I guess you could do it like a mixture of CK2 and HoMM. You have a campaign trail you go along. As you go along random events with C&C happen that give you buffs or debuffs, You fight battles in turn based HoMM style. It could be a fun little time waster.

Nah, there's nothing in tabletop that surpasses the experience of Crusader Kings 2/3 of being a crusader.

Suggestion: call 2 or 3 friends and play CK2/3 multiplayer in the same crusading family. I bet you'll be killing and cuckolding each other before reaching Jerusalem.
