Well, Bloodstained had almost no gameplay/sceenshots and it became the second most funded game on Kickstarter :M

That was during the stage where any game with a big name attached to it could get 2m, people aren't throwing their money around like they used to.

Nah, Bloodstained was later than that stage. It was less than a year ago. Kickstarter's "anybody can get hundreds of thousands of dollars" boom was back in 2012-2013.

The reason Bloodstained got lots of money is because the market for revivals of classic Japanese console gaming properties is (or was) large and relatively untapped. Western shooter fans are a more hard-to-please bunch.

This. It's a shooter people. The market is overflowing with wild variety and quantity of shooters as it is, it takes something more than big name involvment to make people throw money at the project.

Kickstarter is definitely harder to please than in 1-2 years of post-Double Fine Adventure era, but that's not why Blackroom bombed. It bombed because the pitch is shit, simple as that.

Shit shooters that are unfortunately selling like hotcakes right now. Hopefully a demo will help convince people to back but they are going to need a hell of a media campaign to get any good amount of money aside from the minimum.

Kickstarter moves by sentiment and emotion not reason, they didn't need a demo just a cool and slick pitch that grabbed the audience feels. You need to capture the feels of your audience as most people won't be pumped for what you are doing if you don't show yourself pumped and excited for it, after all, if you don't care, why they should? Romero seemed not all that pumped and invested and the campaign looked alot like they trying to fill checkboxes instead, he didn't show enthusiasm, humor or any proof of being engaged on what he was doing, I blame he trying to talk from a script(at least that was what it looked like) instead of talking directly. Look to this video here:


Romero, talk about your legacy, your failures, today shooter market, how you are relevant, just talk with your fans again, don't need fancy stuff, just straight talking.

That have about as much common with Doom and Quake as Brotherhood of Steel has with the original Fallout. Just because Romero failed doesn't mean there's isn't an untapped niche market for 90s style FPS.

It bombed because the pitch is shit, simple as that.

This is the crux of the matter. It was a horrid pitch, no emotion, no play on Romero being an eccentric creative genius, no new freaky monster/environment design art from Adrian Carmack, no waxing about the glory days of the 90s etc. Romero looked like he received a subpoena and was told to be respectable for his court hearing.

Romero should reach out to Fargo for private lessons, maybe he'll stand a chance then.

What happened to this? It just died and they moved forward?
Nothing's been officially announced, but it seems like there might be a publisher involved.

Eurogamer hosted a Q&A panel with Romero at the Digital Dragon's conference last April, which is the last time the game was mentioned publicly.

"Well interestingly we cannot talk about Blackroom," John Romero said to me. "At some point in the future I definitely will but I can't say anything about it right now." It sounds hopeful - perhaps a publisher is involved.
