Due to the design constraints of a fully voiced MMO of this scale and size, many choices had to be made as to the launch and post-launch feature set. Same gender romances with companion characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic will be a post-launch feature. Because The Old Republic is an MMO, the game will live on through content expansions which allow us to include content and features that could not be included at launch, including the addition of more companion characters who will have additional romance options.

it all depends on why you play to begin with and what relationship you have with your toon.
if you're one of the people thinking the toon is "the awesome you" in your dream universe that life was unjust enough to prevent you from getting born in, that's already fucking low and some npc romance is not going to change that.
if you're one of the people for whom the toon is just part of the interface, same gender romance just adds some lulz that makes the grindy boring parts more endurable.

plus there's the lulz from the "i'm no homophobe, i just don't want to have to see any hint whatsoever of icky gay stuff in the game" tards over in the official thread.
