Except hitting the retreat button is very fast, so you're not losing much.
Yes, but retreating too early may open you to a grenade, because you retreat in a straight line.

And yet, I can think of no other RTS which has a problem of similar magnitude.
That's true. This is because of how damage is handled: more models with few HPs between them are more prone to getting grenaded out of existence. Space Marines don't have that problem. Until they retreat while very low on health.

DoW 2 MP is a Moba at heart. It has lanes, small units, strong heroes and abilities, so you need to be excellent at micro to enjoy it. If you lose the initial engagement, you will have a very hard time trying to get back into the game. Macro is nothing, Micro is everything.

Nah. DoW2 is an RTS without base-building portion of it. Everything else what can be said about it, can be said about most RTSes.

Dawn of War and maybe Dark Crusade, add the good number of mods out there and you'll have more w40k than you can play.

I never liked the retreat button/mechanic in DoW2, nor the extreme back and forth gameplay that it introduced. You are in a tricky situation? Just press the panic button. It worked in CoH where units regularly got killed even if you tried to retreat, and where you had only ranged units, but I didn't like it at all in DoW2, where you have mix of melee and range. And yes, I know that retreating enemies took more damage from melee and some other damage types. But I found it rarely worth to trying to setup fleeing enemies in a 1-on-1, where you have fairly limited number of units that are better of doing something else. DoW2 with the elite mod in 3-on-3 is ok, but all things considered I'd still rather play DoW1, especially in single player campaigns and skirmish.

As an epic scale tabletop player back in the '90s, I can say that Final Liberation is the closest 40k vidya game to the tabletop experience. The game is older than dirt though.

I really enjoyed Battlefleet Gothic 2 despite not liking the first game. BFG 2 drew a lot of hate for the grindy campaign, but the QoL was better than than BFG 1. You can actually pause and issue orders in Battlefleet Gothic 2, which is essential in large fleets. Skalgrim mod is worth checking out.
intereesting, good to know..I raged quit and refunded Battlefleet Gothic 1 because I could not pause to give orders and then never looked at the 2nd one because of that, but now I might give it a try

Yeah, I tried to play through the campaign of BFG 1 three times and gave up in frustration. The lack of pause orders forced me into really boring and conservative tactics. For example, using light cruiser wolfpack tactics was out of the question because the micromanagement was too intensive.

BFG 2 has granular campaign settings:

Don't like shitty escort missions? Turn them off. Want 200% fleet sizes? No problem. It's better on every level than BFG 1 other than the story. BFG 1 was much better at presenting the 40k universe. In contrast, BFG 2 has Inquisitor Dickhammer who's a Saturday morning kids cartoon villan.

I'd vote for Rites of War

all iit tells is that devs were too lazy/incompetent to design a good campaign

Not as remotely lazy as your pointless reply.

If card games count The Horus Heresy is definitely up there. I've spent an ungodly amount of time on this one, got most of what I wanted, and haven't spend a dime on it. Don't sleep on the Imperial Army. I am Cicero Augustus on that game if any of you want to play.

If tactics RPGs count Mechanicus is the one. Its sole flaw is the difficulty. Play the game on the hardest or near hardest settings. But it's a gem otherwise.

Ground Control and World in Conflict come to my mind when it comes to RTS without base-building that have none of the Issues DoW 2 has. CoH 2 has limited basebuilding depending on the faction and has some of the same issues, but not nearly as bad.

Horus Heresy Legions is actually decent. Impressive for the sheer number of Warlords from the heresy era, that all play rather differently. Has some balancing issues and the devs just announced card rotation, so im not sure what the future holds.
Cant really say its easy to get the cards you want now though, as there is a absolute fuckton of it and no duplicate protection. Played for about 4 months and only really got three decks to the point Id where I'd say they are competitive.

The tutorial for Mechanicus is a better D&D game than most of the titles released since 2nd Edition

I will drop it here, seems due to SEGA current financial situation they are looking to make some cash and what would be the easiest way but remaster? Hence we might see DOW remaster/soft reboot.

A Kill Team video game would be good. Not the shmup Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team, but an actual video game based on the board game. XCOM clone with WH40k units instead of humans would be great. Mechanicus was reasonably successful, as far as I know. A full-budget version with all the races instead of just Necrons vs Admech would be pretty sick

Well, The new Demon Gate sort of does do that, but its not perfect and becomes a bit repetitive.
