So I just got this email from Photobucket:

"Some features on your account have been disabled."

uh-oh

WE NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN USING PHOTOBUCKET FOR 3RD PARTY HOSTING*

TO RESTORE YOUR 3RD PARTY HOSTED IMAGES, PLEASE UPGRADE TO A PLUS 500 PLAN.

*What is 3rd Party Hosting?
Photobucket defines 3rd party hosting as the action of embedding an image or photo onto another website. For example, using the <img> tag to embed or display a JPEG image from your Photobucket account on another website such as a forum, Etsy, eBay auction listings, a blog, etc. is definitively 3rd party hosting.

Why Photobucket?
Photobucket continues to have the distinct pleasure of hosting 15 billion photos from 100 million unique users since inception 14 years ago.

The subscriptions we offer are price competitive & we offer unlimited 3rd party hosting, no matter how popular your image is on your forum, blog or online store.

Additionally, we offer our users the opportunity to promote their business or products with the rest of the Photobucket community.

What a sad bunch of stupid fucks.

This means just about all my (and I assume not just mine) old LPs have been effectively nuked, except for Afterfall: Inanity, which was uploaded to imgur, and the current Lionheart one, which I put on Cubeupload (I was close to putting that one on Photobucket as well, so I guess I dodged a bullet right there), because instead of normal images you'll see some gay ass "Please upgrade now, goy :^)" message. And I can't be bothered at all to reupload these LPs anywhere else.

Thanks, Photobucket, from the bottom of my heart. It's astounding how much shit you've become over the last years, and I can't wait for you to finally land on the garbage heap of the internet.

:shredder: My condolences. I've kinda foreseen this happening and have started a Patreon to keep my dropbox account running.

You want to please the masses, you must make the masses pay for it.

I wonder how they expect not to go out of business real soon after just going ahead and disabling all embedding.

Seriously, what the fuck are they even thinking?

Well, it's a long time coming since dropbox too announce they do not want this sort of thing for 'free accounts' months ago.
'Go out of business' is an interesting way to see it. In their opinion the only people they're screwing with are the free-loaders.

True but as long as there is competition offering better terms they will loose patrons; people are not (that stupid) to pay for something they can have for free in other place or at-least much cheaper; you can always go e-begging route and setup patreon account Comrade Roxorovitch; but to be honest your LP-s are not so great to pay for them... unlike those Comrade Cassidy and RK47 Chan did. Commissar Advice: stick to writing reviews.

Exactly. Isn't "3rd party hosting" the very fucking idea of uploading pictures? Now all my articles and updates are fucked up.

Edit: They want 40 bucks a month for the privilege of posting your pictures on the internet? Jesus fucking Christ. I wonder which corporate genius came up with this idea.

Photobucket has been going down the shitter for years, I'm surprised they didn't pull this off sooner. I guess I should log in one last time to see if there's anything worth saving in there before they finally shrivel up and die.

Noo!! All of my LP images are gone, like tears in the rain. :decline:

At least they could have given a warning or something, assholes.

I know, right.

They used to have pretty harsh monthly bandwidth limits that made running popular LPs a bitch, I don't get why they don't just make those even more strict (to discourage LPs but make embedding single images still valid) instead of going 100% full retard and more or less killing the purpose of their entire service.

Even asking people to pay a few bucks a month for extra bandwidth is more sensible than asking anyone who wants to post pictures to pay 40 bucks a month regardless of the bandwidth.

This is why you use Imgur. None of my inane bullshit has gotten taken down because of me being cheap (though $40 is indeed insane).

Hey, wow, just looked at my playthroughs and they've all gone belly-up.

I guess every image I have on-line anywhere is now nuked.

What cunts.

They could have at least done a "all images uploaded from [this date] will be effected" to at least preserve historical data.

And, yeah, what's wrong with a $5 a year charge? 100 million users? is $500m not enough? Instead they want a few thousand people paying $40 a month? Even if they got 50,000 people doing that then that's only $24m a year. However, I can't imagine anyone paying them $40 a month. Maybe some kind of business user? But they'd look for better options, surely?

Really bizzare. I wonder how long it'll be before they have to either retract this or go the way of internet memory.

Lol wtf. I haven't used my photo bucket account in like 10 years, but this is fucking ridiculous.

With Google Photos and Imgur why would anyone even use this garbage anymore?

They want you to browse the album and see the ads. :M

The freeloaders are important too, for publicity. If the majority of the users leave Photobucket, they will migrate to other hosting services, and future paying users will follow.

Photobucket has had crazy harsh bandwidth restrictions for as long as I remember, using it for sharing things with anyone other than a few friends is playing with fire. :M
