When you play the game so much, you develop a good liking for some of these characters, when you get to that part it's just quite the fucked up scene.

Yeah well, if you start taking this shit seriously (this scene looks pretty serious), it breaks down a bit. Rance isn't meant to be a serious character, but the game has a lot of writing, and it somtimes tries to create drama, which makes things weird and awkward. Are we meant to believe that Rance has some kind of kindness buried way beneath all the self-interested sex drive? Or is it his sex drives that motivates him to be kind at times? Is that the same thing?

Well, not going to try to be pseudo-philosophical about this, but this shit is queer. I mean, weird. Why would they bother with the drama if it was just a ridiculous H game? The H scenes are even used to add effect to the story, which is kind of neat actually. But yeah, how are we supposed to feel when it's Rance who does horrible acts of rape? I guess he doesn't do it on children? Huh. Notice how every little potentially-kind act of Rance is noted? At some point the rape-demon thing gets a bit tiring and you'd actually want to see something else in him, which makes an interesting contrast. I guess this is just like being an emotionally dependent and naive woman that gets beaten down by her husband but keeps hoping he'll get better or something. Good times

There's a way to avoid seeing her getting raped but that only leads to her death, as you find her mutilated corpse. I guess it's there to really cement the reputation of the Demon Army as true bastards, though it doesn't stop there. Luckily this is the only time that involves children.

Serious_Business, pretty good analysis. It IS curious how the game swings between outrageously over-the-top parody and deathly serious, almost grimdark stuff.

There is - two ways, in fact. Though on the other hand there's also a route that requires you NOT to save her, so...

EDIT: And this scene, while disturbing, is still not the only contender for the title of "the worst thing in Sengoku Rance". I mean, it's pretty bad, but there's still some competition, especially since one of those things I'm thinking of isn't exactly forced, but rather happens because of some completely non mandatory actions of the player (and perhaps a bit of fuckuppery on his part). But anyway, lets not get ahead of the LP.

The scene above was the one big WTF, what they were ever thinking, WTF am I playing moment. At this point I was seriously considering quitting - how tasteless that was I don't even. I thought: It would be fine if they left the scene without CG, but fucking no, they just had to cater for pedophiles.

When the first surge of outrage subsided, there came a moment of reflection. Actually Sengoku Rance is the first game ever that made me feel so much appalled at a story event, and perhaps also the first to use the theme of child abuse to stress the nefariousness of the antagonist, and succeed in doing so. The way it suddenly changed it the tone from lighearted-corny to serious-grimdark was nothing short of masterful - and indeed somewhat reminiscent of Berserk. This is something you won't ever find I Biowhore and Bli$$ard narratives and solely for that reason I can appreciate the use of the device in this context.

However, I still feel that the CG was unnecessary - the way WhiskeyWolf presented that scene would do the trick just fine (ok, the impact would be clearly lesser, but... the hell - that stuff, used so abruptly, on a mind not exposed to the glory of the hivemind the Codex - could inflict serious trauma).

Well, basically you make it so that the temple event doesn't ever happen. The first way is to save Soun before you break the fifth gourd - a series of events related to that will reveal that Nobunaga's a demon before he has a chance to get restored. Then the Tenshi sect can seal him before he has a chance to get her kidnapped.

The other way is to go on a picnic with Kenshin, also before you break the fifth gourd. Rance gets lost and then he and Kenshin accidentally kick off the race for the title of the emperor of JAPAN. Xavier wants a piece of that action, so he leaves Oda on his own accord before waiting for Rance to complete his gourd collection. Once again, no temple event, no kidnapping, no rape.

Obviously, both of of those lead to completely different routes for the story.
