Funcom, publisher of The Secret World and Age of Conan, among other games, is under investigation by Norway's economic crime unit.
The Norwegian National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime announced that it has charged Funcom with "suspicion of infringement" of Norway's Securities Trading Act. According to reports out of Norway, the charges were serious enough for the crime unit to raid Funcom's offices and temporarily delist the company from the Oslo Stock Exchange.
Specifically, the crime unit is looking at the "financial information given to the market regarding The Secret World from August 2011 until the launch of the game in July 2012 and the two months following the launch."
Funcom is "fully cooperating" with investigators, but this is more seriously bad news for an organization that has been struggling for the past year and a half.
After The Secret World launched to dismal sales in 2012, Funcom laid off employees across its global offices. A second round of layoffs occurred in January 2013, with Funcom releasing a full half of its staff and restructuring its business.
At the moment, it remains unclear what this investigation could mean for Funcom's future and the future of its games.
