At first I was happy about this news, then I remembered that 4th edition exists.

Let me know when somebody gets the Pathfinder license.

Let's hope that any upcoming d&d games can go back and use earlier editions, instead of having to use the atrocity that is the 4th edition.

The D&D license is probably the only thing that could save bioware's fantasy dork division from restructuring/termination but I doubt EA is willing to spend even more cash on them.

Yup, with 4E, I'll never get a ToEE style 3.5 Eberron Red Hand of Doom game v_v.

SSI, Interplay, Atari....who will be next?

Bah, it doesn't matter. Whatever they come up with now will just be 'Action RPG's' anyway. Give it to Bethesda so that further fun can be had.

Honestly, non-exclusive licensing worked well enough for Star Wars.

Good news but I bet whoever gets the license next will do worse than Atari.
    :/

  16. Probably wouldn't be bad if EA got it. Then Bioware could start cranking out D&D games, which I originally thought would be a good thing since Bioware cannot into gameplay and then I remembered 4th edition.

Now I just don't know what to think. Plus I guess the last Bioware D&D game was NWN which was an absolute piece of shit EXCEPT for how it implemented 3rd ed and the toolset, so that's not a terribly high bar.

    God damn it Bioware.

perhaps this is a sign from the gods that Baldur's Gate 3 should be made by Bioware now, at the zenith of their commercial might

    with modern improvements of course

Who cares. Not only 4e is WoW offline, but any reasonably large company having a D&D license would only keep a logo from it, replacing the rest with God of War ripoff gameplay.

That said, anything that brings closer the day RPG genre is utterly forgotten and joins wargames and point and click adventures in limbo is good news.

The money involved will have to be tempting to EA. At the same time I have a feeling they would really want a great deal of the license and others would offer Hasbro more. I could see THQ or some other middle-ground publisher getting all excited and thinking D&D could put them more on the map.

Why? It was shit. Maybe better than 4th for what thats worth.

How? Atari wasnt even trying. Daggerfail and facebook games is as low as it gets. Square Enix could do better.

    ... What?

LucasArts holds the Star Wars License, even the KotoR MMO still have LucasArts as publisher.

Sort of what I meant. Note how LA's internal studios wound up doing like...4 Star Wars games (the first 2 Dark Forces games+Force Unleashed games), but they went and allowed a shit load of companies to dev for them.
