It was a good concept, but not surprised, the project never gained much steam for whatever reason.

Props for trying, and props for coming out and being honest about not finishing it. :salute:

I was expecting this to happen but still sad to see.

May I suggest Scott to give Unity3D a try? It's a great tool and once you start learning the basics, you can start getting results immediately provided you know some basic modelling or can handle the asset pipeline management to make/use placeholders and scripting to actually start making it happen and go get the core game mechanics working in no time.

Also, when Google chose Unity3D out of a gazillion APIs for which to implement built-in support in Chrome and Android, you know there's something to it.

Scott could as well start working on implementing his combat and dialogue mechanics, interface elements and whatnot using Javascript and ramp up the development pipeline once people to do actual assets and main coding could be found.

Well okay. But it didn't seem quite like that based on what he said. Specifically he mentioned not being able to finish it in five years as a deciding factor.
Five years is a long time. How many people would want to be involved with a project for over 5 years?

Those who actually finish their indie games - like Vogel - tend to hire people when they need a team.
Because it's that easy, right?

Btw, Vogel works alone.

Nobody I know. I think that it is possible, if you are really into that game, if you like everything about it, especially the team. And even then, there are periods when you're just sick of it all and need a break.

Wasn't that basically what he said?
Vogel works alone (in the team) and hires external people for art stuff, etc. ?
Of course, if you don't have the money to hire someone... well, your problem ;)

Unless I'm mistaken, only the loading screens and the drawings illustrating skills are done by an external artist.

Sad but it doesn't really surprise me. It always did sound way overambitious.
In what ways? I don't think that Scott's ideas could be described as overambitious. It was a realistic, well defined project. The main features are the Lovecraftian writing and the atmosphere, and I think that Scott really nailed it.

Pretty much all the mechanics and goals described sounded like a gargantuan task for such a small and untried team. Anyway, hope you guys can revive it when/if AoD works out.

So...are you saying that he won't be willing to get back on it even if you guys come on board once AOD is done? Because by then it will definitely end up being more than five years.

He should consider making the game in the Dragon Age toolset if he still has the energy and interest in doing it. He would have all the fundamentals needed and from what i've seen he's decent at making models as well. No money in it of course.

Did they ever even release any screenshots?
They just said they never got past the writing stage.

Just making sure before I posted this.

Protip:

Never get excited about an indie game until you see actual, in-engine gameplay screenshots.

There are unlimited numbers of people out there with great ideas for plots, settings and game mechanics.

There are very few people out there with the technical ability to make games and the inclination and time to do so for free or virtually for free.

Thus, getting excited about a good idea for a game (which is all Cyclopean ever was) is dumb.

Hopefully you guys learned your lesson.

(and no, a little character generator thingy doesn't count)

That's not what I'm saying at all.
