you can do as an evil character is 'do nothing'.

There are no true 'open-ended' RPGs, if you want real meaningful alternative paths you have to srcipt them.

"Extremely talented and dedicated team"
"Next generation gameplay"
"Epic storyline"

They seriously need to run their crap by bullfighter

For ONCE, I'd like to see some PR bozo NOT use the terms above, just as I'd like to see a recent hollywood movie that doesn't have a happy ending. For example. something like:

"Our totally untalented and lazy ass team of code monkey retards might perhaps create an RPG with retardo-generation gameplay and a stupid storyline stolen from a cartoon"

Some possibilities are better then none. The difference beetwin some possibilities and none is big because your action have a meaning even if there is only 4 possible different results it not makes your choosing pointless, and you should consider what you say for exemple.

They might want to leave out the word retard not for political correctness but just because pretty much only pre-teens and teeny boppers have embraced the term, using it for pretty much anything that requires some kind of adjective. It's generation gap slang. It dates anyone who uses it. Never fails to make me cringe. So now I know your age bracket too. Very convenient. Otherwise we older folks might end up chatting with a 10 year old without realizing it. Always a frightening experience.

Of course. I'm just saying there are very few RPGs that succeed in a lot of open-endedness, the majority have a low number of alternative paths.

Its a EA title ... its hard to get much excited over EA titles.

They play safe to a point they dont add anything inovative or new to the gender, simply recyled market proven ideas and gameplay.

What Project Grey "LotR:The Toilet Paper" will be is either WoW or Oblivion (or both).

Ah, so this is meant to be their super innovative "we don't just do FIFA 200x" project to halt their horrendous developer turnover?

A new skool RPG, handily positioned after the massive commercial success of Oblivion, that's innovation.

"freedom of movement", woo.

Give it up loser. This game was in development well before Oblivion's release, dumbass.

...and you seriously believe that after Oblivion made mega $$$$ the suits in EA didn't get on the phone and start telling the dev. team to "make it like a LOTOR Oblivion", if that wasn't already the instruction in the first place (which it probably was given EA's creative track record).

Fallout 2 wasn't exactly the pinnacle of game design, also.

Also: This game sounds horrible.

LotR movie license + Oblivion clone = Mediocre game that earns tons of cash for EA

I'm betting that in the end, the game will be more like Fable than Oblivion though, angering thousands of fanboys. Codexers still won't care.
