The Minsc joke probably caused more rage from the GamerGate camp overall. The Tranny was just icing on the cake, and taken alone probably wouldn't have caused much more than a shake of the head.

I don't think so. I mean, I'm all for GamerGate, and I still find the inclusion of a transexual in a world where their plight would be very easily solvable to be disrespectful to the source material, much more than a silly (unfunny) aGG joke.

So it alienates fans (and most of those are probably indifferent to GG) because of the following:

1) It's completely out of place in the setting. Like it was already mentioned, this could have been easily solved by making it into an interesting little side-quest: "Please bring me a girdle of femininity."

2) Dreadful writing. Even if you are a staunch believer in diversity, you can't deny that this was written amateurishly, and in-your-face.

3) You get no chance to react to it. It's either: "Oh, I see, how interesting.", or "Ok. Well, goodbye.", which is totally jarring, because you don't even get the chance to be a sarcastic idiot or evil character, something which you can do in most other situations.

Maybe. Judging by KIA a lot of people focus on the Minsc joke, others are more pissed by the tranny.

I still think the Minsc joke, in addition to the comments made by Amber Scott on Kotaku and other places, probably pissed off more GG people than the tranny alone.

Even though I don't particularly like BG1 and 2, I know that they have very rabid fanbase, and when the writer decided to shit on BG1, and that combined with the very high expectations brought by the two first games, Beamdog sealed their fate IMO. Every step of the way has went from bad to worse. Instead of weathering the downpour, they all grabbed the nearest long, metal, electrically conducting object and ran into the shit storm swinging wildly.

I've played it (up to a certain point), but I couldn't force myself to finish it.

And no, it's not because of all the SJW crap (though that certainly didn't help). It's just that it's so bland, so uninteresting. Yes, I usually play these games more for the story and role-play than the combat, and while I've seen some ok encounters, it's still nothing compared to BG2.

So what we got was a mediocre buggy game, with poor writing, irritating NPCs (only the skald one was ok), and railroaded even more than ToB.

I wouldn't call it "utter shit", but it's still much, much worse than BG1, and that's coming from someone who's played a lot of BG (both parts, with and without mods), but doesn't consider them the bestest RPGs evah.

Maybe the game is better than PoE, maybe it isn't. I heard it's a buggy mess that breaks mod support and has tons of trash mob encounters comparable to PoE. The point is I will never know which is better because as you said.. I'll be damned if I am gonna throw down 20 bucks to buy a pandering shit show game like this.

So to say the game is good on it's own merits will never be tested because the only people playing it are hard stop fanboys.

When Delterius finishes the review we can all find out together.

Part I of my Siege of Dragonspear walkthrough is up. It just covers the "interlude": The House of the Dead & The Catacombs.

I found the "interlude" a lil' uninspiring even compared to Chateau Irenicus: the narrative was skeletal, the writing was poor, and there was not much atmosphere and ambience. However, the combat encounters show promise despite being quite benign at this early stage. I suspect all aspects of the campaign will improve (especially the combat), so I'm certainly not writing the campaign off at this juncture. I'm looking forward to seeing how things pick up, and to what extent.

I won't cast "White Slaves and Innuit Slaves" because of REPRESENTATION, I have to stick with the story and the setting.
Representation shouldn't even exist as an issue, by itself it undermines the approach that should be at the base of the creative process.
