You can't really play games which use a quest compass without said compass, because usually the NPCs in those games don't give you directions or locations to commence your search.

There are games like Dishonored and Deus Ex: Human Revolution where you can turn the markers completely off and be fine. There are others like Witcher 3 and Skyrim where you don't get enough information and still need them, but you can remove them from the HUD and just see them on the map for a more immersive experience.
