There's quite a decent update over on the Divinity 2 forums pretty much talking about the crunch-time of game development. Initiate copy-paste:

Luckily we have good producers and leads dealing with all the interesting and relevant information but nonetheless, for some reason, people still expect me to be aware of it all. I actually find that very reasonable, but due to a perhaps not incredibly exemplary lifestyle, my memory doesn’t have sufficient cells to absorb it all. I’ve discovered that some kind of self defense mechanism started operating which prioritizes information the moment I hear it and if it’s not at priority super one, it filters it out immediately.

Anyways, to use some heavy words, my point is that modern day game development involves very complicated production processes and because gamers, rightfully so btw, have become very demanding, the impact on what developers have to deal with during their development cycle has changed significantly compared to when I started in this industry, some 10 years ago or so. And I’m not so sure that the form it’s taken, is such a good thing for producing great games.

I remember that when I was making I often thought of some particularly cool gameplay feature I implemented that day and that was in general a happy thought to go to sleep with. Nowadays, I often go to sleep going through a check list of all the stuff I forgot to do today, dealing with all the stuff I mentioned in the opening paragraph, and frankly, that’s not such a happy mechanism for getting good dreams. I still try to pick up on some gameplay feature I saw, as sadly I’m not implementing them myself anymore, but it’s definitely not the same feeling anymore since it’s tainted by all the non--game-development stuff.

Yup. Divinity 2 is well on its way to being a bug-ridden piece of shit. Look for the patch on release day! Though the article is certainly well-worth a full read.

Whenever I hear a 'RPG' developer say 'cool gameplay feature' I want to projectile vomit over their 'next gen, immershun, shiney' heads

This time I get to play the national fanboi.

Did your PM learned the national anthem yet?

I bet that people around him forced him to do it in case he get asked to sing it the next National Day. Actually I'm pretty sure the press will hunt him down that day for that purpose.

Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to get any sense of enthusiasm or accomplishment when reading through dev blogs, or even reading between the lines of interviews or forum posts from folks involved in creating games these days.

At best, you might sense some pride in having gotten an interesting bit of story or game mechanic into the final product. But mostly it just seems that the market forces which impose such a pervasive mediocrity on the process have sucked the soul right out of it.

Anyway(s), from the outside looking in, looks like it sucks almost as bad for the devs as it does for the players.

My thoughts as well. I *really* was looking forward to Divinity II, and I enjoyed Divine Divinity. While flawed, it still was an enjoyable game (for me).

I just cannot summon any interest at all for Divinity II, it's like you said, it's soul has completely been sucked out.

Sad really.

People haven't played Divinity 2 yet they already know it's gonna be a soulless POS.

Morons.

What I'm more worried is that it will be released about the same time as Dragon Age, thus it will be crushed both my marketing and quality. HAHA.

The quests look pretty good, don't know about the general look yet though. Becoming a flying dragon is a big bet they're taking, how is that gonna be balanced...

National fanboy reporting for duty as well. :)

Im cautiously hopefull for this game as a big fan of Divine Divinity.

I just don't know how the 3D graphics will translate. In the first game the world was so interactive, but history has shown that 3D worlds most things are pretty static.
