DOOM and Quake's mods are what breathe life into these games so many years after their release, even after the dozens of re-releases, people continue to fork these games' original engines to forge some of the most well-made boomer shooters there are.

Build Engine Games

This was the engine that powered Duke Nukem 3D.

Recommended Mods:
Blood by Monolith Productions
Shadow Warrior Classic Redux by Devolver Digital
Ion Fury by Voidpoint
Witchhaven by Capstone Software
The AMC Squad by AMC Squad Developers

DOOM ports that make the game more stable and playable on modern hardware.

(v3.1) Enhanced Vanilla Project (GZDoom)
Legacy of Rust Pack (GZDoom)
Lithium (GZDoom)
Survivalism (DayZ / Rust Inspired) (Zandronum)
Ashes 2063 (GZDoom)

There are no ports to link here, none that I've tried that is.

Arcane Dimensions (You can't talk about Quake mods without mentioning AD)
Dwell
Infernal Stroggos (Quake 4 in Quake 1)
HLQuake

There are more than likely a lot of great mods I either haven't played or forgot to put in this list, but these mods have been a lot of joy even if played at a casual level.
I wanted to mention ZDaemon and Skulltag but they're more multiplayer-focused DOOM ports so there weren't many mods to link (Zandronum is too, which is why there's only one mod I can recollect playing and thus, listing here).
Any mods you guys can recommend or remember playing?

Doom Delta - makes every weapon feel a bit more impactful and diverse and re-adds in Tom Hall's scrapped idea of multiple characters as outlined in the design documents. Adds in a couple of scrapped enemies too.

Doom the Way id Did - map pack that remakes the original game (including E4) and generally substantially improves quality and diversity of levels, especially in E2 and E3.

Dynamic Enemy Reinforcements v3 - adds the teleporting in enemies from Nightmare difficulty to other difficulty settings.

If you're counting whole new games as mods, as you have in the Build section, then obviously Heretic and Hexen.

Hexen is fucking fantastic, It's superior to Heretic in almost every way. The only issue is that the level design can get a bit disorienting and it's easy to get lost (in a bad way) sometimes.

There is Quake Copper (http://lunaran.com/copper/)

Copper is worth it for two fixes alone - enabling shoot-through and reducing voreball turn-rate. The former in particular makes a *huge* positive gameplay difference. Its also pretty light

I played Underdark Overbright on Quake Copper, it's easily on the level of Arcane Dimensions

There was one map in UD (which requires Copper) that literally has blobber-like puzzles in the style of Eye of the Beholder and Legend of Grimrock :incline:

By combining various Doom WADs with mods you can create your own total conversion/new game essentially.
Posted some time ago in another thread, if someone is interested.
I can give a few recommendation of what i enjoyed or found interesting at least:
-Doom 2 Re-Build-T + Nobody told me about ID
-Duality + Extinction Warrior: Typhon
-Pagodia or Scythe + Demonsteele mod
-DBP57 Shatter Realm + Spawn: Path to Damnation + Project Malice enemy mod
-Netronian chaos + Bungle in the Jungle(this WAD actually comes with the mod)
-DBP52 Havoc in creation + Halo: Doom Evolved
-Remain 3 + Project MSX
-DBP12 Into the Storm + Combined Arms(Past Linked) + Malefactors Enemy mod(Revenants Archviles are extra annoying in this mod tho so past the early levels might be better without this mod)
-DBP58 Immortal Warfare + Call of Doom: Black Warfare(recently dev made a new version of the mod called Call of Doom: Tarkov, might be worth trying with this one)
-DBP40 Funnelcake Apparitions + Showtime!!!
-El Viaje de Diciembre + High Noon Drifter
-DBP36 Aquatic Wonder + BYOC mod(Gumboald)
-Waterlabs GZD + Pvt.Stone
-Doom 2 In City Only + Highway Acceleroid Booster
-Lunatic + Combined Arms Gaiden
-Auger Zenith + Psychic mod(didn't actually play it that way but i think this mod would fit perfectly)

There exists a mod called Corruption Cards that is all about mutators.

And in case someone ever gets tired of the vanilla doom gameplay(unthinkable, i know) there is plenty more gamplay mods to try.
Here is nice channel that does showcases.

Not all of them are ridiculously overpowered like Guncaster and some can get pretty creative.

Kabas Is there a mod which has spellcasting from one hand, shooting from another? Like in Clive Barker's Undying (2001). Is it even possible to make? Thanks

Has anyone tried the expansion that comes with Quake Enhanced? I played the first level and it was pretty decent. I wanna know what I'm in for.

Dimension of the Machine is an ok expansion though not really outstanding. I had fun playing it but I can't recall anything memorable.
