Avernum doesn't have any meaningful C&C. The only choices are about what to explore and which towns to visit first or later. Additionally, you can choose which branch of the main quest to follow.

Apparently, Geneforge has a bit more C&C, but given Avernum's (virtually non-existent) low standards, 'a bit more' might still mean 'almost zero'. And I can somewhat confirm that, because after several hours I dropped it as it seemed to be nothing more than exploration and combat. Which, to be clear, I don’t mind, exploration and combat are fine things, but they just weren’t enough to keep me going.

Geneforge. Basically, you are introduced to a few factions and can decide which one (if any) to side with in the conflict. You can also solve problems via a few different avenues, usually by fighting, sneaking/traps, or talking (or some combination of all three). It's also his best series by far and one of the best crpg series, too.
