A guy has been fumbling towards making a Jagged Alliance-type game for about 10 years, putting together various prototypes, scrapping them and starting again in between other projects. Last year he got serious and has been working on the "for real" version, under the dubious project title End State. JA and X-Com are his major gameplay inspirations, and counterterrorist type games like Rainbow 6 and Counter-Strike are cited as thematic inspirations.

Looks like the systems will be deep and complex, with action points, interrupts, robust stealth ... well, here are the bullet points from the Greenlight page:
  • Turn-based tactical combat, with action points and interruptions.
  • Interactive levels with different types of cover, peeking around corners, climbing through windows, destuctable walls and objects and more.
  • Stealth options with advanced visibility and hearing systems.
  • Range of modern weapons from pistols to sniper rifles with varying accuracy, reaction, damage, penetration and more.
  • Varying mission types capture intel, eliminate high-value targets, rescue hostages and more.
  • Strategic layer where you manage your operatives, skills, equipment, leads and missions.
The official website is here. The game went on Steam Greenlight a couple days ago.

Yeah it looks a cut above what we're getting nowadays.
I wanna some more gameplay in a larger area and their geoscape before I collapse in ecstasy.
Hey, and the creator has mentioned level editing before looking into modding support.

Quoting Bear's Pit:
Finally some good news to bring you guys!

Yesterday we've been contacted by a long-time Bear's Pit follower, Henry Vuontisjärvi, who is going public with a very interesting new project. A counter-terrorism themed game inspired by Jagged Alliance, XCOM and also tactical shooters like the original Rainbow Six and the SWAT-series. The game is on Steam Greenlight now and these guys seem to have the heart in the right place when it comes to to what we love in a TBS. Their game is called "End State" and promises to feature:

- Turn-based tactical combat, with action points and interruptions.
- Interactive levels with different types of cover, peeking around corners, climbing through windows, destuctable walls and objects and more.
- Stealth options with advanced visibility and hearing systems.
- Range of modern weapons from pistols to sniper rifles with varying accuracy, reaction, damage, penetration and more.
- Varying mission types capture intel, eliminate high-value targets, rescue hostages and more.
- Strategic layer where you manage your operatives, skills, equipment, leads and missions.

Here is the Greenlight campaign, drop them a vote:

If you wish to read more about Henry and his dream to make a JA2 inspired game, here's the story on their website:
http://www.endstategame.com/

I know everyone atm is kinda bummed out due to JA:F failure, but looks like at least we might get a decent turn-based tactical squad game based on Unity, even though it's not called Jagged anything.

Actually seems interesting. And pretty. I dig.

So, unity again. Modding will probably be problematic.
Still, it pushes all the right buttons. If the maps aren't pitifully small, weapon mods and modding is in (if they can be arsed to write custom tools), I think I'll start fapping cautiously.

There's another thread for this game? I actually searched before I started this one :obviously:

Anyways, yes, I agree with spectre. I'm on the verge of saying :incline: but I'm holding myself

Looks really promising. I wish they did a semi-open world a'la JA2 and not just a series of maps. This may however be asking too much of a guy who according to his bio has thus far worked on mobile games.

What's up with the view switching from overhead to a "cinematic angle" on firing a shot? That shit's terrible.

Update from the steam page. It's looking better and better. The dev seems to know what he's doing systems-wise. Sadly there probably won't be gun p0rnz to match JA2 1.13. Not just because the dev team is small but also because of the setting: not a rag-tag group of mercenaries who might have to use a wide array of weaponry, even antiquated ones, but a specialised anti-terrorist unit.
So this is the start of a development log, where I will be writing the most recent news of End State and also more in-depth articles about the game mechanics. In this first post we will be reviewing some of the movement and positioning features currently in the game.

Standing & running
This is the default movement mode. No special penalties or advantages.

Low walls and obstacles
Characters are able to jump over low walls, fences and windows. These obstacles will slow down your movement for the duration of the jump, during which you may be vulnerable to enemy fire.

Low cover and crouch movement
Low cover is marked by the “half shield”-icon and is a type of cover that you may shoot over. These are the best firing positions in terms of safety and stability. You will be mostly covered from the front, but may be flanked from the sides. Low cover can also provide a stabile platform for the weapon and therefore increase accuracy.

Moving while crouching does cost more AP and it is slower, but you will also be harder to spot, make less movement noise and also be protected from enemy fire by any low covers around you.

Strafing
Strafing allows you to designate the looking direction while moving, which is important tactical decision when clearing spaces where enemies might be in hiding. If an enemy has reserved actions points (AP) and you move to their line of sight, it will trigger and “opportunity fire” for the enemy. In this situation you will also receive an opportunity to react if you are looking at the enemies direction. You may also fire while moving, which makes you harder to hit but also decreases your own accuracy.

Full cover & Peeking
Full cover blocks the line of sight in one direction completely and is marked by the “full shield”-icon. However, if the view to that direction is not blocked from the adjacent tiles, you may use this position to peek.

Peeking allows you to see around corners without risking to be seen and even allows you step out, fire at an enemy and step back in the cover. However, firing from peeking position will expose you for the duration and the enemies may fire back at you. You will also be considered moving and therefore be harder to hit and gain penalty to your own accuracy.

Thanks for reading! Please post any comments or questions below!

The peek move was not there in JA2. At last a dev who tries to enhance and not strictly dumb down.
EDIT: the cover system is also an improvement. The bullets are ray traced and collide properly with the object providing cover, with possible penetration depending on the parameters of the gun/ammo.

This game looks like a mix between Frozen Synapse and JA, can't wait to try it

Looks pretty good but alas, it's hard to be a hopeful ja fan these days.
My only gripe is that getting shot and wounded doesn't seem to do a lot. Or perhaps it is on their todo list?
