They gave House Atreides their authentic color (green), but not House Harkonnen (blue red). :?

I guess they're reserving blue for one of the other factions.

Wouldn't count on House Ordos to be included. It's not in the novels, and their iconic green color is 'spent'.

Atreides are supposed to be red. Their family crest is a red hawk. Leto Atreides is known as "the Red Duke". IIRC it should be blood red specifically to symbolize their bravery during the Butlerian Jihad (as opposed to the Harkonnens who were cowardly blue-blooded aristocrats and this distinction is what started their feud). Not sure how much of that was real canon Dune as compared to the non-Frank Herbert stories though.

They wore green uniforms, and their crest had green background, though. Green seems like their dominant color. I guess it'd work both ways. You might be right though, it's been 15+ years since I read the books.

Dune: Spice Wars - More Info On the New Grand Strategy Game Based On Frank Herbert's Famous Universe

The cutthroat competition, politics, and warfare in Frank Herbert's Dune novels are a natural fit for strategy games, and Northgard developers Shiro Games are looking to capitalize on that with their upcoming RTS/4X, Dune: Spice Wars. Releasing into early access next year, Spice Wars will have us using guile, military might, and careful management of resources to control Arrakis as a number of different factions representing the Great Houses and other important groups from the setting.

The action will take place on a circular map representing Arrakis' North pole, and we'll have the option to roll up a randomized version or use an "official" configuration that is very faithful to the description in the books. While the whole planet is, of course, a big desert, the devs have gone out of their way to make sure it doesn't all feel like a big, homogeneous sandbox. They even consulted a geologist to try and come up with enough visually and mechanically distinct types of arid terrain to keep things interesting.

Rocky areas are valuable as they offer some safety from the worms. Deep Deserts are the opposite: acting almost like seas in a Civilization game, simply venturing into them will be suicidally hazardous until you unlock later techs. All military units will be limited by supplies, which can drain very quickly in unforgiving environments. And of course, the worms are an ever-present threat, with all of your units generating vibrations that will attract them. When one shows up, your only option is usually to evacuate the area until it goes away.

Becoming the ruler of Dune can be accomplished in one of three ways: destroying all of your rivals outright, being declared Governor using political maneuvering, or achieving a score-based Hegemony victory, which can vary from faction to faction. The two factions that have been revealed so far are House Atreides and House Harkonnen, and true to their lore, the former has more options for diplomacy and indirect control while the latter is focused on brutal military domination.

House choice isn't the end of the story, either, as you'll also choose a small number of consulars for each new campaign. These sub-leaders are drawn from your faction's cast of characters and can further customize your playstyle. Lady Jessica is an adept politician, for instance, while Duncan Idaho will give benefits to your military.

Spice will of course be the main resource, and the primary way to get money. Its price will fluctuate over time, and you'll always have to decide how much to sell and how much to stockpile to take advantage of this. There won't be a full supply and demand system at launch, so you can't flood the market to suddenly deflate the price or hoard your stock to keep it high, but the developers are interested in looking into that kind of system more after the initial early access release. You'll also always owe a small spice tax to the Emperor, with dire consequences if you don't pay it.

GAMES OF SUCCESSION

The Emperor isn't the only political force in the galaxy, though, and interacting with the Landsraad, a ruling council of powerful houses, will also present its own challenges and opportunities. This is your principal link to the greater game taking place beyond Arrakis, where you can vote on resolutions to help yourself and/or hinder your enemies. If you play your cards right, you can clinch a win by being named Governor of Arrakis. And not all of the maneuvering happens out in the open.

Espionage will also be a major system, though you can choose to specialize in it heavily or barely touch it at all. The ideal Shiro sees for these shadow games is to reward players who can correctly predict what their enemies are going to do. For example, your agents could launch an operation to severely hinder an oncoming enemy army if you know the attack route they plan to follow. You should feel clever for reading the board and letting the enemy play into your hands like a chess master, not merely be rewarded for deploying spies out without a plan.

All the while, we'll run into side stories that can be anything from a one-off involving the recovery of a crashed ornithopter, or a multi-step event wrapped up in political subterfuge. The devs are striving for a balance between the natural storytelling that will arise from the AI Baron Harkonnen you're playing against, well… acting like Baron Harkonnen, and more handcrafted mini-stories like this. They mentioned Stellaris as a point of comparison, though each campaign should take only a few hours to finish as opposed to dozens.

We'll be able to pack our bags and head for Arrakis when Dune: Spice Wars hits early access some time in 2022.

Dune: Spice Wars FAQ
Answering the communities most pressing questions...

047b3d3c647b3148b1f815dc14820d92ab6a860b.png

Greetings all!

It has been just over a month now since we had the pleasure of revealing Dune: Spice Wars to you all! Understandably, given the relative secrecy around the project so far, there has been a plethora of questions, queries, theories and rumours about exactly what can be expected of the game. So we're here today to answer some of the more popular questions we have recieved over the last few months and hopefully put some of your minds at ease.

Read on to find out more...

What is Dune Spice Wars?
Dune Spice Wars is a real time strategy game featuring 4X elements based in Frank Herbert's Dune universe

How much will it cost?
We’ll announce a price point when we’re closer to release and we know how much content we have in the game.

Is it an RTS or a 4X?
It is both. The game is real time, but the pace is slower than in a typical RTS (and you can pause and fast forward). The game also features exploration, territory control, economic growth, combat, politics and spying, features that make it a true 4X game but do not detract from the core RTS experience that players would expect.
Will there be base building in the game?

K8mWGG.gif

You can construct buildings in your base of operation (Arrakeen for the Atreides for exemple). This is shown as structures added to the base itself and it is interface based. You don’t manually place buildings on the ground as the game is at a much larger scale than your typical RTS.

Has any of the game been reused/recycled from Northgard or any of your other titles?
Vikings are well known for their very bad water discipline, so no. All aspects of Dune: Spice Wars have been developed from the ground up specifically for this game.

Which houses will be available to play?

449527a87caa35cdbce532bd2d11c55cdb075ab9.png

We’ve announced House Harkonnen and House Atreides as playable factions. We’re planning to have 2 other factions at launch, followed by a 5th faction during Early Access (and more later!).

Why is the House Atreides green in game when in previous games it was blue?
To stay true to the books. Many things in Dune have been represented differently in shows, movies, comics or games over the years. The Atreides banner and uniforms are described as green and black in the books so that’s what we went for in the game.

Will houses from classic Dune games make their way to the game? (House Ordos...)
House Ordos was first mentioned in the Dune Encyclopedia and then in the video game Dune 2, but never in Frank Herbert’s works. We’re starting with what’s in the books, and we’ll see what would be best beyond that during the Early Access.

What similarities does the game have with your other title, Northgard?

0091cd7472a6d8a70f4dfa2292bc3ce13eb610c3.png

Both games are real time games with a slower pace. Beyond that the games are quite different. Dune Spice Wars is on a much bigger scale, featuring politics, trading, covert operations and a deeper resource management system. Game length is also 2 to 3 times longer than Northgard (although this could still change at this point).

Have you taken any inspiration from previous Dune games for this title?
We’ve played all the Dune video games (Dune and Dune 2 especially) and all board games as well so there will be some influence. That said, Dune Spice Wars is very much its own game with a unique take on the struggle for the control of Arrakis.

Will the game feature procedural map generation?

K8zYZJ.gif

Yes the maps will be procedurally generated, with different options for size, wind strength, sandworm activity and many others. Deep deserts are used as a kind of blocking feature (like seas in other games), at least until you develop technologies to survive longer in the desert, or build a network or airfields. Maps will also feature unique places that readers of the book will recognize.

Why did you choose to release the game in Early Access instead of as a full game further down the line?
We had very good experiences with Early Access on our previous games. We were able to balance things better with player feedback and we changed our release schedule to fit player expectations on several instances. Our goal is to have a very good game on day one, but we still want the opportunity to tweak or change systems and add content depending on what the community feels.

Why did you choose the somewhat cartoonish and bold art style?

Creating a game on a desert planet has quite a few challenges, one of which is making sure what you look at for a few hours is not bland even if it’s just rock and sand. We spent a lot of time working on the environment and even worked with a geologist specialized in deserts to create things that could exist on such a planet. The stylized art direction comes into play by adding things that bring a variety of colors and shapes so that the environment can stay harsh while not getting boring.

Which languages will be supported?

2a3b5c8218dc3428fbcf1e7f25dd04d24926ee01.png

The final list will depend on metrics we’ll get before Early Access so it’s a bit early to say, but we’ll have at the very least English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese and Russian.

Will there be multiplayer?
We will definitely do multiplayer, but that’s obviously a big chunk of development and we prefer to focus on the core gameplay initially. So the short answer is yes, and it will be a major update during the Early Access.

Will there be a campaign?

z6xw68.gif

The campaign will not be present in the initial launch build but like multiplayer, is planned to come to the game at some point during the Early Access period.

Will you have mod support?
There are no firm plans on this front at this time, but should we see enough demand for mod support, we would be more than happy to look into the possibility.

Will there be DLC?

15d79747146aa77830db2bf70733ecb7e2e11e52.png

There are no DLC plans at this time, as we are focused on Early Access and ensuring the core game is enjoyable, feature rich and complete ahead of the full release further down the line. If there is still demand for more content and we can find a good reason for DLC, it may be something we explore, but it's too early to think about anything like that just yet.

What platforms will be supported?
PC initially, we’ll be looking at other platforms during Early Access.

What involvement does Funcom have with the development of the game?

14b8b049d65d5e8186bdd8deb1788e39c7d60e1d.png

Things are simple: Shiro Games is in charge of the whole development process and Funcom takes care of publishing and marketing.

Where will I be able to buy Dune Spice wars?
We’ll have a Steam release in 2022. We’ll also look at other potential distribution platforms in the coming months.

So there you have it! Hopefully this has addressed most of your questions and cleared up any concerns or misconceptions, but if you have anything else you'd like us to touch upon or address, feel free to leave your questions in the comments and we'll do what we can to get you an answer asap!

As usual, thank you all for your support since announcement and taking the time to read this article.

We can't wait to share some more info with you all (which we'll be doing VERY soon), so keep your eyes peeled for news...

I think they are green because the board game.

Me three or four years ago : "There will be a Dune movie in 2021, maybe we should buy the rights, from my preliminary research they are not that expensive, it may be the next cultural phenomenon, or at least something big"
My management : "Dune ? That's for nerds, no one will care. We should focus on proven licenses, like [bunch of proven licenses done to death so they have very little remaining marketing value, which we knew because we already did games with those licenses]"

Me now : "Remember when I told you to buy the Dune license"
"You told us it would be the new Lords of the Rings, and it clearly is not, so we were right"

Poor atreides must use mechanical units but Harkonnen have a better industry, also their infantry have shields and Worms will eat them.

Are they though? I am not sure where "the Red Duke" comes from (it's just mentioned twice, but never explained in the first book), but here are some other sources:

It carried the red Atreides hawk crest above the breast pocket.

The Duke was tall, olive-skinned. His thin face held harsh angles warmed only by deep gray eyes. He wore a black working uniform with red armorial hawk crest at the breast. A silvered shield belt with the patina of much use girded his narrow waist.

She whirled, saw him striding from the arched passage to the dining hall. His black working uniform with red armorial hawk crest at the breast looked dusty and rumpled.

"Pity!" the Sardaukar sneered. He advanced, looked down at Leto. "So that's the great Red Duke."
If I had doubts about what this man is, that would end them, Yueh thought. Only the Emperor calls the Atreides the Red Duke. The Sardaukar reached down, cut the red hawk insignia from Leto's uniform.

He pointed out the window to the Atreides green and black banner hanging limply from a staff at the edge of the landing field. "That honorable banner could come to mean many evil things."

He had seen a warrior religion there, a fire spreading across the universe with the Atreides green and black banner waving at the head of fanatic legions drunk on spice liquor.

But he saw again in his mind's eye the shrine of his father's skull and the violence with the green and black banner waving in its midst.

And again he remembered the vision of fanatic legions following the green and black banner of the Atreides, pillaging and burning across the universe in the name of their prophet Muad'Dib.

Paul, hearing these words, realized that he had plunged once more into the abyss... blind time. There was no past occupying the future in his mind... except... except... he could still sense the green and black Atreides banner waving... somewhere ahead... still see the jihad's bloody swords and fanatic legions.

The thought was both reassuring and frustrating. Somewhere ahead of him on this path, the fanatic hordes cut their gory path across the universe in his name. The green and black Atreides banner would become a symbol of terror. Wild legions would charge into battle screaming their war cry: "Muad'Dib!" It must not be, he thought. I cannot let it happen.

The man carried Paul's banner on its staff -- the green and black banner with a water tube in the staff -- that already was a legend in the land.

Paul saluted his banner, noting how the green and black flag hung limply now that the dawn wind had died.
So... The crest/hawk is red, but the banner is green and black.

The book mentions mostly "Atreides/Harkonnen uniforms", but here is something more specific:

He saw two more 'thopters swooping from high in the west onto an area of sand suddenly devoid of visible Fremen. Only eight splotches of blue--the bodies of the Sardaukar in Harkonnen uniforms--remained at the scene of violence.

A rain of blue uniforms came over the cliff wall in front of him, falling in low-suspensor slowness. In the flashing instant, Hawat had time to see that they were Sardaukar, hard faces set in battle frenzy, that they were unshielded and each carried a knife in one hand, a stunner in the other.

The Emperor stood poised, waiting -- a slim, elegant figure in a gray Sardaukar uniform with silver and gold trim.
Blue uniforms = Harkonnen.
Grey uniforms = Sardaukar.

One thing worth noting: the duke wears "black working uniform" and Paul in the second book ("Messiah") wears "the black uniform coat with its red hawk crest beneath his Fremen robes". So it's a good guess that Atreides' uniforms would be black. Or black and green, if they were to match their banner. The only thing that's red is the hawk.

Introducing: House Harkonnen
Meet the most devious and fearsome members of the Landsraad!

House Harkonnen, hailing from Giedi Prime (a heavily industrialized planet that lives under the iron fist of their cruel Baron) are a house with a reputation for ambition, brutality, and malevolence, so it is no wonder they are one of the most feared great houses in the Imperium.

Well known for their devious and sinister political tactics, and for the historical feud they have maintained with House Atreides for centuries, they are a force to be reckoned with, and feared by their fellow houses, with good reason.

oZXmwN.gif

Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is the leader of House Harkonnen, one of the wealthiest members of the Landsraad and Duke Leto Atreides' most dangerous rival.

An unparalleled conspirator, as ruthless and cruel as he is intelligent and cunning, the Baron is power-hungry and has a knack for manipulating others and exploiting their weaknesses, as well as a propensity for torture and blackmail, making him one of the most dangerous predators on Arrakis (which in itself is quite the feat…).

3d776f0c19a3fcb378de1550d929bc3586027eb4.png

Baron Harkonnen knows how to surround himself with like-minded people, whether he chose them or molded them in his own image. And make no mistake, Harkonnen's advisers are just as vicious and cruel as he is.
  • Glossu Rabban, on the other hand, knows how to break the will of and maintain permanent pressure on the people ruled by the Harkonnens, with the unique aim of maximizing profits.
  • Pieter de Vries, the Baron's powerful Mentat, is the expert in weaving a network of spies and setting up various operations to harm the enemies of the Great House.
  • Feyd-Rautha, the Baron's protégé, is adept at using charm and manipulation to help the Harkonnens crush their opponents politically.
  • And finally, Iakin Nefud, has the role of organizing the main corps of Harkonnen soldiers, using the men as cannon fodder, as consumable resources, but with unparalleled military results.

af6c1ba8e08d6b2592de108daf86c5ed9119d60e.png

GRW2o7.gif

A key strength of the Harkonnens is their formidable force on the battlefield and their lack of hesitation to employ any and all underhanded tactics at their disposal to achieve their goals.

Whether it's shady politics, assassination, or cutting-edge spying, they know how to implement and execute long-term plans to win wars without having to start them.

However, their military forces can not be downplayed, as the indoctrination that their soldiers undergo transform them into veritable mindless and fanatical war machines.

The main mechanic that binds the Harkonnen troops is this principle of expendable and fanatical soldiers, as ready to kill for as they are to die for causes they do not even care to understand.
  • Troopers, armed with razor-sharp blades, are able to enter a berserker rage when injured, ignoring their pain and increasing their strength the closer they are to death.
  • Vanguards
are masters of combat, and excellent assassins, who revel in blood and death, slaying their targets one after another in an unflinching and unfeeling fashion.
  • Gunners, experts in demolition, equipped with experimental explosive weapons manufactured in secret. Their damage is so extensive that their troops are often wounded and killed by their own fire, for the glory of the House.
  • House Guards, ruthless killers, unstoppable war machines who will follow and carry out any orders given to them without hesitation.
  • Stealth Probes, disposable and inexpensive mechanical units, were developed for the sole purpose of espionage and murder from the shadows.
