A more likely outcome is that adventure game Kickstarters will die off, but RPG Kickstarters will live on. But I'm not sure if even that will happen.

Because of Double Fine alone? Hell no, not a chance. But Schaefer carried a big responsibility as flagship captain, and Kickstarter is in much more treachourous waters now, meaning even more responsibility lies with Fargo and co. now.

True to that. And many major projects we count (P:E and Torment) on are nowhere near completion. Hell, we really do not know how Wasteland 2 will turn out. Sure gameplay vids look promising... but so were the vids of Chaos Chronicles.

http://kotaku.com/5940450/want-to-bring-your-indie-game-to-pax-thatll-be-1175870

Barebones cost seem a bit lower - $32k or so for the floor space at E3 & PAX (Seattle). They shared a booth at PAX East with Capy, which seems to have lower rates since it's new. Seems it could easily get into hundreds of thousands with furnishings / staff / travel / utility expenses, since Double Fine probably had a pretty fancy booth. Realistically, they must have allocated some of the promotion expenses against specific projects they're marketing - whether it was backer dollars or bundle/sale dollars, it must end up in their reckoning of overall project budget.

Here's what Swen Vincke wrote about going to E3:
"It was also actually a relatively cheap way to get in touch with all these journalists. On our PR event, we spent on around a 1000 euros on average per journalist, whereas at E3, the cost per journalist turned out to be around 400 euros. That’s still a lot of money but if you consider that in the past to promote Divinity II, we had costs of +1000 euros/US journalist, with less coverage generated, it’s quite an improvement. I think we could actually reduce that cost even more by increasing our booth size next time.
[...]
So to summarize – yeah, I recommend going to E3. It’s been getting a lot of flak for being uninspiring in the mainstream press, but there’s still a lot of industry concentrated in one spot, and you want to take advantage of that. It’ll take you between 30K & 50K euros or so to do what we’ve done, so you’ll need to sell an extra few thousands of your game to cover that, but given that you reach an audience of millions, that’s not an insane proposition."

Even if Broken Age fails, the influx won't stop if the other projects turn out allright.
The thing to worry about is the time between now, and the release of Broken Age, and the releases of W2/Eternity/Tides, during which every website under the sun will publish a meandering non-opinion on whether or not this will reflect on all KickStarters (which will, in and of itself, have an effect.) And that could be quite the stretch, during which "AA" (or even just "A") games will be the ones getting hurt (I doubt this would effect smaller, "pay my rent for a few months, and for some art"-style funding of experimental (or demographically targetted) games.

That is potentially "like, forever" in internet time, during which those larger projects just don't get funded... and trends pass quickly online. Whether it makes sense, or not, having one of the more visible ones descend into shenanigans is not good for any project of that type.

Nothing new in that video.
First part is just the trailer and the rest about lighting and layers is already known. I think it was in one of the documentary episodes.

The art style needs time to get used to, but overall it looks allright. Fuck the haters. :rpgcodex:

No one is denying that it looks ok, the problem is that this is a fucking adventure game, the graphics are the LEAST important part of it, yet they are all that they keep hyping and showing... and worst, it's all pointless shit like shadows. WHO CARES about fucking shadows on a 2D adventure game?

Yes, I can't get into my head that why are they doing a pisspoor PR. They could show a 2-3 minutes long pure gameplay video, and everyone could be satisfied. They would also calm down the people who are lost their faith in them because of the budget debacle.

Nothing to see here; game looks like garbage. Thanks to Tim Schafer for igniting the kickstarter movement, but this game just does not look at all appealing to me. Well, I didn't pledge toward it, so that's okay to me. :smug:

It's hard to make a good assessment of the graphics, this is a cellphone video taken from a far away screen. But the little that can be glimpsed is not promising at all. Let's hope that there's more footage to be shown, but I kinda agree with the idea that this game is going to be an utter shit.

I happen to think it looks like garbage. I'm not a fan of quirky children's animations, but if that's what floats your boat, then more power to you.

Yeah - sadly, this does look like a children's game. At least the art work. I mean, nice work on the layered graphics engine, but I don't see this appealing to the majority of people who may have pledged to it. Your classic adventure game is between the ages of 25-40. (Average) The character designs are nice for what they are, but I don't think it was what this audience wanted or expected.

Most Lucas Arts games were targeted at kids, but were still plenty enjoyable for adults. Though the art style did have a certain... grittiness to it. Much like Star Wars itself actually.

Wonder if this will end up costing more than Star Citizen.
