I don't get why so many people care about romances so much. It is completely dissociated from the gameplay almost every single case. There are few exceptions like Mount & Blade, where marrying gives right to rule, affects the relationship with your wive's family and her kingdom/town among other things. Other example is Heather Poe which affects a bit the late parts of the game, but she is more like a blood doll/slave/ghoul than a proper romance option.

Would be interesting if for example in a Ravenloft : Strahd possession, romancing the obcession of Stahd, Tatyana had terrible consequences in the game, with Strahd becoming completely furious, or if sleeping with a succubus could gradually make you enslaved by her and she will demand something atrocious and more sex you had with her makes more difficulty to break her domination spell.

But to answer your first question and I can only speak on behalf of myself. Romance is not that important, its just an aspect of party interaction and companion side quests. These mechanics are more important than Romance but Romance adds additional levels of realism and RP entertainment

About the only kind of romance I'd say I liked was Nameless One and Fall-From-Grace. It's not in your face, it doesn't have sex or kissing scenes. It just goes by slowly and you can even miss it. But the ending of the game perfectly showcases it in the form of the following exchange:

Nope. No romances, you create 2 characters with a Tarot style character creation screen and can recruit more two. You will gonna suffer a bit with controls but thrust me. Worth. The game is amazing. If you wanna start with Stone prophet or import a save from Strahd possession, I suggest creating at least an pure magic and a cleric. There are no pure mage companions in the 2nd game and if you multiclass, you will not gonna see 6th tier spells and believe on me, TRUE seeing, disintegrate and DEATH spell(circle of death in 3e) are amazing spells and will gonna save your life multiple times. Also, jump/fly is vital in the second game and not needing to use potions for it is great. Clerics are must have in both games, high tier undeads are as nasty as they where in 2E. They will inflict negative levels(if you don't have protection from negative plane) and turn undead is a must have in the castle, crypt and other areas.

PAladins are also quite great. IF you look into walktroughts to pass certain parts with hidden buttons, 90%+ will be playing as a Paladin.

I used to DM in AD&D for 12 years and Ravenloft, Greyhawk and FR were my favorite game worlds

But Ravenloft was great with the whole Gothic horror theme. Quest for Glory 4 reminds me of that type of design

Because the idea of romancing a hot girl has certain allure to it? And in a genre that's focused on relationships (party relationships in particular) romance is bound to focus a lot of interest? Especially in a single-player cRPG? That is focused around player's choices? The real issue is not the existence of romances as such, but how they are handled - it's better not to have them than have them done poorly.

Barovia is Gothic horror. There are many Dark Lords, each one with his realm of dread where they are rulers and cursed prisoners at the same time... The second game, Stone prophet is set in a Egypt like desert known as Har'Akir. And the Dark Lord, instead of an ancient vampire necromancer, is a mummy cleric.

I will not spoil much but instead of a obsession with a woman, his obsession is with Eternal life and he got it in a very twisted way.

I just don't get why Woketards decided to outright IGNORE 99% of good D&D settings from 2E and their iconic 3E Eberron and focus only in Sword Coast... But considering how modern RPG are, maybe this is a good thing. I mean, imagine lv 4 Zulkir's with 666 hp in a Baldur's Gate 3 game set in Thay(is Faerun but is a less cliche part of Faerun). Imagine all "problematization" from SJW's if a true Dark Sun crpg comes... I remember when I watched a stream of Dark Sun in 5E, pronouns in character sheet, a lv 1 wizard killing templars and spamming firebolt left and right(note : magic is HATED in athas, you need to be cautious when casting spells), they invented a democratic progrssive city in Athas ruled by a dwarf woman and they got a "sandship" at lv 1.
