Shadowrun Returns is making the frontpage news of Kotaku by offering a sneak peek of some character models and new concept art.

Here's a scene they call The Stuffer Shack:
xlarge.jpg
The Stuffer Shack scene is composed with the actual in-game character models so you can get a sense of how the 2D environments and 3D characters merge. The art team took a little liberty with the posing of the characters (which might not be quite as dynamic given that it's a turn based game) but we think it's within the realm of their creative license. The scene roughly depicts our camera zoom level on tablet. When playing on a desktop machine, you'll be able to set your window to show a larger scene. (Time to invoke a classic game development caveat: this zoom level, like most elements of our design is subject to change.)

Raptor arms orc aside, the 2D background/3D character blend looks fine. Let's hope we get to see some actual screenshots or videos soon.

No soup for you!

The environment looks great. I especially admire the worn scaffolding behind the Stuff R Shack. The characters are improved, but still look about off, IMO. They feel kind of... vertically challenged? Squashed?

These look great. So, at least the art design part of this Kickstarter project was not a scam. Good.

Me too.
But i hope the writing will be more "noir" than the character design.

This looks great. Characters are still a bit too cartoony/caricature-like, but otherwise it looks like what I'd expect from a modern SNES Shadowrun. Definitely better looking than Wasteland 2, in my opinion. Now we'll just have to see how well they can do the systems and storytelling.

I don't think the characters look any better here than in the previous preview. The big guy is almost as tall as the goddamn house and the other characters stick out a bit too much as well. The background looks awesome again, but the "browser game" feel is still present with the characters.

The orcs and trolls with their comical tiny legs look ridiculous, a disgrace for Shadowrun. Although WoW elf ears...

Shouldn't they be posting something real by now, the game should be out in a couple of months...

It's always "soon" with indie developers. They are above the stresses inflicted upon humanity by schedules. :smug:

Way better than the previous preview, where they had that weird glow around the characters.
The downside is that now the characters blend much too easily with the background. Needs to be addressed.

"Early 2013" suggests they have up to 10. Six or seven at the very least.

Overall I'm happy with how it looks. The backgrounds are really nice (yeah to hand painted backgrounds!!) and as long as the combat and story are descent I can live with the characters look. I have to admit that it looks better than I thought based on how their causal games look.

In my dictionary early 2013 means 7 months at most (1Q13). So now you can make the game in 7 months? The assets, implementation, testing, branching and etc. WL2 at least has 1.5 years. Will be simplistic as shit or a scam...

Could use more clutter and dirt. Characters do indeed look a bit odd. Might be alcohol consumption on my part, though. Anyway, glad to see this happening. :hooked on SR:
