Jan Jansen alone probably has more rants than Morte.

This can't be accurate
Keep in mind that the more joinable NPCs there are, the more checks there's going to be and it's exponential.

If there's Jaheira and Keldorn, let's say they interject in each other's respective dialogues just once, so that's a total of two references (Jaheira -> Keldorn, Keldorn -> Jaheira).
Now add Imoen, and let them all reference each other. Jaheira -> Keldorn, Jaheira -> Imoen, Keldorn -> Jaheira, Keldorn -> Imoen, Imoen -> Jaheira, Imoen -> Keldorn. Now we're at 6 references.
Add in a 4th guy, now we have 12 references.
BG2 has 17 guys.

Sure, which is why I said BG2 excels at the amount of party banter. So it sounds like those stats you posted are only when party members talk to each other. So they don't include the instances where party members interject during a conversation with an NPC?

All checks, whether for interjection or any other dialogue reason.

Could you please write more about race checks in BG2?
One check ≠ one occurrence of event. In practice, 73 checks in BG2 = 6 factual events where the race is checked.

Belmin Gergas is a codexer human in Athkatla who believes all elves are evil perversions of humanity.

Phrases 1, 2 and 3 check that none of your party members are elves (3 phrases * 6 checks = 18 checks).

If your name is Drizzt and you're an elf, the real Drizzt has something to say about it

You can calm down Yakman if you have 15+ Charisma or you're an elf, because he's an elf too (or you can heal him, or have Keldorn/Aerie/Viconia talk to him, etc... a bunch of solutions)

When you emerge from the Underdark, the elves react to you being an elf, but only in passing. (a dozen checks for elf or not elf)

A duergar in the Copper Coroner talks to you friendlier if you're a dwarf.

Halflings, dwarves and gnomes get a different escort at the Copper Coronet from the tall races. (a bunch of checks here for race and not race)
All halfling and gnome checks happen in this place.

I believe half of those checks are because you are using BG2EE
