I know the dire news about Dragon Age 2 are a heavy burden for most of you. But don't give up yet. Don't despair. Let "SteveGarbage" of the Greywardens sooth your outrage, for there might still be a spark of hope if we prove ourselves faithful enough. To Us RPG Fans: It'll Be OK.

Whether there is a dialogue wheel or not, whether Hawke speaks or just looks dumbly numb all the time during conversations, whether I’m stuck with a canon male, warrior Hawke or not – if BioWare delivers a compelling tale with characters I fall in love with, the game is a success. If I take something out of the story or if I feel bad about a particular decision I made that had negative consequences result from it, it’s a success. If I feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction mixed with sadness and depression as the final credits roll when I beat it, it’s been a success.

I hope this indepth 3-page analysis of the situation managed to calm your emotions and lift the dark thoughts of sorrow that were clouding your minds. I feel much better now.

I don't understand why gamers feel the obsessive need to defend the companies that make their games. YOU'RE A FUCKING CONSUMER. THE GAME COMPANY CATERS TO YOUR INTERESTS, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!

As long as we can romance Shale, it will be all good.

Oh well, I'll pirate the game. I won't play it, I'll just pirate and seed it with my uber fast connection. That'll show Biowhore.

Agreed wholeheartedly. That's how I approach porn as well: I don't care how ugly the girls are as long the tale of a pizza delivery boy getting lucky is elaborate and compelling enough. :M

Durr. Firms produce goods that satisfy consumer wants or needs. Consumers don't buy shit because a firm has put it on the market; they buy it because it's something they want. In other words, firms respond to consumer demands, and not the other way around. If a company is making a product that isn't what you want, it's not your job to justify their decision making, but apparently that hasn't yet occurred to gamers.

Consumers don't know what they really want.

That's why we have advertising and prisons.

UNLESS that company creates that need to buy their shit, like romances being important for a rpg now. Consumers usually aren't sure about what they want, and will happily buy shit just because it's on the market.

    edit: kinda beaten

Exactly. As consumers, gamers have yet to realize that they don't have to be complete fucking toolbags. Nobody is going to come into your home and force you to buy a copy of Dragon Age 2 if you don't actually like the changes made to the game-play. You don't have to purchase a title if you don't agree with the direction in which it has been taken, and you sure as shit don't need to sit around convincing yourself that you want something that you don't.

A sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that you've got the intestinal fortitude to actually sit through the entire thing mixed with the sadness and depression that accompany the realization that you've just wasted 40+ hours of your life and you won't be getting it back? I'm not sure that I'd describe that as a success.

True. But it's not like game companies are doing us a favor by deigning to make a game for us unwashed masses. We're the ones paying their fucking salary, so it's not like we're obligated to give them a rimjob every time they do something retarded. If anything, it's the other way around.

It is a pleasure to be acquainted with you. You might also be interested to know that the Codex has acquired some fine new Grimoire avatars.

Unfortunately, the "we" and "us" is somewhat irrelevant to the company if these words designate a small minority. Most videogames are like TV series nowadays, and they have similar target groups and follow the same dynamics.

This guy is writing for a Dragon Age/Bioware fansite, so I don't think he represents the gamer side.

Poor, poor naive SMA! Karl Marx long ago described correctly that it's the capitalist enterprise that creates a demand for it's product, whether or not the eventual consumer desired it in the first place.

He represents the fanboy side. Which is pretty much 90% of gamers.

Or maybe we could agree most people are retarded? I mean, that'd be less like a creepy Zionist conspiracy.

While that must be Volly's single most stupid statement of the month, if not the year, as pointed out, firms can very well create a demand.
But the demand for DA2 generally seems to be customization/races > forced protagonist (and at least on the codex real dialogue > retard wheel and money wasted on even more VOs).
So you are absolutely right in criticising that Bio-cocksucker.

But I find the back-pedalling of the greywardens very entertaining. Greywardens.com and Bioware, it's like watching gay-porn with hookers, betrayals and drama without actually having to watch guys sucking each others dick's.

Demands, schmands. Sit and watch as people eventually find out that having a Sword-wielding Shepard is so awesome they realized they don't really miss choosing their race, and that Bio has done it again, etc.

Customers only hold any power if they know what they want, and that happens as often as Volly making a coherent sentence.

We'll see. I don't doubt that the Bio-fans will suck it up anyway, but I'm quite sure we'll see a lingering discontent even outside the codex because of it. Hell, even Volly, the biggest Bio-fan on the codex is all :rage: because he can't play a dwarf.

It's one thing to be a game fanboy, and quite another to be a company fanboy. In the first case you just liked a game very much, in the second you're basically the company's bitch.
