Due to inexperience, my brother and I have greatly underestimated how long it takes to make a game.
The two of us have worked on it for 3 years full-time (2015-2018), putting in 50,000 animation frames & 250,000 lines of code.
But this was simply not enough and we have not even reached the stretch goals yet. We have decided that due to project's [and our] poor reputation it was not a worthwhile investment to continue develop ConEX.
The scope of the game was reduced significantly, and major parts were cut out.
Upon release, the game has reached 97% dislike rating.
3. Can I get a refund?
Yes, you can. But you cannot receive it on your original payment instrument, as they have expired, according to a Kickstarter support specialist.
The only way to obtain a refund is to PM me directly so we can arrange a PayPal money transfer. Many refunds were already sent out this way over the last two years since the game's release.
That was exactly what I thought. Straight up $ is not the only thing that sustains charlatans like these. I'd much rather lose a few bucks on a failed kickstarter than feed a scammer.Honestly isn’t the greater likelihood that after being given people’s email address and PayPal account name, he intends a further fraud? Maybe I’m jaded but this text is almost indistinguishable from a spear phishing scam.

I guess I slightly disagree with this. It's of course utterly pointless to want to recover the $10 from some broke scammers. And seeking revenge over something like this is stupid; a waste of time and emotional energy. This surely falls into the category of vengeance that should be left to the Lord or karma or the inevitability of fraudsters eventually getting caught. So far, agreed. Also, the incident is more than 7 years ago. When kickstarter was new, we were aware that exactly this thing would happen, and of course it happened. So people should finally come to terms with the fucking 10$ they sent to some moron. There is no point to be vengeful because the law sort of forgives a small debt that is long ago. Provided they were broke at some point, after some years there is nothing left to take from them. That's probably also their line of defense, they took their game off Steam and also posted a half assed confession on kickstarter that they were morons. That way they will succesfully play the broke developers. And no one will be able extort a great deal of money from them if the damage is only 10$. It is like a shopkeeper who sold you a rotten chicken sandwich nearly a decade ago.
Feels like less than a year. Jesus christ I amAlso, the incident is more than 7 years ago.
Aren't you a bit theatrialic here? Did something bad happen to you recently or are you reading something emotionally loaded in the negative sense? Or is it the corona self imposed california pseudo jail-time that is nabbing upon you? We are here for you !ut I disagree that the harm they did can be measured in an individual's lost $10 or even the aggregate $60k or whatever it was they stole. They also stole people's hopes and excitement for the game and faith in small developers seeking modest crowdfunding. The enthusiastic generosity of the gaming community, and its instinctive support of the little guy, is a beautiful thing (I don't want to pretend there isn't also a pettiness and vindictiveness in parts of the same community, of course), and scammers like these diminish and, over time, destroy it. It's like (to use an analogy I over-employ) when post-fall Romans would strip marble off monuments to cook into quicklime for making their hovels, or when someone breaks into a home to steal the silverware. It is a massively negative sum transaction.
Makes you honorable in this instance. For a while, I was allocating a percentage of Primordia royalties to backing small projects on Kickstarter (I think I hit 250 projects) and then giving away whatever keys / rewards I got.
Kickstarter is a opportunity for dreams, but there is always the reality with sometimes a rude awakening. I have opted out of KS for the reason of Gatekeeping of Projects and preventing projects made by conservative people (i supported left and right, if the project was interesting) and not because projects failed or changed. Guarantee of success is not guaranteed.I never wanted to do a Kickstarter fundraiser for myself anyway.... I will say that the scams with ConEx and some other games around the same time did turn me off to continuing to back Kickstarter projects.
Ok i agree with you that the behavior towards gamers lacks and i also dislike the things that you have named, but you cannot change whales, frauds and snake oil salesman. Btw. Aren't you a lawyer? To quote Mackie Messer: "What is a bank robbery versus starting a bank?"I probably am being theatrical, but I've increasingly lost patience for people who casually try to destroy the goodwill that exists in the gaming community, whether by treating fans as "whales" to bilked of their money through in-game purchases and crowd-funding tiers, by insulting and demeaning old school grognard types, or by engaging in outright scams. There are plenty of scoundrels in the Codex, of course, but this strikes me as different.
I opt always for anger, because wallowing in unhappiness is not for a man among men. And with anger you can fuel your desire to create and change things, while unhappiness....Like many childhood nerds, I found the gaming community to be a utopian place, for all the shit-talking that may go on in it. Tons of super generous people. Tons of shared affection. That built up a core of goodwill that enabled the industry to grow. I've spent the last few years watching that goodwill being farmed in a way that exhausts the soil, and I see other people salting the soil for no good reason at all. It makes me unhappy. Perhaps present circumstances make me more inclined to wallow in that unhappiness; if so, what better mud pit than the Codex for my wallowing?
