The trailer from the showcase was useless but they released pretty screenshots and clips afterwards.

Oxide Games is founded by ex-Firaxis developers and made 2016 RTS (or rather, benchmark tool) Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation.

Build a nation and lead your people throughout history to the pinnacles of human achievement as you explore new lands, develop arts and culture, conduct diplomacy, and go head-to-head with your rivals to prove you are the greatest ruler ever known.
Featuring both familiar and innovative gameplay mechanics, Ara: History Untold delivers an evolution in historical grand strategy with no pre-set paths to victory, leading to endless possibilities. Your choices will define the world you create, your experience, and your legacy.

EXPLORE A LIVING WORLD

Explore a dynamic living world filled with life and charm across sweeping landscapes, ranging from tropical jungles to sand-swept deserts. Find the resources you need to develop your nation and witness it come to life through its people – each citizen has a unique story that you create and influence with your decisions. Infinite replay-ability arises from each game’s procedurally generated environment and the unique challenges it creates, so no two games will ever be the same.

RULE YOUR WAY

Take up the mantle of history’s most influential figures and reshape the world through your choices. Will you rule the Egyptians as Queen Nefertiti, the Greeks as Sappho, the United States as George Washington, or bring your own custom leader to life?

BUILD YOUR NATION

Your land is your canvas – construct a variety of buildings from forges to libraries to citadels and cathedrals, providing you with strategic bonuses and abilities. Weave a future of infinite possibilities by researching diverse technologies, each one unlocking new kinds of resources, improvements, goods and equipment.

PROVE YOUR WORTH

Grow your nation and be prepared to defend it. The fate of your people will be determined by your decisions and your ability to predict your opponent’s next move, putting your skill as a leader to the ultimate test.

I mean, fuck, the interview really says it all doesn't it? A genderblob nigger interviewing a frumpy woman and a bald cuck. You know this is going to be garbage.

My 2023 wishlist for this type of game:

1. Do not have "tee-hee, look at me, I'm so retarded" art direction in vein of nufiraxis. Looks mostly to be OK here?
2. Do not focus on brave dickgirls of color leading their mystery meat nations to glory through strong character and high iq. Let's not kid ourselves, but at least no major red flags so far.
3. Do not drop major mechanical clangers left and right in order to be original and progressive, like They/them-kind did. God only knows, but again, no alarms going off at this time.

In other words - it doesn't look bad so it's bound to suck af.

Tells fuck all if the game is realtime, turn-based, city-scale or global scale. Probably the worst fucking trailer they could put out for such a title.

Yeah, it has some elements of RTS city builder like Cities:skylines, features of CIV 5/6, battles are more similar to Total war, but on smaller scale (might be good).
Based on steam sshots it is a turn-based game, though.

Actually, it seems like battles are auto resolved with some camera replay, but no actual involvment from the player.

I don't care about culture war stuff. I've now seen meaningful gameplay footage from Civ 7 and ARA and played a couple hundred hours of Millennia.

It is pretty clear that ARA is going to be the winner of this era. Civ7 has a bunch of dogshit features while ARA has some amazing innovations.

Do I like the art style? Not really. But mechanics wise, it is superior.

My only concern would be the way the game works due to simultaneous turns. That might hamper things a bit. But I like it in Dominions so maybe not.

I thought this looked interesting, but is turned off by two things.
1. They have actually more female than male leaders for a "historical game". wouldn't have bothered me before, but now it send warnings signals.
2. cities seems to spread to cover the whole map. In reality less than 1% of the world is covered by cities.
