The biggest danger in Morrowind modding is not having moderation. Be very picky.

What I don't get: most of this list is small cosmetic changes that haven't been updated for >4 years. Apparently nobody has thought of combining them into one of the larger texture packs that is already there? Anyway, now I'm so far down the list that there's really no going back.

Personally I will direct you to the nexus. Most of the current modding community in english resides in the morrowind modding community server at discord and hosts in the nexus all of their creations.

https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind

Also there is a lot of modern work coming from the english and russian speaking communities but they are usually hard to keep track of unless you stay on the top of things but some solid work will always be a staple even if its old.

I am currently on a project with a friend in trying to port some of the oldest mods from modding history/fliggerty/old modders to the ligth of 2020/2021

I for example, as an Argonian exclusive player ported this one: https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/48668

It is an Old mod by Adul but simple and easy to use and install, made some cleanups of the old mod (which was very dirty) and made it more modern mod standards compliant,

In particular I find the nexus an extremely easy to use and wide scope modding platform and an excellent repository for Morrowind Mods, try it! :D

Really dont care about most mods, most modders have a particular idea of how the game should be and most of the time involves large doses of autism that actually dont make the game better. The only mods I care on Bethesda games are the ones with new areas like Tamriel Rebuilt or stuff like Requiem that is mandatory to make Skyrim playable, even Requiem, I only installed it because the gameplay was such a streamlined boring garbage on Skyrim that it was worthy to deal with modder shenanigans to salvage it.

So, any mod that add new quests and locations that is actually decent for Morrowind outside Tamriel Rebuilt?

As someone with borderline autism on how Morrowind should be/look I have to ask to you what exactly are you looking for? You can do a wide filter on Lore Compliant and Borderline CHIM fueled dreams.

What you want out of quests? Interesting ones? or just more quests to fill your jorunal? Both have target audiences

Lore Compliant interesting side aspects of life in Morrowind I can vouch for this one:
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/46772

It explores smuggling and enhances some of the Balmora and outskirt areas into an interesting questline.

If you just want more lore compliant quests then try this one:
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/46817

It adds specifics quests for the Ashlanders, small, to the point and meshes well with the game

If you still want more quests and want to go a bit into light CHIM territory (out of the scope of original game) but still lore compliant-ish, this is a fabulous quest mod :
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/46928

It lets you roleplay a Bounty Hunter .... which can be what you are looking for.

There are gazillion quests mods, some are "classic" others are completely new .

For the Modathon early in the year I participated in this particular mod that remakes Tel-Aruhn
https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/49171

it expands the tower, adds new npcs and yes, it adds quests and it is lore compliant as well , can give it a try, was a fun challenge!

If you feel the leveling experience is too streamlined in Morrowind as well as Skyrim, then please try CCCP, it completely changes everything and is 100% customizable!

I have but one problem with lore friendly mods for Morrowind.

Give me lore friendly that is actually lore friendly and not shit, you n'wah.
:obviously:

Oh man! You would love so much to talk with Qualia in the Lore-talk channel .

If you want the most 100% true DUNMER Lore Compliant modlist you should ask in #lore-talk in the Morrowind Modding Community channel, tell Qualia I sent you and ask around :)

I too feel this need and a lot of people fail to understand what is lore compliant and what is not, and some people go to the extremes to keep "purity" of vision while modding. Love this thread haha

This is something I believe is lacking in the modlist as I am the kind of guy that plays to walk around the game doing anything but the Main Quest:

AURA

Aura is to put it simple, sheer acoustic bliss. Some people play Morrowind for the story, the quests, the world, etc. For people that like to "explore" Vvardenfell, that enjoy putting up a tent in the middle of nowhere, light a fire and then stargaze AURA brings the experience to a new level with headphones on. When you hear the difference between vanilla sounds and the world with AURA it is quite noticeable!

I always recommend this mod to others if they too are inteested in that particular aspect of the game. For me it stuck forever in my modlist once I saw the sun rise over Vivec and was able to hear the local fauna buzzing, croaking and living around me on the shore of Ebonheart

Updated the OP.

General changes:
- overhauled some subsections by putting minor mods in a "Minor mods" spoiler tag, so as not to clutter up the list too much. Typically, those will be mods that only edit one quest or modify a minor aspect of the game.
- split the Roleplay section into two subsections: Quest Alternatives and Gameplay Tweaks.
- added a new Inns & Taverns subsection within the Dialogue section and moved The Publicans mod to this subsection.
- added note about the latest version change for Clear Your Name
- removed note about LGNPC Ebonheart release
- changed all instances of "Gavrilo93" into "AliceL93" since that modder changed her moniker on the Nexus.

Mod additions:
- added 3 new mods in Roleplay - Quest Alternatives (Therana vs Trerayna by AliceL93, Immersive Neloth Reward by AliceL93, Hiring Guards for the Redoran Stronghold - Honorable Solution by AliceL93)
- added 2 new mods in Roleplay - Gameplay Tweaks (More Exclusive Factions by AliceL93 and Lucevar, Merlord's Character Backgrounds by Merlord)
- added 8 new mods in Dialogue - Inns & Taverns (Atmospheric Delights by Lucevar, Atmospheric South Wall Corner Club by Balathustrius and RandomPal, Even Seedier Eight Plates by Von Django and Lucevar, TGD 01 The Rat in the Pot by DebiDalio, TGD 02 Aldruhn Council Club by DebiDalio, TGD 03 The Lizard's Head by DebiDalio, Lively Black Shalk Cornerclub by Endify, Dirtier Cozier Muriel's Cornerclub by MachiHamRandySandwich)
- added 2 new mods in Immersion - Consistency Fixes (Justice for Khartag by RandomPal and Vegetto88, Redoran Freeloaders by AliceL93)
- added 5 new mods in Immersion - Less static world (Settled Jiub by Ava Aelius/OlivertheSkunk, Escort Caius by zariaq, Harvest's End Festival by AliceL93, Fort Moonmoth Fundraiser Dinner by AliceL93, Consequences for Looting the Andrano Tomb by AliceL93)
- added 1 new mod in Faction Expansion - Thieves Guild (Strike at the Camonna Tong by ProfArmitage)
- added 1 new mod in Faction Expansion - Thieves Guild, Mages Guild and Fighters Guild (Imperial Factions by Danae123)

The next update will include some additional faction expansions mods, post-MQ mods as well as town overhauls with unique dialogue.

There are new LGNPC releases? Are they any good?

The long-awaited LGNPC Ebonheart module has been quietly released some time last year but I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

Other than that, People of Pelagiad could be considered an unofficial replacement for / alternative to the terribad LGNPC Pelagiad module.

I noticed Suran on their website as well. Urgh. Playthrough again?

Indeed I had missed that, good catch. Since the old bethsoft forums went down (and the official LGNPC thread with it), I haven't found a way to keep track of LGNPC updates other than by checking from time to time the downloads section of their website, which isn't very practical.

Wow, I don't really follow the mod scene regularly any more but that is sad: Those forums contained two decades worth of information, including tons of stuff by Kirkbride. Seems like a colossal act of destruction. Was it a case of declining activity?

I didn't follow what happened very closely but I think it was just a case of Bethesda going "hey let's relaunch our forums in a completely new way" a few years ago. Unsurprinsingly, the user base (at least for Morrowind) didn't like it and just sort of evaporated toward different fan forums and, unfortunately, Discord servers. The current official Bethesda Morrowind forum is nearly dead and has recently been closed by Bethesda as they are moving their official forums to Discord.

Only the Nexus remains as a central and comprehensive mod repository AFAIK. For other news, you have to search on various forums and Discord servers - mod news are scattered all over the place and would be a nightmare to follow if not for the Nexus.

Morrowind Optimization Patch v10.0 and Intelligent Textures v3.0 are out

Intellitextures would probably look pretty dope with good shaders, never got to test those when I was making my regional ENB shader (too bad I lost it to a HD crash along with my mod setup). There's probably a better DoF shader out by now as well.

It's possible to have morrowind shaders that have unique settings for each region (problem was finding good textures). Found some of my old IG screenshots.

This guy is hilarious:

Very amusing how he mixes gameplay of TR with tidbits of history. Informative too. Pretty funny, the correlation between the pandemic and the increase of MW modding. Makes me almost sad to think of how much TR content there is that I haven't gotten around to playing. Last time I really played it a lot, most of the content was in Telvanni areas, and although it had a cool quest line, it wasn't really finished. The quality and diversity of the quests seems pretty amazing.

The new TR maps are really high quality. I liked the earlier work even if it is rough around the edges, but the new maps are something else.

Hopefully they have writers around that can match the mapmakers in terms of talent - though judging from the vast majority of quest mods, that's unlikely.

So I made a new install that simplified things a lot compared to what I tried last year. I'm playing on a toaster, so installing a whole bunch of graphics stuff is pretty pointless. I use MGE XE to get 3x distant land, and otherwise follow the settings from Sigourn's modding guide, just not the shaders and other shit. Sigourn's settings are supposed to keep the foggy aesthetic of the game, and this seems to work well from what I can see. With these settings, I also no longer seem to have the problem of objects still popping up in the far distance. Plus I got Patch for Purists and some other fixes. But no textures, no bodies, heads, faces, trees, grass, fucking improved mudcrabs or keg stands or whatever, none of that kind of faggotry.

From this OP I've installed:

- Publicans
- LDM - Context Matters
- ROHT (+ UL + LGNPC Tel Uvirith + Building Up Uvirith's Legacy)
- Expansion Delay
- What Thieves Guild
- Great Service
- Blades Informant
- Religions Elaborated (I wanted to make Temple and Imperial Cult mutually exclusive, but I didn't like all the exclusions of More Exclusive Factions)
- Hospitality Papers Expanded
- RP House Hlaalu
- Greetings for No Lore

Besides this and some other small fixes and changes, I got Tamriel Rebuilt. I also got the old mods by abot that allow you to actually watch the silt striders, ships and gondolas, which I've never tried before for some reason. It's pretty nice to see, but the ships/striders change directions rather abruptly. I doubt I'll be using this a lot, actually, but it's nice to have the option.

I have been a bit hesitant in recent years with LGNPC or any other mods that add huge amounts of dialogue, although I appreciate the ideas behind them. Although I have the RP Hlaalu mod, I think I will join Telvanni to check out the updated ROHT.

Some questions for OP or anyone else who might have suggestions about this:

- Are there any recent, recommendable mods that add some kind of NPC schedules or changes like closing shop during the night, so you can't just loot their attic/basement because they're in the same place all the time? I remember Living Cities of Vvardenfell way back in the day, although I eventually didn't include it in later builds, because it also made some NPCs difficult to find. I don't much need to have some "radiant" bullshit but it would make for an interesting change of pace, also because of the aforementioned ease of burglary.

- Economy Adjuster Adjustments: I've downloaded this, but not sure whether to install. I understand this is an edit of HotFusion's Economy Adjuster? If I understand correctly, this just makes it harder to make money from trading, and it changes crime and punishment? Or does it also affect service requirements (more refusals if you're not a high-ranking member) for guilds?

- If not, what mods currently change faction requirements (both making it harder to join, and to get services) in a way that makes it harder, but still being balanced, not going too overboard with exclusions and such?

Setting the game up like this takes about half a day, which is not bad, and I can easily go off and have some fun with the game itself. I mentioned this before, but TR and ROHT by themselves are already better and more expansive than the official Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions, which is crazy by itself.

Interested to know how the rewrite of ROHT is. I played it before that and it was super cringe.

- I too used Living Cities of Vvardenfell back in the day. Haven't seen anything new to replace it since then. I guess that not only is it difficult to make such a mod but it would also be a compatibility nightmare, what with all the town overhauls / enhancements around.

- I hear Harder Barter is the way to go these days for a good, lightweight LUA-based economy nerf. it's made by mortimermcmire, the same guy who updated ROHT. Last time I did a Vvardenfell playthrough was a few years ago, Harder Barter was not around yet and I used Hotfusion's Economy Adjuster.

- You could try Exclusive Factions by Cyran0. He also made a specific one for Redoran players called The Redoran.

Also I keep wanting to install Alternate Beginnings, but I forget about it every time, and before long I'm already doing the usual Balmora guilds run on autopilot. No bueno. Much as it would pain me to say goodbye to Todd's mercifully short tutorial (and the limeware!), it would improve replayability a lot to start in a random different location. Although there is not really any justification to ever start the main quest if your game begins in a tavern in Dagon Fel...

A similar mod I downloaded once but never really used for this purpose was CharGen Revamped, which has the alternative starts, but also gives you more control over the starting build. For me this is a bit overkill as you are not really constrained by your starting character anyway.

Now all the starter options are:

- Drinking in a tavern at Dagon Fel
- Stepping onto the docks at Ebonheart
- Being teleported into the Caldera Mages Guild
- Browsing the market as Gnisis
- Drowning in a shipwreck on the east coast
- Traveling to Seyda Neen
- Dancing in Desele's House of Earthly Delights
- Hiding from the law
- Diving for pearls near Pelagiad
- Hunting in the Grazelands
- Working in the fields
- Collecting ingredients on the Bitter Coast
- Grave Robbing in a tomb near Balmora
- Studying in the Balmora Mages Guild
- Gathering firewood in the Wilderness
- In prison at Vivec
- Shipwrecked on a beach
- Fighting a battle in the Vivec Arena
- Setting up camp near Khuul
- Working as a commoner in Maar Gan
- Excavating at some Dwemer Ruins
- Entering an Ashlander Camp
- Hunting vampires near Khuul

You have but one choice.
