My favourite part was how they spoiled the twist in Bioshock, I thought that was a nice touch. More people need to do that in lists that will probably get people to play games.

And I am very butthurt that KoTOR1 made it over KoTOR2

Everything I have read or heard about Skyrim sounds really cool but my past experience with Oblivion makes me really weary about picking it up.

I've bought and returned Oblivion twice. Each time I would give it a try I would start from the beginning, get kind of lost in the character creator making guesses as to what would work best, I would close the first demon gate, get to the major town, then have absolutely no clue what to do or where to go. For me the game was too open with too many ways to go about things. I never had a clear picture of what my overall goal was or where I should go. I also hated the combat but maybe that was because I just didn't understand it. I had a better time with Fallout 3. I liked the combat more and the main story was easier to follow if you didn't murder everyone before talking to them, I made that mistake once. I didn't like the subway system since I constantly got lost in there. Fallout: New Vegas was my most enjoyable time with an "open world" type of game. The main objective was easy to follow but if I wanted to explore I had the option too, but it wasn't required.

So where does Skyrim fall? Is it super open world/sandbox or more structured like New Vegas? On a side note, I really like Dark Souls. I enjoy the combat, exploration, and, with the help of a strategy guide, I don't get lost too often.

It sounds like Elder Scrolls just isn't for you. The same reason you prefer Fallout over TES, is the reason I prefer TES over Fallout. Elder Scrolls is a big open experience where you can play whatever type of character you want, whereas Fallout is a much more guided experience, with a focus on story, that just happens to be set in an open world.

Skyrims combat very differnnt from oblivion in some way like you r able to duel wiled two weapons witch is cool and the biggest improvment and best i think is the eradication of the class system and you level up in a simelar way to fallout 3 but you level up every thisg sepretly and every thing goes towards your over all level. so i would say cheack it out and if you arnt up for buying it you can rent it.

While a lot of their design decisions seem to be directly bridged from Fallout 3, I get the feeling it's going to be more open-world than New Vegas. Every Elder Scrolls game basically tells you where the main quest is, but it doesn't underline it a lot, which I imagine can be confusing for people who want to follow it straight out of the gate. It's hard to tell what they'll do with Skyrim, though. Maybe they learned from feedback they got from Oblivion and lay things out a bit better for people who want to follow the main quest. I've played most of the major ES games, except Oblivion, but only finished one of them. The rest I mostly wandered through. They seem to be much better at telling you what main quest stuff is than they used to be; maybe knowing what you know now about how it's not as clear might help make you keep an eye out for where the journal entries and other narrative clues tell you to go (if this even has a journal, I don't know).

Yes. Just like how X-COM: Ufo Defense had too many confusing options at the beginning. What a modern game needs is direction and focus: a corridor, if you will.

After the complex portrayal of BioShock 2's brute splicer, I am eager to see if Thomas and the team at 2K Marin can have lightning strike twice with a depiction of homosexuality that may hit closer to home for many gamers. Pelling: Our view was to give you the central character and the two agents, as your right and left hand. They’re kind of; you almost equip your agents with… they themselves are equipped with various technologies and tactical capabilities, so what we want from the combat is to make it very, y’know, tactical but also not overwhelming in terms of its complexity. We don’t want players to micromanage the combat, so we want the agents individually to be really strong tools. RPS: As you say, they’re class-based; are there multiple individuals of each class? Jordan was talking about how they could get injured and hence not be available for a mission.

Pelling: You played the original? So you’d be totally familiar with how you could recruit dudes; they each come with their own stats and be complete individuals in their own right. We have a similar system; it’s not as heavily stat-based as it was, it’s more power-based.

It just seems a shame to leave such a great franchise to wither and die, when we can bring it into a modern era, tweak it a bit, and make it a great title for both fans, and newcomers.

Obviously, we’d like everyone to enjoy the game, but if it came down to numbers, I’d say the intended audience is probably 70% fans, and 30% newcomers. But, anyone should be able to pick up and enjoy the game.

No, we’re definitely not competing with it, and if you see what we’ve done, you’ll agree. The new graphics engine is a huge leap forward; combined with our translation of turn-based to “Plan & Go” play really modernizes the game. That said, we don’t want to alienate the fans, so there’s a lot of stuff in the game they’ll recognize, including the gameplay in general, the missions, the mercs, the guns,etc.
Does the move to 3D add anything to the gameplay? Will players be able to rotate the environment to get a look at things from different perspectives or is the camera locked down?
It definitely boosts the tactical gameplay. Going from 2D sprites to 3D lets you do all sorts of great stuff with the camera. So, you’ll be able to rotate the camera, pan, tilt, zoom, etc – all of which are handy for getting a better view on that blind corner your sniper is about to slip around (and discover a guard waiting for him).
Rebuilding Arulco in 3D turned out to be very time consuming. Our Arulco is much more detailed than the original and since the technology that brings the game to live is more complex than the originals tile based system a lot of time went into the level design.

In general we were not able to copy much from the original game but had to re-design almost everything based on the feel of the original.

"So we constantly look at ways to grow the recent category of titles like Burnout, Need for Speed, Road Rash are constantly things we think about. It's the same thing with the old Bullfrog IPs like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Powermonger, Magic Carpet, I can go on. So we do look at that stuff and are very cognisant of our past.

"The key thing for us is, if we do bring [any of those] back, the game has got to be good. I don't know about you but when I look back at GoldenEye, I think of it as this amazing game and the you go and play it and are like, 'Oh. Really?'. From our perspective we have to manage that element which makes things look nicer in the rear view mirror compared to what you have to do now in the modern day.

As Japanese gamers lost interest in console games, production dipped. At the same time, market forces prompted western PC heavy hitting developers to change their focus to consoles. Suddenly the console market was dominated by the west, and Japanese audiences have never liked western games. There's an old Japanese gaming proverb, yo-ge kuso-ge: literally, "western games are shit."

While Japanese arcades were blowing up in the '80s and the machines were becoming popular in America, a burgeoning home gaming market appeared on Japanese PCs. This period in the early '80s marks the only time where PC gaming was a force to consider in the Japanese gaming scene. Prior to the appearance of the Famicom in 1983, Japanese role-playing games were getting their start on these machines. Designers would liberally borrow from the Wizardry and Ultima series in their games. Wizardry in particular remains a cult favorite series in Japan, and the recent iterations of the franchise have only been released in Japan.

After this early era western games fell by the wayside. The rise of console gaming prevented Japanese gamers from seeing the best titles the rest of the world was buzzing about, and Japanese games developed in their own isolated ecosystem with Japanese publishers treating their popularity in the rest of the world as a bonus.

Without PC games Japanese gamers were only exposed to western console games, which were by and large inferior to their Japanese competitors. Given the skewed sample size, the conclusion was obvious: Western games were universally terrible, and the phrase "western games are shit," became self-evident.

While there's a small group of hardcore gamers who import the latest titles from America, and designers like Suda 51 have acted as champions of foreign games, there are still many gamers and members of the industry who still cling to their old beliefs. Though to be honest, following Valkyria Chronicles I'm going to believe the Nips have declined far less, especially knowing how popular a real turn-based tactical squad game was in Japan (while in the West Yahtzee bashes it without actually playing it past the starting levels and deducting the rest).

EDIT: But then again, we have MCA. And now we have MCA with Tim Cain!

Yeah, no. Former EA Support Rep here. They hand those out like crazy and half of the time they're actually broken. I believe at one point they were broken for several months.

Boy, I could tell you some stories but I guarantee you wouldn't want to play EA games again.
I'm not sure how much I can tell without giving myself away to any EA employees. I was there for several years and I know some stuff and have seen some shit.

Well, for starters, there are way better coupons than 15%, even if you live in the UK.

If you speak with a supervisor, they will never act on anything you tell them. The agent could have literally told you to suck his dick. The support agents are paid less than most fast food employees. It isn't their fault, really, aside from the fact that they aren't trained correctly and they aren't given an incentive to work harder. Higher tiered agents many not know what the fuck they're doing since they will simply "promote" agents for statistics which mean nothing. Coupons and free stuff are simply a way to get you to stop complaining.

Known issues aren't forwarded to the support staff. On the other side of the coin, it is rare for call driver issues to be forwarded to the developers. There are issues in BFBC2 that most senior agents know about but the developers do not. For example, don't change the email on your account to an email that was once used by another account. It breaks the stats for BFBC2 80% of the time.

Also, The Sims 3 is fucked. Great game, great idea, horrible patching. This is by design so they can sell you the fix in the next expansion.

EDIT : I have some more but I need two beers. One for myself, one in memory of the agent who KILLED himself over the working conditions there. No, I'm not joking.
Mythic had a huge billing issue a while ago. Anyone who played Dark Age of Camelot or Warhammer will know this. Pretty much every subscriber was charged 5-20 times in one sitting. One person had their electricity shut off because their auto-pay couldn't fulfill the transaction, since we emptied their account. Someone in that house was on a breathing apparatus. The people hadn't properly informed the electricity company of the situation. The person on the apparatus died. I talked to the person who was taking care of them.. It wasn't a good day. I cried when I got home. I cried a lot.
I believe it was settled out of court in a very discreet manner. There was never a word in the news about it. Hell, there was barely any news about the Mythic billing fiasco. EA makes sure it's really bad news is swept under the rug.
Plenty. Skate 3 had one of the best online concepts ever but it has never properly worked for the majority of EA customers. Most people don't seem to care/notice but there were folks who had to wait for 3 months for their online pass to be properly activated after they entered it. The studio wouldn't fix it.

Madden is the worse offender. The head of the Madden team is a huge jackass and hates customers. Some customer posted on the guys' personal Twitter about his account issues. He then had that customer banned. Don't piss off ANYONE from an EA studio as they will be able to have you banned without a proper investigation. You have no recourse.
I know EA people read Reddit. A LOT of EA people read Reddit. There is enough information in my account to figure out who I am. They could find my account and disable it for what I've posted already. I would have no recourse. Not like I play any EA games anyway. I've decided to not play BF3, even though I had it preloaded onto my account.
Well, let's see.. Intelligent agents who develop fixes and write documentation for those fixes? Yeah, they are manipulated into a position and then kept there. I knew one bright kid who had been there for about 3 years. He wrote and distributed about 700 fixes. He trained agents that needed the help. He moved not too long after I left. That kid was manipulated by his superiors pretty much the entire time he was working there. He accepted low pay, was passed over for promotions, and was told to do work normally done by a much higher level employee.

Also, I can't tell you too much but the working conditions for Bioware programmers are shit. They pretty much chew through programmers and then fire them/demote them.

Mythic doesn't care about you. Period. They changed their handling policies pretty much every week to discourage scammers/phishers. I'll be honest, Mythic fucking hates you. I've never met a nice person from their division.

EDIT : Also, the supervisors regularly make fun of a guy who is in a wheelchair pretty much all the time. He just grins and bears it, I think.. Poor guy.
Any chance you'd care to elaborate on The Sims? As a player, I've known for a while that they're fucked, and I'm a paranoid bitch so I tend to assume it's intentional rather than accidental, but facts make me feel important.
Okay, whenever the major patches would come out, they would generally break things. Like when World Adventures came out, I'm sure you found some issues with Egypt. First, most of those issues? Yeah, still present in the game. Second, most of those were fixed with the next expansion when their patches failed. Eventually, they stopped issuing in-depth patches to resolve issues and instead began pumping new items and features into the game with each patch. Any issues that came up were fixed with the next expansion release. Now, you did get the patch whether or not you bought the expansion but I can guarantee you that the people who bought the expansion had a better shot of having those issues fixed. I've seen the numbers. It started off as an accidental thing but it's now just the way they handle business.

Also, Sims issues are never sent up to be handled properly. The best answer you will receive from upper level support with a major game stopping issues is to do this :

Manual uninstall game Wipe all save data and custom content Reinstall

Most of the time this will work since most of the issues the game causes will affect the save game file. I had to tell someone to delete their game of like 16 generations because of this.
I would never buy an EA game again. I have received B3 for free on my Origin account and I won't even install it. I simply dislike EA to such a point that I will turn down a free AAA title.

EDIT : Yes, this means I won't be playing SWTOR. I have no faith in the account system they are using.
The FIFA series has an ongoing "glitch" that allows you to control an opponents team in multiplayer. This glitch has been in the past three FIFA games and is known about to the developers. They don't care.

If you play Madden for it's card collecting fantasy football bullshit, please note that if your account suddenly loses all of it's cards and coins and you weren't hacked, you still aren't getting it back. All that content you paid for? You won't get it back. You won't get an apology, either.
I still remember when we told the FIFA guys to google the glitch (this was when FIFA 11 was released) and you could hear how strained the silence was when they realized it was still in the game.
Generally, it's a very negative atmosphere. I've worked in a fastfood shack called Shortstop and it was was more enjoyable than EA. You get berated for everything you do, including if your average call time is above 20 minutes. The kid who killed himself was already pretty sad and had some emotional issues, to be perfectly honest, but the bosses knew this but didn't take any special measures to specifically approach issues with the agent in a proper manner. It was sort of the last needle in the haystack, which was sad because he was a cool guy.
