castles 1 and 2

Anyone played these old games. How do the hold up?

I was thinking of playing them but sounds like 2 is just an improved version of 1 so maybe I should skip 1.

Any playing advice?

Never played Castles 2 but Castles 1 was great, albeit very limited. You had zero control over your soldiers after placing them. But building the castle itself was fun and the semi-random events that popped up every now and then were atmospheric and often threw spanners in to the works.

Only game that is close enough would be the Stronghold, which is basically Castles with added economical simulation and village building.

I was going to play Castles 1 recently. But it turned out it was real time and years flew by by the minutes...
The games got good reviews at GOG, although I suspect most of the reviews are based on memories of playing them 20 years ago.

They look like simple little games, but it's easy to lose at them. I have the GoG versions and it's definitely still possible to enjoy them

i remember playing them and finding them excellent and easy, but as octavius said it is mostly rosy memories of my youth.

nowadays i suck at them.
