Black Isle's J.E. Sawyer has posted in the Interplay Forums a link to a wallpaper from the BIS project codenamed "Jefferson", delayed or maybe even canned because our beloved Interplay didn't pay for the Baldur's Gate license for PC, extending the console one up to 2008 instead. Here it is, anyway:

Say what? What's this about Jefferson possibly being put on hold?

Oh wait, never mind. I just found the 15 page thread on the Interplay forums that explains it all. :sigh:

hey

I would love to read that thread, but I was banned for the 4th time at the IP boards and the last one wasn't a simple delete the cookie to get back in IP ban either.

Anyone think the wallpaper looks like a farewell picture?

Jefferson = Baldur's Gate 3

Interplay lost the license for BG/D&D for the PC though they still have the right to release console games under the license. Stupid move.

I hope J.E. Sawyer salvages the operation. I'm sure he can change the characters, place names in Jefferson and some parts of the storyline to fit a different, or better yet - a new game universe.

Box Art? Largely the proportions, but you'l notice the unfilled scroll running across the bottom of the window pane (right under the man and dog.) At the top, amidst the interwoven curls, is a flat unscribed area.

Jefferson was supposed to be Baldurs Gate 3? You'd write BG3 into the upper portion and in smaller print add the subtitle to the scroll.

Its of course, conjecture, but if it was a wallpaper or ingame art they'd use 4:3.

According to some sources, Jeff was not supposed to be BG3, but a new title (although still Forgotten Realms one).

But did Interplay own the license to make a different FR story than BG3, I do not recall exactly?I thought it had to be BG3. Well the title at least. In BG2 there is little Baldur's Gate to be seen. The following lines are from the Interplay Annual Report, but are pretty vague regarding their FR license.

Annual Report SEC Form: In February 2003, we amended our license agreement with Infogrames, the
holder of the TSR license which we rely on to publish the Baldur's Gate,
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, and Icewind Dale titles, to, among other things,
(i) extend the license term for approximately an additional two years to
December 31, 2008 (provided we make a timely extension payment required for such
extension), and (ii) extend our rights with respect to certain of the Advanced
Dungeons & Dragons properties. The amendment further terminates our rights to
certain titles in the event Interplay is unable to obtain certain third-party
waivers in accordance with the terms of the amendment. We were unable to obtain
the required waivers within the permitted time period and as a result have lost
rights to publish Baldur's Gate 3 and its sequels on the PC, a significant
product franchise. We are in negotiations with Infogrames to reinstate these
rights, but no assurance can be given that we will be successful.

I especially like "The amendment further terminates our rights to certain titles in the event Interplay is unable to obtain certain third-party waivers in accordance with the terms of the amendment. We were unable to obtain the required waivers within the permitted time period . What kind of legal Labyrinthine BS is this? They wrote it down so that it looks Interplay can't be blamed for losing the rights, but the third-party which refused the waivers. Who would this third-party be and what are the waivers? Or might this party be BIOware/Atari?

It's also nice to see how much Interplay recieved in the three months after their dispute with BIOware in publishing NWN: $5,6 million.
In January 2002, we settled a dispute with a developer related to the sale
of publishing rights for one of our products and the recognition of deferred
revenue for a licensing transaction. We sold the publishing rights to this title
to the distributor in connection with a settlement agreement entered into with
the third party developer. The settlement agreement provided, among other
things, that we assign our rights and obligations under the product agreement to
the third party distributor. As a result, we recorded net revenues of $5.6
million in the three months ended March 31, 2002.
It looks like they accidently sold thier right to publish BG3 in the NWN/BIOware transaction. The settlement agreement provided, among other things, that we assign our rights and obligations under the product agreement to the third party distributor.

I'm quite certain that was a farewell picture.
