So we finally have something to go on, starting with official website.
http://www.koeitecmoamerica.com/dw9/?lang=us

New comers like Cheng Pu, a Wu officer who supported the Sun family across 3 generations, and Zhou Cang, a Shu officer known for his fleetness of foot are two of the fascinating new characters.
Experience the Three Kingdoms story woven through a vast roster of characters; included are all 83 officers from the Dynasty Warriors series, with new costumes.

For the first time in the series, the expansive land of China is shown on a single map with the introduction of an open world format for diverse progression through the game. The 'one vs. thousands' exhilarating action of the Warriors series and the beloved characters from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms tale are carried over, but the freedom through an open world stage provides a brand new Warriors experience.

Critical Missions unfold and progress the story of the player character, and are supplemented by numerous missions from various regions such as Regular Missions that affect the Critical Missions and requests from other characters. The situation will be ever changing depending on what missions are selected. In the many battles that occur on the map, players will find a variety of strategies and tactics open to them such as "attacking head on," "launching a surprise attack from an elevated position" or "infiltrating at night", for numerous ways to enjoy the expansive world of the Three Kingdoms.

The map is displayed with beautiful graphics and features many different regions of China such as snow plains, jungles and deserts which reflect the passage of time and changing climate. Key cities and checkpoints, such as Luoyang and Hulao Gate, and landmarks such as the Yellow River and Mt. Song, are replicated, allowing for deeper immersion into the game world.

Will you pursue Lu Bu? :bounce:

Some translated info from elsewhere:

Gameplay Features
◾The reason why the team decides to make DW9 as Open World is they're taking challenges to make new things because as of the last numbered title (DW8), the series is coming to a stale.
◾DW9's Open World system takes some references from Toukiden 2, but it won't be the exact same because the nature of Open World in each games are different.
◾They plan to reproduce the whole lands of China, but with a focus on livable territories, and a further focus on places where major battles took place like Hulao Gate or Zhongyuan (Central Plains, Guandu etc)
◾Time & Weather will be changing in real time. In nighttime and/or rain it will be harder for enemies to notice the player. *NEW*

Open World - Cities
◾There will be over 10 major unique cities along with more generic towns & villages in the world map.
◾The major unique cities such as Luoyang won't be as big as they were actually, but each area will be about 1 kilometer(square?) big so they should still feel large.
◾Player can move into cities in the middle of battles.
◾Player should be also able to do purchases inside cities.

Open World - Transportation

◾The main method for land transportation is by riding a horse, but a Fast Travel feature is also planned to be added.
◾Swimming is confirmed returning from DW6. Player can also cross large rivers like Changjiang and Yellow River, although it may take about 5 minutes by swimming.
◾Boats are also available as a faster transportation method to cross rivers.

Story Progression
◾Story mode is back to character-based (like pre-DW7), but the history progression is basically the same for each character (like pre-DW6).
◾There will be no What-If/Hypothetical branches that alter history here.
◾Story progression is based on eras (Yellow Turban Rebellion, Anti-Dong Zhuo Coalition, and so on).
◾The starting era will depend on the selected character. For example if you choose Wang Yuanji she will start in an era later than what Zhao Yun would start at.
◾Due to the different starting era, switching player character in mid-game is currently unconfirmed because they would have to re-introduce the era again if the new character's starting era is different from the current era.
◾Discussions in the world map will be pertaining to that era. For example if you go to Nanman during Yellow Turban Rebellion era, you will hear Nanman people talking about Zhang Jiao.

Battles & Missions
◾Each era has a main mission that must be cleared to advance the era. (eg. Defeat Zhang Jiao in YTR era to advance to Dong Zhuo era)
◾The main mission starts with having a high difficulty, but it can be lowered by clearing other missions related to the main mission beforehand.
◾Multiple battles may occur at the same time in different places, and the player will have to make a choice on which battle they want to participate in. They are no longer split by stages.
◾Player can capture castles in various ways other than the orthodox-from-castle-gate method. For example they can raid the castle from a higher elevation (eg. mountains), or do a stealth infiltration to hit the main target without getting noticed by other enemies.
◾There are also subquests such as hunting wild animals with archery and battling against foreign tribes (eg. Shanyue) that have unique visuals.

State Combo
◾In the first interview, the team indicated that they are planning to revise the moveset system from what has been commonly known as Square for normal attacks and Triangle for charge attacks.
◾State Combo is the new moveset system that will change moves depending on the surrounding enemy situations.
◾State Combo is comprised of the following 3 attacks:
-Trigger attack: Begins the combo
-Flow attack: Combo that changes based on enemy situations
-Finish attack: Powerful attack that ends the combo
◾An example of how State Combo works is that when enemies are mid-air then the player character will jump towards them.

Interactive Action
◾Actions will change depending on the surrounding terrains and objects.
◾For example, player will be able to use field objects to attack, such as catapults.
◾Player can also use a grapple hook to climb castle walls and high mountains.
◾Player can utilize oil cans in field to cause fires.

Other Action Revisions & Additions

◾The team has indicated that they want to keep some other systems like Musou attack to retain the exhilarating feel of one-vs-thousand
(Note: In DW8, all characters have 1st Musou, 2nd Musou, Aerial Musou and Awakening Musou)
◾Archery FPS mode from DW5 & before is returning & usable for all characters. It also lets the player to snipe enemies from afar.

Miscellaneous
◾On 31 March 2017, Producer Suzuki held a poll on Twitter asking if the fans prefer Liu Bei with mustache or not. The poll ended with the mustache winning 67% of the votes.
◾Producer Suzuki also said to use the poll comments as reference, in which many are suggesting both versions of Liu Bei (young without mustache & older with mustache) to appear in DW9, just like in SW: Spirit of Sanada.
◾Character models are being reworked from scratch to fit PS4-grade graphics.
◾Characters' new costumes in DW9 will have a tendency of getting less flashier and more geared towards realistic based on the costumes in Three Kingdoms era.

That's a nice 3rd century hut in that fourth screenshot.

A lot of the features talked about seem like they've been influenced by MGSV, which I think is a nice thing.

Considering they can't make interesting linear maps,i don't see how making it open world is going to be a good idea.

"I...I..it's...Lu Bu!"

"A dike? OH NO!"

Dynasty Warriors 3 definitely needs a remake before this shit comes out. Hard was actually hard. Archers did like 40% of your life. Vorpal / Instant Death was beyond OP. Fulfilling conditions for ultimate weapons was actually a challenge. Those were the days.

DW 3 Hu Lao Gate zerg rush south to rescue Yuan Shu by dueling Lu Bu and his retinue. The only time a DW game was challenging.

I definitely liked the feeling of beelining for the enemy commander and basically speedrunning a battle that way back in the day. I think the answer here is to make that still an option, but make it difficult enough that doing all the side missions in the battle doesn't feel like a total waste of time. Would also be nice if I couldn't just grab an attack buff and then massacre absolutely any commanders or generals I found. Running around at red health for infinite musou attacks is stupid too.

I feel like the original series is so stagnant at this point it's got nothing going for it. DQ Heroes had characters that actually had their own playstyles and the monsters could do cool things like heal, explode, silence you, etc. that made them a lot more interesting. I played through the whole game and even spent some time trying to fight some of the postgame battles (which are fucking insane) before putting it down.

Nice to see the open world elements being used in a interesting way and the ai being a actual threat again.

Something about the open world elements shown made me think of Bladestorm. Not a bad thing actually.

But I am not too fond of them bringing the bow back, those always felt far far too clunky for a Warriors game back when they still had them in the games.

As a fan of the series, this looks like shit.

Combat animations and weapon feel is nonexistent. They need to improve this and after god knows how much games it just reeks of laziness.

I mean if you compare ps2 era to this all you get are better graphics and more enemies on screen, everything else is the same.

The ai is blind as a bat, five feet from you and still doesn't react. And no higher difficulties only increase damage, not aggressiveness.

The animations look terrible as well, which i have no idea why even go open world when you can't handle animations.(the ladder climb is too long and too robotic)

Omegaforce needs to stop fixing stuff that isn't broken(combat system, linearity, rpg systems) and start fixing core issues that were left from the ps2 era(ai,animations, map system, weapon feel, etc)

And for added bonus they are removing co op from their recent games including this one, good job.

It explicitly states in the video title that it's a WIP build.

Massacre will happen in February 13: http://www.koeitecmoamerica.com/news/77253/Launch-Date-For-DYNASTY-WARRIORS-9-REVEALED!/

We eased fans’ anticipation today by announcing that our upcoming open-world epic, DYNASTY WARRIORS 9, will be released across the western regions on February 13, 2018, for the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, and Windows PC via Steam®. DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 will venture into new territory as the classic, time-tested “one versus thousands” action, iconic to the Warriors series, is expanded to its first truly open world installment.

We have put together an exciting bundle of bonus content for gamers opting to pick up the physical or standard digital version. Comprised of seven costumes for fan-favorite characters, the bundle includes an imposing Beijing opera-style costume for Zhao Yun and six costumes inspired by traditional Chinese undergarment styles – one each for Guan Yinping, Diaochan, Sun Shangxiang, Lu Lingqi, Wang Yi, and Wang Yuanji.

I LOVE these games, have been playing since DW3, but the more I look, the worse DW9 seems to be. Making it open-world sounds cool, but from what has been show all that happened is that we lost carefully crafted battles and events in favour of A LOT of down time walking across the map or hunting small enemy forces - over and over again.

I hope I'm wrong, but I much prefer the direction Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada and Sengoku Basara 3 & 4 are heading...

So it seems they are revamping the combo system and thanks to that there will be clones everywhere like dw7-6.
There seems to be only about 15 movesets for about 90 characters.
