Rumor: Armored Core 6 details and screenshots leaked via consumer survey

Set in a world devastated by a planet-wide disaster.

First details and screenshots for a a new Armored Core game have reportedly surfaced via a consumer survey, according to a post by ResetEra user Red Liquorice.

The survey included a description, screenshots, and two short gameplay videos—one of a boss fight and one of a snowy area. The screenshots and videos were ID-watermarked, but the user was able to obscure the watermarks on the screenshots and shared them publicly.

“That’s all there was—four pages of four images,” Red Liquorice said. “The two videos I couldn’t save, no idea how even.”

The description featured in the survey is as follows:

About

Melange, an unknown substance that could dramatically advance human society. In the past, this substance caused a cosmic catastrophe on planet Bashtar that engulfed the surrounding star systems, and eventually its very existence was lost. Decades later, the Melange reaction was confirmed again on planet Bashtar. In search of the unknown substance that should have been lost, various speculations begin to swirl. Various parties are getting involved; The government, corporations, cultists, and unknown mercenaries… The protagonist is one of them.

The game is a TPS (third-person shooter) mecha action title that lets you move around an overwhelmingly scaled map that represents a unique sci-fi world with dynamic mech action. You will face strong enemies and fierce battles both long and short range using guns and blades.

Key Features

  • The Sci-Fi World Created by Hidetaka MiyazakiFromSoftware‘s unique and deep sci-fi worldview and multi-layered story. Set on the planet Bashtar, a sci-fi world devastated by a planet-wide disaster, with an overwhelming sense of scale that only mecha can provide.
  • A Vast Field that Represents a Multi-Layered World – In a massive and three-dimensional map, you can feel the scale of the mecha universe. A wide variety of maps offer an array of challenging enemies and carefully crafted situations that are worth taking on again and again.
  • Feel the Tension, in Long and Short Range Battles – This game offers not only long-range combat with guns, but also short-range combat elements such as blade and shield, that add a sense of urgency to gameplay. Decide between defensive tactics during tense and challenging battles against powerful enemies.
  • Three-Dimensional, Dynamic Action – The game’s dynamic, three-dimensional movement is something no human can imitate. You can move freely around the vast map with the unique mobility of a mech.
  • High Degree of Freedom in Customization – Reconfigure body parts and weapons in order to upgrade your mech. With a high level of customization, you can build a mech to suit your play style; from a build that focusses on close-range combat and mobility, or a build that emphasizes firepower to wipe out swarms of enemies at once.
Red Liquorice shared the following additional impressions of the footage:

The boss fight seemed very Souls in terms of speed and style. It looked like an industrial-looking brown room, the player started afar, locked on firing guns, then closed in and attacked; melee and the speed / movement all seemed very familiar Souls style. [If I recall correctly] the boss had a domed head and was bigger than the player, but not huge. If I had to guess, I’d say this was like an Asylum or Taurus Demon style early boss, obviously total speculation there, but it didn’t seem grandiose or particularly impressive as an encounter. Boss had a life bar on screen (at the top of the screen [if I recall correctly])—very simple, but it was more red LED-styled, futuristic as you might expect—angular edges on the life bars rather than straight rectangle.

The second video didn’t seem to include any combat, just moving towards this big wall or gate in the snowy area, following either other players or enemies ahead of the player, relatively small in the distance, but they had circular ‘target’ effects on them—perhaps not a target, but just identifying them other mechs. The snow reminded me of the Capcom mech game from a while back, just because of the snow.

As for the title of the game, Red Liquorice said, “The survey listed a choice of titles for the game, so I guess that hasn’t been decided on yet. Most of them were Armored Core: [Something], including just ‘Armored Core‘ and both Armored Core 6, Armored Core VI, and other subtitles I can’t remember—some of the choices didn’t include Armored Core in the name at all.”

Way back in September 2016, FromSoftware confirmed in an interview that it was working on a new Armored Core title. Two years later, company president Hidetaka Miyazaki suggested that the title was still in development, despite no official announcement.

I'd buy that.

Here's hoping it's actually happening. It would make sense for them to revive this IP now as it would be something fresh after being known for dark fantasy, sword & sorcery games for some 15 years now (probably the ONLY thing many of those on whose radars they came with Souls games know them for). Just as it would make sense that they'd try to integrate some Souls-like elements.

Dynamic, Fast-Paced Mech Action
Based on the knowledge gained during joint development of their recent titles, Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware seek to deliver a new action game. By combining FromSoftware’s longstanding expertise in mech games and their signature robust gameplay, ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON will be a new action experience.

In ARMORED CORE VI FIRES OF RUBICON, players will assemble and pilot their own mech with 3D maneuverability to move freely through three dimensional fast-paced missions. Take on difficult challenges and overwhelm your enemies with dynamic movements that make full use of ranged and melee combat. Players can enjoy a variety of actions that can only be truly realized with mechs.

Story Overview
A mysterious new substance was discovered on the remote planet, Rubicon 3. As an energy source, this substance was expected to dramatically advance humanity’s technological and communications capabilities. Instead, this substance caused a catastrophe that engulfed the planet and the surrounding stars in flames and storms, forming a Burning Star System.

Almost half a century later, the same substance resurfaced on Rubicon 3, a planet now contaminated and sealed off by the catastrophe.

Extra-terrestrial corporations and resistance groups fight over control of the substance. The player infiltrates Rubicon as an independent mercenary and finds themself in a struggle over the substance with the corporations and other factions.

Development Team
Hidetaka Miyazaki will be involved as the Initial Game Director. Based on the initial development, Masaru Yamamura has taken over as Director.

About the only thing of note from the Game Awards. No gameplay trailer yet.

Time for me to get one of these games under my belt. Open for recommendations.

Armored Core for Answer. Incredible customization/"simulation" and some of the most impressive and fun boss fights you have ever played in any game. The huge mecha fortresses are a sight to behold and White Glint is a great one on one duel, like you have on Souls games but moving at thousands Km/h.

It's gonna be great to see what they can achieve with a proper budget for the new AC. These games are very interesting and brilliant in some aspects like customization/mecha development, but it was a shame they had to cut corners heavily in some things like the environment due to budget.

Also we will able to play with proper FPS on PC!

God with us. I'm gonna preorder this hard with the most expensive edition the very instant is available, and I don't care what grognards and codex boomers say at that regard.

I tried the first one ages ago. Was ok, controls gave me PTSD but i still enjoyed the game. Curious thing i found is that the "writing" in the expansions to the PS1 game was worse than that in the first game. It's a minor quibble in a game like this but i found it curious.

Never got around playing the PS2 version, which i think is the famous one, right?

There are a bunch of ACs on the PS2 even if the numbering is weird. AC3/Last Raven is usually considered the best up to that point.

The 360/PS3 games were pretty cool though, and faster/more action-oriented. Anyone who's interested should check out 4 and For Answer.

Can someone with experience with the series describe what the game feel is like, and how is it structured?

Are we talking linear action game with hefty feeling combat? What are your expectations for this new iteration. I'm excited in being completely new to this :)

Mission based mech sims. They lean pretty heavily into customization. The gameplay has always been rather basic but generally they have a lot of weapons and other options to do a lot of heavy lifting and it's fun to make mechs that function differently. My expectations are extremely low, however. AC5 and Verdict Day, their previous AC games, were massive turds. I don't think any of the original AC staff still works for FromSoft and it's obvious based on their previous entries that they didn't really get what made them tick.
