Per this announcement, there will be opportunities to test out Diablo II: Resurrected for those people who have pre-ordered the game. Apparently, the testing will start this weekend and feature three of the player classes from the original version of the game, Amazon, Barbarian, and Sorceress. You'll also be able to experience, at least in part, areas from the first two acts of the original.

An acclaimed phenomenon, Diablo® II enchanted scores of gamers with addictive hack-and-slash gameplay and an immersive world. Now more than 20 years later the timeless classic is resurrected.

Our journey back to this iconic experience is about to begin. We are pleased to announce the Diablo II: Resurrected Single-player Technical Alpha, the first of multiple tests. As diehard fans, we understand that many of you are itching to return to a game so fondly remembered. Still, we are also thrilled to welcome new players to experience this iconic classic, and we look forward to the feedback you all may share. We want to know if we’re upholding the authenticity of design with our new visuals and quality of life changes.

This sounds good to me after the last time they tried to remaster one of their games. At least this way, players can see what they're doing and raise any red flags about it beforehand.

What does "Technical Alpha" mean these days, especially for a remaster? The already have a completed game to work on, how can it be an Alpha (and why on earth would want to test one as a customer)?

I thought they're rebuilding the game from scratch, Demon's Souls style? At least it looks like a new game in a modern engine. Plus there's also a server stress test. Makes sense.

They don't. It is the same engine, that is why existing saves will also work. A community manager said this on reddit:

Yea. Plus if it really is the same engine it's clearly updated and overhauled so much it might as well be a new thing.

It's like saying the engine in your new Ford "is essentially the same engine as in Model T". Technically yes...but really no.

It's a smart way of showing gameplay of the current version, without being dislike bombed at YouTube. Remember how Activion Blizzard removed their own video (because it was receiving too many dislikes) of Diablo Immortal and reuploaded it, in 2018? The fanbase found out, and videos unrelated to Diablo Immortal were "attacked" as well, in response.

And you'd be surprised how many people are willing to test a game in development, without receiving payment. It's a crazy world we live in.

I still remember when I found those artefact gloves that increase mana regen for sorcerer-es, I yelled that loud.
Anyway, playing it now is as returning to a sandbox...
