I gave them some leniency on that one because for me it's Character Development > Combat. But then it occurred to me a lot of people may have voted for Character Development because they thought it meant the development of your character's personality or some shit like that
You'd be surprised at how many people think that "character development" means learning more about your character's personality throughout the game. Apparently, according to such prestigious sites such as Rock Paper Shotgun, Mass Effect and The Witcher are fantastic RPGs because they have strong character development, while Wizardry is merely a spreadsheet.

Eh, I dunno, all most lots of rpgs have shit combat, including the ones belonging to the Codex holy trinity. And considering the trinity, seems like a codexian poll wouldn't give much different results. Does anyone here like Arcanum or PST's combat?
You're right, and I mentioned that. But you have to realise just how shit NPC interaction is. Choosing one out of four developer crafted dialogue options is akin to being given four developer crafted combat options, with each one leading to absolute success or absolute failure. Dialogue systems are plain shit compared to even the worst combat systems.

What, it doesn't have QTE's already? Skyrim confirmed for dated mechanics.
You can't blame the fans, those that liked the RPG part of the Elder Scrolls have probably been driven to suicide, or to the Codex, either way. Today all that is left are people who wanted God of War or Mass Effect 2 to have a dragon.

The transformation is almost complete. Soon, the fans will clamor that Fallout 4 become an over the shoulder 3rd person popamole shooter, with strong character development of course.

As much as I loved Bane of the Cosmic Forge, I don't think calling character development in Wizardry a spreadsheet is too far from the mark.
Character development can mean two things. In fiction it means the character develops his personality, in CRPGs it traditionally meant getting better stats.
Mass Effect obvisously is closer to a movie than to traditional CRPGs, with romances and cinematic cutscenes that makes the characters develop their personality.

Is there some kind of lurid history there? The only thing I know about is some Codexers making a refugee thread at the Watch when the Codex was down for a while and a couple of Codexers (Melcar, Crispy, oldmanpaco, etc.) that also post over there.
RPGWatch is probably the worst site dedicated to RPGs. Evidence of this can be found in their "Polls & Comments" sub-forum.

Their polls are open to unregistered voters. So, if any fansite gets wind of any poll there, you see sudden jumps in votes, which explains the vote for Hellgate London. You can usually look up in the thread how the cleaned-up vote looks like, which is often different. In case of this one, you get the following result by removing robo-votes:

Mass Effect - 38 votes
The Witcher - 620 votes
Two Worlds - 7 vote
Hellgate: London - 7 votes
NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer - 82 votes
Eschalon: Book 1 - 153 votes

So, Witcher first, Eschalon: Book 1 second, MotB 3rd. Hellgate last (together with Two Worlds).

By the way, only 58 votes came from registered members, so that vote looks different again:

Mass Effect - 4 votes
The Witcher - 42 votes
Two Worlds - 1 vote
Hellgate: London - 0 votes
NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer - 4 votes
Eschalon: Book 1 - 6 votes

Similar result, but not a single vote for Hellgate London.

Not really, and not by Codex standards. On the above ye're on ye're own mate.

I would have paid $5000 to get Skyrim made - i.e. a sequel to Oblivion that builds on that game, which is one of my personal favorite games over the past 30 years (perhaps lagging behind only Ultima 7, Star Control 2 and Freespace 2).

....but I still can't pull the trigger on the collectors' edition, as I really don't want to support $150 for that unspecial edition. I'll probably buy 4-5 copies of Skyrim to give to friends though.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Another shitty borderhouse post:

http://borderhouseblog.com/?p=6532

I watched the video of that scene and... yeah.

"Dear Penthouse,

I never thought this would happen to me. I was playing this shitty game the other day..."

I particularly like how the first person to comment, after coming off fairly reasonable, then turns to the derp side to bitch about sarcastic image descriptions because they discriminate against blind people.

:rage: Goddamn shitheads. I thought they at least voted for a cool setting, but naturally they just voted for the Witcher shit.

Even if this is a case of being less bad then another in your eyes, fuck yeah. Mask of the Betrayer needs more love.

Oh god. No, it really doesn't. MoTB's claim to fame is pretty much that it's an RPG released in the last 10 years.
Exactly. Which is why it's a better RPG than The Witcher, a game that's arguably not even an RPG.

i guess in another engine you could instead of buffing the gnolls just place companies of them. altough that could be a problem if you need to watch the turn of every single enemy.

or you know, exchange the gnolls for something less stupid.

like another 3-5 lower level mages(whose ai doesn't suck). or golems. or demons/devils. or elementals.

or one of the other 5 millionen high level enemies in the mosnter manual.

fuck i hate gnolls.

edit: ok no, i take that back. i hate unimaginative and nonsensical bloating of hp and attack damage. gnolls are alright enemies in low level/mid level campaigns.

at least better than orcs or ogres.
