Like so many other promising RPGs originally planned for release this year, the release of Daedalic's Blackguards has been delayed until 2014. GameBanshee has the press release:

Blackguards: Release Date rescheduled

Hamburg, October 16th, 2013 – Blackguards, Daedalic Entertainment's upcoming turn-based RPG has been rescheduled to January 2014. This game is not only new ground for the developer in terms of is grim storytelling; a turn-based RPG also means a whole new genre for adventure-specialist Daedalic to tackle.

'Of course we want to ensure the highest quality, even if we tread on new ground; and most of all, we want the players to enjoy the finished game.', Kai Fiebig says, Senior Producer of Blackguards.

'All the time we've gained now will be used to put as much effort as possible into improving the game. We'll optimize performance, implement new features and also polish the visuals.'

Blackguards will be available January 2014 for PC.

"implement new features"

Multiplayer confirmed.

:troll:

Oh, indeed, a preview mentioning multiplayer, minigames and quest editor. I can't find other articles mentioning multiplayer, but several articles mentioning level/map/quest/someghing editor.

Anyways, I hope Daedalic guys take as much time as they need. :salute:

I wouldn't include this potential-Euro-shovelware among those.

this game looks like an incredibly boring combat sim with little else to offer.

Have you ever played something from Daedalic?
I would put their adventures at the same rating as the Lucas Arts adventures. And I'm not talking about Monkey Island 4.
Those guys know how to tell a story, that's for sure.

So, I expect a good story (and good story telling), and I have high hopes because so far all their games have been very good*. Of course, I may be wrong and they cannot into RPGs. Entirely possible ;)

*With Whispered World being great. I would seriously rate it as the best adventure game, ever. Possibly with MI 1-3, but that's it. At least the German version. Maybe the publisher fucked up the English localization, no idea.

No, but the plot synopsis for this sounded like a bore and they kinda lost me with the rape-wolf at the beginning.

My primary concern is gameplay and this has two things going for it: Europeans and an awful tabletop-derived system.

Europeans
You better like us. :D
We'll be all that will be left of the "old ways" once the US have crumbled (and there's no denying they are on a good way) and the asians have taken their place at the top. ;)

But if you're talking about typical European RPG gameplay, then... I have no idea what's wrong with that. There's the occasionally screwed up game, but that happens everywhere.

Huh? RoA is amongst the best rule systems out there. Extremely detailed, versatile and well-balanced.
Or do you mean the "derived" with awful? If so, where did you get your infos from?
But yeah, still a valid point, ruleset-derivates tend to be rather bad sometimes.

IME Europeans have a cargo cult-like approach when it comes to making RPGs in that they just superficially copy without understanding.

I don't like any P&P systems and I think they're a bad fit for computer role playing games.

Examples?

This isn't a game I've been holding my breath for so I don't care. Character creation will probably be at the depth level of Drakensang or thereabouts and there isn't even a flanking mechanic in the game, which may or may not be indicative of its actual tactical depth.

Man, I played the Whispered World, best part was on that island with the candles, that was truly great, it is a pity that the rest of the game is very boring. The fact that the main character is super annoying doesn't help. Not like Lucas Arts at all, not come even close. The story has a mind fuck ending but what come before is so boring that when I got there I just could say "meh". It isn't a terrible adventure game but the only thing it really have in it's favor is the gorgeous 2d art and some moments in it.

I'd say Whipered World is one of the earlier and worse one from Daedalic.
In fact I like the Dark Eye one best. Cause the lead character is most likable I guess.

I've tried a few of Daedalic's games (Deponia, Chaos on Deponia, The Whispered World, and The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav) after repeatedly seeing them lauded as the best adventure game developer in over a decade, the spiritual successor to the LucasArts adventure team, etc., but so far I haven't been impressed. The only area in which they excel is art design; everything else falls flat for me. In no particular order:

- Their characters are either off-putting (Deponia, The Whispered World) or unmemorable (Chains of Satinav). (Sadwick is an odd case, because I suspect that the English voice actor, though he portrayed the character as he was written, also ended up making him far more intolerable than the text alone would have. The other two are completely unsalvageable, though.)
- Their humor is mediocre at best. Deponia's mostly consists of variations on the same 3-4 jokes being repeated ad infinitum. Satinav barely has any humor to speak of, and the plot is too tedious to make up for it. Oddly enough, I'd say that The Whispered World had the best and most varied humor out of the ones that I've played; it's just that it was overshadowed by Sadwick's constant barrage of sighs.
- They make decent puzzles - easier than I'd prefer and nothing special, but nothing completely out-of-whack with the setting's logic either, and they're better than the interactive movies that some companies try to pass off as adventure games.
- As mentioned, they do make some truly beautiful art, especially the backgrounds in TWW and CoS. I like some of the music - TWW's in particular - as well.

I still have a copy of A New Beginning to try at some point, but given that even Daedalic fans don't seem to think much of it, I don't have high hopes.

Funny, I loved both main characters in TWW and Deponia. Sadwick (TWW) is basically a cynical/sad clown, who doesn't want to be one and Rufus (Deponia) a naive, self-centered, but funny asshole.
With Sadwick, I think it comes down to personal preferences, if you like such characters or not. Also, it very much depends on the localization, as he is really constantly sighing and tends to be whiny. The German one is really good (though even here, reviews main point was if the reviewer liked Sadwick or not).
With Rufus, you have to be at least slightly sadistic to like him.

I guess Daedalic really does not like to present main characters that are as generally likeable as Guybrush. But they are definitely more interesting. The only thing I remember form Guybrush is "Ich bin Guybrush Threepwood, ein mächtiger Pirat!". And I do remember a lot more about the games, just not their protagonist. Guybrush is pretty much an average guy (concerning personality), with all characters surrounding him being more special, making them more interesting in contrast.

I'm pretty sure he meant with examples not primarily studios, but actual in-game examples.
Where was something copied without being understood?

Daedalic is not the best adventure game developer in over a decade, it's Telltale!

Seriously Daedalic is like the only profilic one making 2D AVG games. Besides Wadjet Eyes who is behind the tech tree. And drawing skill.

Genuine question, any of you have been part of the testing group to say the combat sucks ? As for telltale being best adventure game developper ,maybe for sam&max but their last games the walking dead were loaded with QTE . QTE are evil, the herald of decline, i prefer the traditional approach of daedalic .Chain of satinav puzzles werent the best but Memoria was really great with superb artwork and comparable to sierra king quest.

Oh and primordia is better than anything telltale ever released, if there was an award to give , id rather give to those indie guys.

I would say they were comparable in quality until Telltale released the amazing Walking Dead game (which is more of an interactive novel than an adventure game though...)
