I don't understand. How (and why) is Black Isle still a thing? Did they bring it back from the dead for THIS?

It's just some dude on Twitter. No actual studio exists. It's a licensing operation, contracting out rereleases and remakes to various no-name developers under the Interplay/Black Isle brand.

It's still sad that they're allowed to use Black Isle's name and logo through their "official" social media pages. Icewind Dale, Torment, and Fallout are sacred games, and nobody should be allowed to impersonate the studio behind them like that.

Steam's remote play is just streaming, so that's not an impressive online solution at all. It's literally the cheapest solution offered.

I'd say this is mildly exciting news.

Dark Alliance isn't a fantastic game, but it's solid enough that I'd take another look at it on PC.

I would be more interested in the other games made with that engine though (Dark Alliance 2, Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms).

I have no high hopes for Champions though, since it is linked to the Everquest IP. Those games came out at a very weird time where Sony tried to expand the IP into all kinds of different directions. You had action figures, novels, there was Everquest Online Adventures on the PS2 and Lords of Everquest, which was basically a Warcraft III clone. Everything around 2003, including Champions.

Never really worked out so well - still an interesting little package to accompany the mainline games.

Very quick review from someone here. Sounds like it's an ok port aside from a sound bug that forces you to restart the game (I assume this was console) and the fact they haven't added online co-op (so you'll need to hire an escort to play with you). The reviewer spends a lot of time complaining about the price/release strategy and doesn't seem to understand it's not directly related to the new game.

I'd argue someone should make new fucking games with the DnD license instead of regurgitating old mediocre shit... But that just leads to even worse games like BG3. Truly these are the end times of gaming.

I'd like for the D&D license to be kept in a vault somewhere very dangerous and subterranean where there will be many boulder traps and snake pit rooms. Maybe a falling ceiling if the budget allows for it. Oh and a bunch of stone masks that spit out poisonous darts if you do something wrong.

If a developer can get to it, they deserve it. Swen will be the first test subject brave adventurer.

If they can't play through Tomb of Horror blind they don't deserve the IP.
(None of that 5E shit Tomb of Horror either!)

Champions of Norrath was better.

Yeah, I wish they re-released that instead, because that game has some serious slowdown issues in certain places on PS2. That fucking frost spell enemies cast in dungeons sent the fps into single digits. Also, that game and it's sequel (Champions: Return to Arms) have more classes to choose and random loot.

Does this game have any redeeming qualities?

It has a quality villain you really feel sorry for in the end.

What about Solasta tho?

I have no doubt that Swen would pass any trail, you can hate on Larian overall all you want, but Swen really has a passion for RPGs and his autism will know no boundaries.
