Fallout 1's and 2'd character creation screen is the best.

Out of all rpgs, it's pretty clear and functional, everything is explained. All other games with character creation should look up to Fallout.

Fixed your img tag.
Not the best OP but it'll have to do.

What I really like about it is that it's actually the character sheet. The same you use to check your limb damage, spend leveling points, etc.
Did the "Print" button actually print the sheet? IIRC it just exported a txt file or something..?

I don't know if it's the best, but Fallout certainly had a great character screen. Almost all the information you need to know is there. The only complaint I have with it after years of playing both games is that you have to go into your inventory to check weapon damage and DR/DT, which can be problematic in combat because opening your inventory costs 4AP.

One of the great things about Fallout's character screen is that it oozes flavor. Everything from the descriptions to the SPECIAL rolling numbers just oozes the 50's scifi charm that Fallout used for inspiration. Great stuff.

Actually, I would say the green fonts are more reminiscent of green monochrome monitors from the 1980's than anything 50's.

But just think of how much more immersive it can be, where each screen only displays 1 piece of information and it can take 30s to find what you are looking for:

... Fuck modern gaming

50s influence was best visible in the intro, imho.
The actual game had just a few assets, like cars and some robot-enemies, that reminded of the 50s, iirc.

Most of the actual game reminded me more of 70s and 80s post-apoc flics like Mad Max.

And they managed to cram everything in a single screen. Most games will prompt you through a wizard going in a step-by-step manner which is kind of annoying.

Anything that presents abstract information in clear and dense form, without interspersing it with bullshit is good in my book.

Character stats are abstract information even if they are given non-abstract meaning in game - they should be displayed with max clarity.

If everything about the character stats can possibly fit on a single screen, that's a pretty meh RPG.
Not with today's super high resolutions. But back in the DOS era? Yeah, that's about right.

I thought this game has a pretty quick, functional, and easy to use character creation, which is still very comprehensive.

My only issue, aside from what Xor said about weapon/armor values, is that the description for outdoorsman is vague and doesn't tell you it's only useful for speeding up your map travel speed and increasing your chances of avoiding random encounters. And apparently a lot of people tagged energy weapons and got upset when they turned out to be endgame weapons, so the description should probably emphasize their rarity.

C&C, bitch :rpgcodex:

It's a freaking wasteland, obviously you won't find energy weapons easily.

The flamer is a big gun, not an energy weapon.

Half the fun of Fallout was discovering which build was effective and what skills could be used where.
