Hepler's dwarf design in DAO was fairly good. It was just that DA2's writing was shit (party because they made really stupid decisions, partly because the entire game was a horrible rushjob), but a good part of that negative PR fiasco also came from Bioware's own policy of acting like Bioware can do no wrong and defending each other from criticism. They don't realize that an inability to take in feedback and admit when and where you dropped the ball can encourage negative feedback to explode because you look much more incompetent when you stand next to a burning building and are praising how you are proud of all the work you did and rejecting all criticism than if you were to honestly engage and discuss the subject of where you fucked up. If you look like you have that much difficulty getting a clue, it's only obvious that a lot more people will get annoyed at you and feel the need to hammer you with the message that you're a fuck-up.

A policy of mutually burying heads up asses is always a shit policy. Sure it feels good, but that "I'm fine just the way I am" attitude also causes you to breed in incompetence and can fuck up PR far more than you'd care to admit.

We now live in a time where praising Hepler isn't a hilarious gag, but a rational point about minimally acceptable competence. What a sharp decline

Well, back then no one really took note of the fact that Hepler was the one who designed the dwarves in DAO. And Hepler's suggestion of a story mode (which she got massively shat on for) was pretty much a natural consequence of Bioware reducing combat to extreme filler and trying to sell their RPGs on the story cutscenes. DA2 definitely pushed the envelope in terms of making combat feel like an utterly pointless slog. But the correct solution is to make combat good and meaningful. It isn't to just get rid of combat (but cutting down on trash combat a bit would be advised).

Anyway, that's the consequence when you keep evolving the genre with reductive conveniences to make it easier. At some point the entire presence of combat starts to feel pointless and unnecessary. Convenience really needs to be done in a way that preserves challenge rather than undermining it. Otherwise you end up with shit like DA2 where you have a ton of combat and no good idea why you're doing it.

Our Next Adventure — Dragon Age: Dreadwolf

Our next game now has an official name. We know you’ve anxiously awaited new details, and today we’re excited to reveal the official title of the next adventure across the lands of Thedas—Dragon Age: Dreadwolf™.

Who is the Dread Wolf?
Solas, the Dread Wolf. Some say he might be an ancient elven god, but some say not. Others say a betrayer of his people…or a savior who now seeks to rescue them at the cost of your world. His motives are inscrutable and his methods sometimes questionable, earning him a reputation as something of a trickster deity—a player of dark and dangerous games.

Whether you’re new to Dragon Age™ stories or you’ve experienced them all, using Solas’s namesake no doubt suggests a spectrum of endless possibilities on where things may go. But at the core of this, like every past game, is you. If you’re new to Dragon Age, you have no need to worry about not having met our antagonist just yet. He’ll properly introduce himself when the time is right, but we did hint at his return when we announced #TheDreadWolfRises back in 2018.

More Dragon Age: Dreadwolf later this year
We suspect you have questions and they’ll be answered in time. While the game won’t be releasing this year, we’re growing closer to that next adventure. Rest assured, Solas is placing his pieces on the board as we speak. That’s all we have for now, but we hope knowing the official title has sparked some intrigue, as we’ll be talking more about the game later this year!

What do you think #Dreadwolf could mean?

So they announced this to be a small scale city-fuckery akin to DA2. But main antagonist is a god, who was also a reall annoying companion in the previous game.
Kind of lame.

So not a failed MMO converted to a 14 hour long single player game?
Just when you think you've found rock bottom.

Obligatory - "how many non-binary companions can I smash hips with?"

EA just fucking liquidate this shit show of a company already..

So they couldn't come up with anything better than to revolve it all around a walking shlick material that is Solas. That was largely expected, I guess.

And this announced scale after all these years due to endless re-designes. Simply cringe.

Why are you guys acting like it wasn't inevitable that the next Dragon Age would be about Solas when the epilogue DLC for Inquisition set him up as the antagonist?

That's an utterly terrible font though, looks like a sci-fi game font.

Oh no, another hundred or so pages about how shit this will be, how shit BioWare is (of course it is) and how shit are developers of that game (yes, they are).

And of course it took them 4 fucking years to reveal... a title.

Pathetic.

Let the fun begin, my eyes and fingers are ready.

"Should we make our next game about the mysterious titans, dwarves, hollow earth or.... Continue peddling more elf garbage?"

"Should we pick up from where our cliffhanger left off or just say 'nah forget that, let's do something else entirely' and piss off the core fans who played through that DLC and have been waiting over seven years and counting to see that story come to its conclusion?"

That doesn't come across as set-up for the plot of a new game the way the stinger in Inquisition ("Solas is the Dread Wolf and he killed Flemeth!") and Trespasser ("Solas has revealed himself and his plans to destroy this world to bring all the magic back!") do.
