It was turn based. Game was 1st person perspective but in combat it would change towards 3rd person isometric, effectively turn based.

Star Trail also was IIRC the first 1st person RPG that would let you choose between 90º degrees turning (like Eye of Beholder) and full 360º play (like Ultima Underworld etc)
