This is pissing me off. I recently installed an unofficial Thief Gold mod that fixed this problem (http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733), but now the cutscenes are once again, for some reason, not playing. At least not after the first mission (Lord Baffoon). I'm playing the Steam version on Windows 7 64-bit.

Does anyone know what to do? Thief ain't the same without those cutscenes.

I can't believe I missed a thread right at the top of the page. My apologies. The game is in the following folder: computer/local disk (c: )/programs(x86)/steam/steamapps/common/thief_gold

Well that explains it. From the page you linked to:

-installing the game to a protected folder (windows, program files etc) may result in strange and broken behaviour (vista/win7).

Sometimes they stop playing even when installed in proper directory and everything's updated correctly, but for me PC restart always fixed it.

I had the same problem with Thief 2, and I think this was the fix that worked for me:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2818712&page=2

1) Locate (use "Search") the file named "regsvr32.exe". It is located in the Windows SYSTEM directory (if 9x/ME) or SYSTEM32 (if 2000/XP/7). Copy it to your Thief installation.

2) Create a text document named "RegIndeo.bat" and copy/paste the following text:
regsvr32.exe /s LGVID.AX

3) Save it (The file extension must be .bat)

Simply double-click on the file when your movies don't play.

Note: it is not needed to repeat the operation in all your installed Thief/Gold/II, simply use one of them. The "registration" process will fix the problems in all installed Thief games present.

*In addition, please note: the /s parameter mentioned above suppresses any confirmation or error messages so if you want to make sure it is working do not add the /s*

A third option if the above have failed (Solution 3):

1) Press Start

2) Press Run

3) Type regsvr32 c:\your\path\to\Thief\LGVID.AX where "c:\your\path\to\Thief\" matches your own path.

4) You should get a message box pop up that says dllregisterserver in module c:\your\path\to\Thief\LGVID.AX succeeded.

Although it's supposed to be a "permanent" fix, I think the issue came back once or twice. Wasn't a big deal, though, as you could just run the same command again and the cutscenes would play properly again.

edit: Now that I think of it, I probably didn't even go through that first phase but only ran the "regsvr32 c:\your\path\to\Thief\LGVID.AX" command, and it worked.

Just watch the .avi files straight out of the game directory, they are even chronologically named for your convenience :M

Don't you have to install the codec to run those videos? I remember i had. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack has it.

Think I did something like that back in the day on XP, Alex, but that's not necessary with NewDark which is included in TFix.

install tfix you bum. This game uses a ancient unsupported windows codec from intel. Unsupported everywhere that is, except on ffmpeg, which newdark uses.

if you 'don't wanna' you can 'fix' this issue by running the install of the indeo (or something like that) codec (from the game install disc) everytime you want to play the game.

The statically linked dll linked above is a superior solution to the striked text.

Weird, I don't have any probs with Thief 2 vids which I assume also use some ancient codec and I'm using the disc version installed in program files. Maybe it's from using TafferPatcher, not sure. Only codecs I have installed are x264 and ffdshow tryouts.
